Skies of Arcadia and the crazy 35-ton 1905 Corliss-type steam engine with an 18-foot flywheel down at the local museum. I could watch that stupid thing for hours. sweatdrop

Back in '94 a awesome game called Final Fantasy 3 (6) came out. That got me into it.

My mother was obsessed(and still is) with antique furtanature and clothes. We always had some interesting items floating around the house. My favorite was our fainting couth. It's lovely tan with a ruffled skirt and wooden claws for legs. We also have a huge steamer trunk in the yeard and it's beaten down and worn. I love it.

Plus the fac that my gran and her siblings saved all the stuff from the world wars their brothers were in. I have a WWII Jacket with authentic patches and my uncles name on the pocket.

I also love Cat's odn't dance to peices(though not steampunk it's vintage).

So I always loved it growing up. But I never knew it had a name untill I kept hearing people starting to over use the tearm on DA lately.

Ive been a long term fantasy lover. I usually read fantasy or gothic or midevil type of litature.I watched the league of extrodinary gentalmen and saw the mix of modern fantasy and steam machinery and wondered what it was.Until last year I ran across an ad for Califur 08's theme steampunk and I looked it up and began to turn into a steampunk fur. I looked into the style of clothing and aspects of themes and feel in love.

My early reading included Conan Doyle, Wilde, Dickens, various SF authors, fantasy, machinery, antiques, metals and jewels, art, crafts and construction. I love British history. Put all that together and steampunk is inevitably appealing biggrin

for me... got to be fictional novella that really made me like the genre, but before that, i used to love antiquities, and i used to think how cool it would be if knights had flintlock pistols and big clanky armour. then I bought "Mortal Engines" a few years back, and have since got the other 3, and then "The Edge Chronicles" which is more of a steampunk fantasy, which got me into the genre itself, and recently i discovered the term Steampunk (and now i am indoctrinating my 7yr old sister into it! haha)

but i think that Steampunk is very similar to the Mod style from 30 years ago (i of course wasnt around then, but my dad was, and he still is a MOD, like a lot of the people who were into that style) as it was a phase that you were less likely to grow out of (unlike goth, emo, chav, etc) as it was a much more mature stereotype, and more likely to be accepted by my parents (my dad's parents used to think it was great that my dad would go everywhere in a suit, being a MOD and all, and my parents think it is great that i choose to go out in a shirt and waistcoat, even if i add my own little eccentricity's to it.

What more is there to be said?

hmm...I'll have to second!

Same, but I discovered Steampunk by looking for non- frilly Lolita (a near imposability) like outfits, and found I liked Steampunk better.

Skies of Arcadia definitely started me up with steampunk, same goes with Final Fantasy VII and some parts of Final Fantasy IX. I loved Lolita-type stuff, but I could never imagine myself wearing it; it's just too fancy for my liking, and all the etiquette that I have to follow to be a lolita was ridiculous to a rebel like me.

My mom's friend, who is kind of eccentric, actually told me the definition of steampunk. He wanted me to design a steampunk van for him. I am terrible at designing vehicles and whatnot, but it really got my gears going.

Well I'd always loved Victorian fashion and steam technology has always looked far more interesting than the modern stuff. I adore vintage things after all.

I fell in love with steampunk after reading Girl Genius and then looking up all manner of interesting steampunk devices. Yay!

Well, since my current steampunk obsession is Western Steampunk, I would have to say that right now it is the movie Wild Wild West. It is one of the only times I've seen a steampunk type of story in a western setting.

I really don't understand why people haven't embraced this idea more.
I've got an extra mule I'm going to give a new, steampunk-style.

As for steampunk itself, I've always been a fan of literature that takes place during the Victorian Era. One of my favorite stories has always been The Time Machine by H.G. Wells. I guess that it is the book that got me into steampunk.

I've always love smashing together fantasy and science fiction, and I always loved the "cyber western" style of fiction, then several years ago I began to dabble in more of the works.

Final Fantasy 7 I believe was my start, I mean, a good few of those mako reactors could pass for a steam boiler. Dark Cloud 2 and Skies of Arcadia only helped this along further, as did Warcraft and Fly For Fun.

And I do fondly remember seeing movies such as Wild Wild West, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, 20000 Leagues under the Sea, and The Time Machine.

I love the raw mechanical yet artistic look of the machinery, you can see all the inner workings, yet it all meshes together beautifully.

The style of dress isn't bad either, it's classy, yet rugged :3

When I was 8 or 9 I discovered my Dad's books, notably Edgar Rice Burroughs, H.G. Wells and Jules Verne, (as well as Robert Louis Stephenson, Arthur Conan Doyle, H.P. Lovecraft, and C.S. Lewis' space trilogy {of which I recommend only the first two; That Hideous Strength is ungainly and slow}, so I've been a fan of late 19th/early 20th century SF-fantasy most of my life. I also love the Victorian aesthetic...I get nostalgic for a time before I was born.

And of course, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was my favorite movie when I was really little, so I guess I was pretty much predestined to be a steampunker.

I've been fascinated with history ever since I was old enough to understand my mother's rants/lessons. Over time, my tastes just gravitated to the Victorian era, and my awareness of steampunk grew from there.
I actually discovered the phrase and the art style on deviantart.

Since I was around 10, I liked the victorian aesthetic. And when I finally got the internet, I just ran away with it. I also liked steamy movies like Wild Wild West, League of Extrodinary Gentlemen, and that Disney Movie were they go to Atlantis. I also like Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli Films. When I finally discovered the Steampunk Forum in the F&S forum it all made sense. I guess that's what happens when you have a victorian enthusiast that gets brainwashed into washing SciFi by her older brother.
