maternal...paternal...instinct?

Twins.

They were having twins.

Heren couldn’t seem to get his head around it. He shook from tip to tail, trying his hardest to clear his head to better focus on the idea, but he just couldn’t do it. No matter what, his mind just buzzed at the idea, and just couldn’t seem to focus. Twins. Two babies. Two! And they were going to be his and Adrian’s. And somehow, that concept didn’t seem at all odd to Heren. Technology was more impressive than he could ever have thought possible before he met Adrian. Heren would never have imagined he could be having children with another man, but that was easy compared to the concept of children. More than one. At the same time.

“Twins!”

He grinned in spite of himself, laughing aloud and shaking his head as he said the word. He couldn’t believe it. It wasn’t that it was too good to be true…it was brilliant and true at the same time. Twins. His and Adrian’s! He couldn’t get enough of the words. Which…in hindsight…might be a bit odd, considering Heren’s resistance to the idea only a few months previous. But things changed, he supposed. And they changed for the better. Beyond anything Heren could have dreamed of.

“I’m having twins,” he said, grinning and shaking his head and going back to work on the sink. Adrian really had no concept of how to clean up after himself, and while the dishes got done, the sink tended to acquire a somewhat suspect residue after a few days. Heren shook his head and wondered how Adrian could ever have gotten along without him. Barely, he supposed. At least he was learning, if slowly. He did the dishes and helped clean more frequently. Finishing his attack on the stained porcelain, Heren rinsed the sponge thoroughly and set it aside. At least the rest of the kitchen was clean. He had gotten Adrian to do the counters the day before.

Yes, he was learning, but he’d likely need to pick up the pace of that learning for the twins. Twins! Heren grinned again and shook his head, flicking his tail and looking speculatively at the refrigerator. Adrian had requested he stop cooking vegetarian, if “For gods’ sake, cook something with meat in it!” could be considered a request, and Heren was still a bit concerned about the protein he had gotten his hands on. He would have preferred something he had seen killed, but that was just…out of the question. But in spite of his own doubts, he was certain they wouldn’t die from it. They just might not like it.

Maybe they could move someplace closer to a better market. He hoped so.

“Twins,” he added to himself, then grinned and shook his head. Eventually the novelty would wear off. Just not yet.

the nesting dilemma

Adrian was not sure why Heren left him alone with the cabbages. Ace Sinclaire was not good with vegetables. And no, the redhead did not care that Ace couldn’t help Zachriel pick out new winter clothes. It gave his mate and his son no right to leave him here ALONE with the cabbages. It had already been TWO WHOLE HOURS. Ace was fairly certain the cabbages were going to flop over and wilt at any given moment. He seemed to have that kind of effect on produce.

The note Heren left did say to give the plants a spritz of water every few hours, though. Ace sighed and stood, padding into the kitchen to sniff out the spray bottle Herensuge designated ‘the twins’ bottle’. Ace suspected this was some weird nesting thing mothers did when they were pregnant. Or the equivalent, as the case may be, for his male mate was clearly not carrying any children. The dragon was, however, becoming increasingly clean (and getting after Ace’s bad habits with that much more vigor), and he also seemed to be in an incredibly perky mood. Not that Ace minded, that much. It was definitely the nesting instinct, though. Ace had witnessed it once before (pre-Zach, as it were) and there was no denying the similarities.

The redhead found the bottle on the counter and returned to the cabbages sitting in the window. ‘For plenty of sunlight,’ Heren had advised. Ace hadn’t the heart to tell him the sun rarely shone through the clouds and the smog. But as long as the twins weren’t dying, or wilting, he wasn’t too concerned.

Spritz spritz. “For Ixidor.” Spritz sprtiz. “For Gaizka.”

Since Herensuge abandoned him with the little veggies, Ace took the liberty of naming them. He had chosen two male names (both from Heren’s culture, nonetheless) under the assumption the twins would be boys. Of course, he had no proof, none at all, but both of Ace’s other children were male so it was only logical for the redhead to assume he’d sire another pair of boys. (And quite frankly, a daughter would blow Adrian’s mind. There would be many a-late night call to his Yuki.)

Returning the bottle to its home, Ace wandered back into the communal room and flopped onto the couch, staring at the pair of cabbages blankly. How was he supposed to kill another two hours? Was spritzing them all he had to do? The redhead groaned and flopped over, staring at the pillow before deciding maybe the cabbages would like pillows under their pots.

Perhaps Herensuge was not the only one inflicted with the nesting instinct.

the difficulties of relocation and grease fires

Heren is preoccupied with the foreign business of buying a new house, and all Ace wants is another, slightly bigger apartment...and possibly a fire extinguisher. It seems that no matter how hard Heren tries, he just can't seem to get it through Ace's head that high heats and flammable substances just don't mix. Hopefully Zachriel will still get lunch in the midst of all the chaos.
