Armand listened to her words with a heavy heart, expecting her to say something terrible about him, or beg for her life, or run away... but, with each new word, his head perked a little more in surprise of her bravery. So, she wasn't going to run? And she didn't see him as some horrible, violent creature? How... strange, and yet slightly... relieving.

"I won't give you a reason, Kaya. But there are some things I do on impulse, some things I can not help, that might show you how different I am. And, with the way I've been treated in the past, I can not always act kind. It is... It is just hard, sometimes." Then he stood, pausing in his hesitance of what to do, for he had never been one to comfort. But he inched over to the female, and lined his red eyes up with hers. "I understand that this is confusing, but I will admit that games like this are just part of my life. I am Armand, I adore trickery, and I can never stop it. But I believe that there is still a chance for my heart, for my soul. It will simply take time."

He almost leaned closer, without thought or consideration, but he stopped himself. No. Not now. I can't take this sudden burst of emotion... it's just too much.

"I am thankful for your understanding, Kaya. Thank you."

She sighed. He was so vague.

Her heart raced and she froze as he stood and slowly approached her. But at his ever sorrowful words, she relaxed and stood up also.
For a moment something like anger went through her. Was he implying she couldn't handle him? ….No, he was probably just voicing his fears up front, to try and push her away, or avoid later hurt. What a pansy. She thought judgingly.

"Don't be thankful... I'm not doing you a favor... I'm..." She stopped. She almost said something along the lines of- 'I'm here because I see your heart... and I feel the need to shelter it... warm it...' but that was absurd. She wouldn't say such a thing.

Again, she sighed. "You're welcome, I suppose." She said in defeat. She took a step closer and leaned her head out, to where their noses where touching. Kaya gave him a small smile, still a brush away from him, and then turned sharply to face the other way.
"So... How does one become a vampire?" She asked nonchalantly, but very interested. More specifically she wanted to know how Armand had become a vampire.

Armand's nose wrinkled in slight agitation at Kaya's willingness to accept him so easily. It wasn't as if he was mad... no, that would be meaningless. But here she was, brushing off that fact as easily as dust on a summer day. Of course, he still had to be thankful for her understanding, for if it had been any other Helix, they would have been gone by now.

"Our transformations are kept as secrets," he murmured suspiciously, and yet he was intrigued himself by her curiosity. It was not often that someone would stand to listen to a vampire: much less often that one would dare to listen about the most painful part of that vampire's life. "Though I will tell you that I went willingly, with one whom I loved. He was kind to me, and taught me much in the ways of honorable vampires." Armand sighed then, turning away just as Kaya had done, and staring at a small patch of moss on the stone wall. "But he was killed, in front of my very eyes. And then when he had survived, he would not come back to me. I spent much time alone, and I will never be the same... BECAUSE OF HIM!" The last words were shouted, and Armand pounded a paw to the ground, his bloody claws screeching against the rough stone.

But he soon calmed, as was his erratic nature, and hung his head. "But that time is over now. I find that loneliness has been the kindest of all roads."

Kaya's ears perked at attention, and she couldn’t help but turn and look when he mentioned 'going willingly with someone he loved'. But he had turned to face away. Suddenly and violently he yelled and Kaya nearly jumped out of her skin. She whirled around and stared at him, on edge, hackles standing strait up. Still uneasy she considered his words with a heavy heart. She knew she shouldn't... but she had to say it, had to ask it. He had gotten too into it. Kaya had to know who he was. She just stood there for a while, contemplating the benefits of knowing the whole of this captivating tale, verses the consequence of highly upsetting a vampire.

Kaya was no coward. She would ask. Her voice started out small, but grew braver as she spoke.
"Armand.... who is he?" But she didn't stop there... the way Kaya figured it, this was crazy, may as well go all-out.
"And what did he do to make you this way?" She wanted to step forward and comfort him, but knew better than that. There was a thin line between brave and stupid, but a line non-the-less.

Armand sighed quietly, pressing his forehead against the cool stone of the cavern's wall. An image of another helix, strong, beautiful, and fierce, popped into his mind. Red hair, blue eyes, a smile of amazingly sharp teeth, yet a heart of the softest gold. This creature had been his master and his lover... but that was past.

