I do agree, she should see a doctor who can perform genetic tests on her and the child in order to get an idea of the child's health at birth.

Anyway, my point with that analogy would be, at what odds would you be willing to play that game? 1/10? 1/100? 1/1000? At what point would you be willing to take that bullet for the chance of a million dollars? In fact, my analogy was faulty. Instead of me pointing the gun at you, how about I point it at your child and give you the same offer? 1/10? 1/100? 1/1000? At what chance are you willing to put his life on the line?
There is always a chance for a defect.
By your logic, I should always abort because of that chance for my baby to be born with a defect. If everyone followed your logic, the human race would die out. I think you are right in trying to weigh out the consiquences, but you don't seem to have thought through your statement very well.

Anyway. No one here can really give the advise that this persons mother needs. Unless someone here is a doctor. The best thing for this persons mom would be to go to a doctor, and also to talk to her fiance. Everyone seems to be forgeting that this is also his blood and his DNA adding to the process. What will his feelings be if she has a abortion, or if she gives the baby up for adoption?

I am a firm believer in doing the best you can to uphold your own personal beliefs. If she is against abortion like she says she is, she needs to hold on to her beliefs and go through with the pregnancy, because that is what she believes in.

Well if you abort the baby then it's a 1/0 chance because they never get the chance. Point is that every single baby would be aborted because there is always a chance of genetic defect. Until we are able to screen for diseases before fertilization and make our super babies this is the best way we have and as much as I'm sure it's not fun to have a genetic defect am also about as equally sure that it's not fun to be dead.
I agree with Chalda on this matter.. Its basically everything I will try to explain to my mom the next time I call her [she lives far away] Thank you, Cha Cha heart

Although, I agree with some of you out there who mentioned the pricing and cost of all this; she told me that a cezarian [however its spelt] is 9000 [that was when she had me] and she cannot afford it.. But I hate thinking about having a brother or sister murdered before I met them... It terrifies me, actually...
Maybe its because of the break-up and the fact that there's not a whole lot of family around me anymore, and I feel apathy?
Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

You are more then welcome sweet heart and I do understand exactly what you are talking about. If you want further explination you can PM me ok?

It's odd how many people I have known that never considered abortion until it happened to them, and then they became pro-choice.

The thing that concerns me with your situation first-off is your mother's age. I know it's been said here already, but the older a woman becomes, the more potential there is for some very serious birth defects to come about. What is your mother's health condition? Her diet? I hope she doesn't smoke? If anything, she needs to get to a doctor ASAP to have a very thorough health examination and the advice of a doctor.

Another thing she has to consider is, again, her age. If she wants to, and decides to have this baby, she has to consider that she'll be in her 60s when this child graduates high school.

The next thing to take into account is the finances. We all know that the first few years of a child's life they're a pooping machine. When my mom had my brother, she was spending several hundred dollars on diapers a month - and that was 10 years ago, so I couldn't even tell you what the cost of diapers is now. Next, I would doubt if your mother still has all your baby clothes, so using / finding hand-me-downs might be a bit tricky. If that's the case, then with the financial issue if she has this baby she may need to resort to getting clothes from goodwill or thrift stores.

Adoption is always an issue, but again, you stated that she already has a reputation to uphold in her work life and doing that may destroy her reputation. There is the possibility of her moving to a different workplace and starting over, though she's at the age in her life when she needs stability, not starting over from scratch.

Hopefully things will work out for the best for everyone in this situation. It's really a shame though, that your mother wasn't using birth control... I have to say that was really stupid on her part. Did she honestly think she couldn't get pregnant? eek Heck, there's people out there - my parents for example - that do everything right (condoms, the pill, and diaphragms at the same time) and still get pregnant. Since she wasn't using any kind of protection, this really shouldn't be a shock to her at all... neutral

It just makes me sick.. It makes no sense what so ever..... stare
I could have a brother or sister right now, uhh... I cant think about it anymore
