HEY YO!
I'm ChocoHearts, but most people just call me "Choco". Most people that want to LIVE, in any case... ninja Ahem. I'm the New Guy, but you'll soon all bow down to me. Oh yes you will. Fufufufufuu....
eek No Idea what I'm talking about. *shrugs* oh well. Nice to, like, meet you people and stuff.
Star Ocean 3? FF-style RPG, right? (As opposed to a Morrowind-style RPG, that is.) Never played it. biggrin

SO3? Nothing LIKE FF games. Star Ocean series, especially 3, will blow away any other RPG Battle Systems ever. o_o ... IMO.
Fully action, you move your characters, attacks with the buttons, ( Which means, no selecting commands from a menu. ), and many other systems that makes this game much great. Not to meantion more variety as compared to Kingdom Hearts, which that game sorta gets boring after you beat it. Star Ocean on the other hand, it's hard for that game to get boring, and not only that, but has a good replay value as well. In other words, Star Ocean will last significantly much more longer than Kingdom Hearts will, even if they are both action-RPG.
o_o .. Just had to say that, since it's like.. my top favorite RPG. You can also check out my almost 70 page long SO3 thread in the Videogames Discussions Forum.

I was making the distinction, basically, between a Role-Playing Game, where your character (and, usually, the storyline) evolves based on your actions; and a party-based RPG that is much more linear.
Like, in Morrowind, there are TONS AND TONS of different things you can do in the game. You want your character to be a mage, fine. You want her to be a thief, she can be. But in FF7 (I'm just using what I have experience with for examples) Cloud is ALWAYS the same character. So are Aeris, Tifa, Barret, everyone - they may have different abilities and weapons depending on your actions, but Cloud is still Cloud after you beat Sephy.
I'm not bashing, I'm just trying to make myself understood. o.o'

I've heard similar rants here and there in the Videogames Discussions Forum, since I am a Video Game Paladin. o_o
Except I'd have to say that Morrowind and the likes are more of a free-form RPG, and.. RPGs like Final Fantasy, Dragon Warriors, Star Ocean, etc.. You're like.. playing a role as the main character of the game. Of course, that's not very free as Morrowind and all, but if you're still playing a role as someone, wouldn't it still be considered a Role Playing Game? If not then.. what else can it be called? o.o;

I guess I got mixed up with the other rant thing, with people saying Final Fantasy and stuff like that aren't RPGs because you're not given the choice to choose.. like.. things that would tamper with the story. Like kill the main character/or their friends.. permanently.. etc.
And.. Not all would be considered RPG. o.o Most would though. Just that some racing, most puzzle, and... some other things I missed won't have too much of a story even.

I'm partial to Tales of Symphonia. Sounds kinda like your Star Ocean, but when you beat it you can use your spare grade(stuff earned through battle) to get stuff like 2x exp, more earned grade, transfer money, transfer a lot a stuff, and some other things. I kinda forgot some of the stuff on there but you get the idea.

o.o Not sure what you mean, but in Star Ocean 3, there is this system called the Heat Up Gauge. If you can hit a strong monster enough times, you can get these bonuses depending on what type of attack you used to fill in the gauge. You can either get 3*EXP, 2*Fol, HP and MP regeneration*10 after each battle( I think ), or higher chance of getting item drops.
After maintaining 15 battles without losing the Heat Up Gauge, you can get all 4 of those bonuses in each battle you complete while maintaining the Heat Up Gauge.