"Marius. That is who he was," he growled, rubbing his head against the stone. "I used to live in a pack of many orphaned pups, led by a few Helixes whom we called 'masters'. But Marius was different from all the rest. He was kind-hearted and caring. He took the time to sit down and tell us stories, vivid, imaginative stories. He loved us all, and yet he loved one more than the rest." He lifted his head up now, staring at the wall as if it were a screen, showing his memories as clear as daylight.

"Marius singled me out. He would lead me away, to beautiful, private places. He told me stories of lore, taught me how to appreciate beauty, and taught me how to feel pleasure. And what pleasure it was, even though I was little. I understood nothing about love, but he taught it all to me, and swore to love me. But he was hiding a secret, and I knew it. He would disappear in the daytime, saying he was hunting. He was terribly strong, and had violent mood swings. He even disciplined me for telling him that I knew he was different; but I came to enjoy the pain, and even crave it. He said he was creating a monster, and that I needed to leave him, to save my innocence while I could."

A single tear fell from his eye, but it soon disappeared into the thick black fur. "I couldn't leave him. I never could. So he gave his secret to me, and I began to change, until I became what I am. And he taught me the ways of the vampires, taught me to kill mercifully and justly. But, just when I thought we'd be together forever, another pack of vampires stole him and burned him alive. They forced me to eat my childhood friend by starving me to the point of death. Then they made me trust them, and serve them. And I did."

"But I soon left them, and struck out on my own. I was hurt and confused, but nevertheless ruthless. I wanted to rule, to hurt, to hate. So I started small groups, here and there. But I never fit into the leadership role, and I eventually set out on my lonesome. It felt better than being around those that I could never love."

His eyes darkened then, and his teeth were exposed in a snarl of pure hate. "Then he came back. He hadn't died, no! He had been there the whole time! And I told him to come back to me, to stay with me forever!" The words were harsh barks, loud enough to break a few small stones from the roof of the cave. But he collapsed on the floor from his rant, his eyes sealed shut.

"Then he left. I have not seen him since."

Kaya was filled with both shock and deep pity. She was appalled. She couldn't fathom such a life as cruel and heart retching as what Armand was letting her glimpse.
She rushed over to the crushed vampire and buried her nose under his muzzle, lying on the ground with him. Her eyes were watering and she had that burning feeling in the back of her nose that you get before you start to cry.
"Armand...." She whispered. Any past awkwardness or uneasiness she felt around him was gone now. All that remained was a need to take his pain away and shield him from anything like it happening again.

With her nose still below his she said "I can't bear to see you hurting. I don't care that I only just met you; I want to make you happy... Please look at me…”
What else could she ask? 'Forget Marius'? How could she ask such a thing? You can't help who you fall in love with...

Armand slowly opened his eyes, his heart jerking slowly back to normal as he felt Kaya come close to him. Her touch was so gentle, so understanding... unlike many of the other wolves he had met, who had ran away screaming, or instantly attacked him. Of course, he supposed that he had deserved it, taunting them and threatening them with his dark heart. But Kaya had seen past it all; and more importantly, she had softened that sharp hate that hid within him. Whereas he would have felt hate at any other for being so close, he only felt a warm, calming sensation. Even though his mind denied it, his heart knew the truth of that feeling.

He lifted his head, glancing down at her with his red eyes. "You would make me happy? Even though I am... undesirable in manners? " It was more of a disbelief than surprise. Would this female truly wish to stay with him, through the dark and cold, even if there was a chance that he would hate her for it?

No, he wouldn't hate her. Not this one, whom his heart beat strong for even after only a night of acquaintance.

"I would... appreciate your help, Kaya. I really would... but there is always danger. Do you truly wish for a life such as that?"

How could he question her? She stood and looked into his eyes. They reflected her strong will, determination, and seriousness.

"I will stay, as long as you want me. I would not abandon you."
She had met so many other helixes, and none could compare.
"What else could I do?" Her tone had become light, almost joking, but with an undertone of mock. "Leave here and forget you? Impossible." She smirked, inviting him to perk up.

