Even in her panic-stricken state she couldn't help but allow a typical thought to cross her mind. That thought being that the demon's voice reminded her greatly of a dry-throated half-suffocated weasel. Or more specifically a dry-throated half-suffocated demonic weasel that was now taunting her with his calling. Her heart was pounding in her throat now, from fear and exertion.
She wanted to stop with every fiber of her being but as he said, he was looking for her. Stopping meant he'd find. Being found meant he'd kill her. Dieing wasn't something she was eager to do. So she ran on, pushing herself harder then ever before until his voice was heard again.
He'd found her! Her eyes went wide and she turned her head sharply to try and spot him. In doing so she looked away from the ground and did not notice the large root until her front right leg connected with it. She made a sort of strangled yelp as she pitched forward but the sound was cut off.
Thorn hit the ground with all the grace of a brick. For a moment she simply lay there with her mane fanned out on either side of her head and her tail pooled by her rear legs. "I really will be found if I stay here..." Her voice was scarcely a whisper due to her both trying to be quiet and not having the air to really speak. Without another word she pushed herself to her feet as quickly as she could trying to ignore the fact that she must have looked like a real wreck at the moment.

There! His head whipped around towards the sound of pain and the rest of his body followed. Through the branches of the trees he glimpsed a pale body that was all to visible in the dark. He beat his wings in a swifter tempo to build up speed. He could still see her there. She was getting up but was too slow. Too slow by far!
He could almost taste her delicious fear. That fear would be his nourishment, something to dwell upon when the rest of his life was dull.
He was almost overhead now. She had gotten to her feet but had not yet begun to run again yet. Too slow. He dived again but this time was silent. His front legs were stretched out almost as if he was planning on landing, but he had other things in mind. He aimed to knock the mare back over again. If he could do that then he was certain she would have no chance of escape.
No chance at all.

It happened quickly. So quickly that the painted wing mare didn't have time to really process what was going on. There was the rushing sound of something cutting through the sky. She had begun to turn her head and the sound was joined by a feeling and a face. As she hit the ground her eyes were wide with fear and panic. He had caught her.
Without wasting a single second she scrambled to regain her feet. Her eyes stayed glued on the kalona stallion all the while. She could hear her heart pounding in her ears and could feel it racing in her chest. At the same time she could hear a tiny voice screaming at her to get away.
She was greatly inclined to listen to this voice so the moment her hooves were beneath her once again she made to take off. She would not be killed like this. She was not such an easy mark. She refused to be.

Xelloss lost some of his momentum when he struck the hapless mare. It was unavoidable, really. He had to slow down in order to knock her around a little bit.
But he had indeed knocked her around.
Instead of the quick swoop and quick swing back upwards of his previous strike this time Xelloss was forced to take a cumbersome looping circle back into the sky. She had gotten up again and started running once more. He could see that as he finally cleared the last of the reaching tree branches. That she was running wasn't the important and deciding factor. What was... is that he could still see her.
Which meant that the hunt was still on.
"Why don't you come baaaaaaaack here?" He began to gain speed again, tail and mane whipping out behind him. "It isn't like I'm going to do anything... Except kill you!" His raucous laughter filled the sky and he spun himself into another dive. Like his feint, he wasn't directly aiming for his prey. This time he was deliberately aiming off to one side. The area was clearer and it would be easier for him to make the dive without losing speed. That, and he wanted to begin to steer the mare. From the sky he could see a river rushing to one side of her. If he could back her up against that... she would be his.

The next blow that she had half been expecting didn't come. Peering fearfully over her shoulder she caught sight of him climbing back in to the sky. It seemed snakes had trouble striking twice quickly in a row. Pressing herself on as quickly as she could she heard his voice boring once again into her skull. Her eyes narrowed in anger at him for doing this to her and at herself for being such a disgrace while it was happening. Still, she pressed on despite frustrated and terrified tears blurring the edges of her vision.
He dove once more but this time she caught sight of him. Moving like a rather violent dancer she dug her rear hooves into the ground and tried to turn. The movement sent her back onto her hind legs for a brief second as she pivoted. He hadn't hit her this time. An almost triumphant smile spread across her face thinking that she had done well. In the span of a heartbeat her hooves were tearing at the ground again as she ran away in the direction she had landed in. She speed away from him and away from the water desperately trying to get somewhere safe.
Her only goal at the moment was survival. The only thought that pushed her through the trees once more was a slim chance of getting away and living. That was all she really needed. Thinking her accident had been skill had put a bit of false confidence in her. She had a chance now, or so she thought.