Armand could only stare at her, his red eyes wide. Feelings that had lain dead for so long re-surfaced in his chest, threatening to overwhelm him with emotion. It was an alien feeling, but it was a good feeling, and he wasn't afraid of admitting it. How could this one helix, this beautiful female, change his heart through the course of one dark night?

No, enough disbelief. This was real, and it was time he accepted it.

"Kaya..." he breathed, seeming to be at a loss for words. Well, that was a first.

"It seems... that it is also impossible for me to shut you out. I... well, I want you to stay. And... I..." but he couldn't find the courage to finish the three simple words. Instead, he smiled, his first true smile in many years, and hung his head over her neck, holding tight, in a strong hug.

"I think you know how I feel..." he whispered in her ear, a bit of mischievous playfulness returning to his tone.

When he touched her, held her, her heart raced so that she thought it was visibly shaking her chest. She held her breath without even noticing it.

"Do I?" Kaya said, meaning for it to sound witty and taunting, but she feared it came out nervous.
Yet she followed through with, "Tell me." She then placed her paw around his, further entwining them.
"After all, if I'm to be with you, we should be candid and upfront with these things..." She smiled an easy, natural smile.

Armand grinned, then gave a small nod of his own. His skin tingled under the silver fur of his paw as he felt hers rest upon his, and he lifted his head back up so that he could look into her eyes, his muzzle a hair's breadth from hers.

"I love you, Kaya."

The words seemed distant, unfamiliar, old. But they were from his heart, and his brain could not stop them this time. It had been many, many years since he had told those words to another, to a new acquaintance that he had barely met. But he couldn't stop them, couldn't stop the rush of feelings that threatened to burst his heart.

Then he chuckled, nudging her cheek with his nose. "Breath, Kaya. I wouldn't want you to suffocate on my account." He gave her an affectionate lick on the cheek.

Even though Kaya knew what he was going to say, it still hit her hard.

"That's not helping." She mumbled as he licked her cheek. It was a joke, but still true. She tried to slyly take a deep breath, but she knew he would notice.
She couldn't look away from his brilliant red eyes. "So we're in love. What do we do now?" She honestly wasn't sure. But she figured all that mattered is that she was with him. She pulled away from him, and playfully jumped on his back, so that her front paws lay across his shoulders sideways. Her tail wagged, awaiting his response.

Armand couldn't help but chuckle himself at her response, though he was not exactly sure of the answer for her question. Many things went through his head, things long forgotten and now resurfaced. But some were not things that he would just openly say, having just awoken from his dark stupor. Of course, he was not one to hide the truth.

"I say that the first thing we must do is find a new place to live. Somewhere lighter, friendlier. I understand that the north is harsh, but not all of it is as harsh as these parts. And I do not think you would like to spend your life in this dark cave... or would you?" he asked, adding a playful spin to the ending words.

Then, without thinking, he used his great strength to roll over, while making sure to be gentle, and trapped Kaya beneath him. He stared into her eyes, so bright and loving, and his own heart beat raced.

"Of course, if we plan for other things... we might need a bigger cave," he voiced mischievously into her ear.

Her breath caught jaggedly at his words. "You dog!" Kaya said as though insulted, however she wrapped her paws around his neck and gently licked his nose.
"Yes.... I would like a bigger cave. That is, only if you wish for a bigger cave?"

Armand smiled, the feeling of her paws on his neck warm and inviting. His heart skipped a beat at her sweet kiss, and his eyes narrowed in playful anger. "Dog? Believe me, madame. I am no dog," he said, matter-of-factly. But he realized the real meaning of his offer, and her question, and his brain was numbed at the realization that he really DID want a bigger cave.

"I... I do wish for a bigger cave. Yes, I do," he whispered, affectionately touching his nose to hers. "I wish for us to... to..." but the words caught in his throat. Time would reveal his wishes, and there was no need to rush them.

"You have no idea how happy you've made me," he whispered, folding himself down beside her, so that they were facing each other on the rocky floor. He too wrapped his paws around her neck, pulling her closer. "And to think that we were only strangers in the night."
