Ambroise had set off much later than Claude had. His wings made it unnecessary for him to travel across awkward terrain and when he deemed it the appropriate time he had taken flight. Soaring across the open skies, his descent had been steady and relatively uneventful. Beneath his hooves the landscaped changes - from cliff faces to trees, to trees into plains and at last into rolling sand dunes. An otherwise calming experience and most certainly not one that challenged his fitness, he came into land with a very soft 'thump' against the sands and furled his wings against his sides. A quick shake to rid the tingling from his flanks as the currents left him and he was prepared once more.
Suffice to say, Ambroise's new charge hadn't yet arrived and for the duration of his wait he had been content to stare out towards the horizon and the 'endless' ocean that lay beyond. The ocean was not endless of course and he new better than to consider it as such but the illusion was simply a grand one. It had only been when he heard the thunder of hooves upon the sands that his eyes lifted from the horizon and shifted towards the incoming individual.
A few moments later...
Thump.
Evidently Claude hadn't seen him upon his approach and had happily collapsed on the sand when he arrived. He truly was a very unfit student and Ambroise raised his eyes heavenwards as he drifted quietly towards the colt and gazed down upon his tired form. His expression was largely unreadable but one might have expected him to raise a brow at the state that Claude was in. Luckily for Claude, Ambroise made no such attempts.
"Get up," he ordered and nudged him lightly with his hoof. "It is unhealthy for you to lie in your own sweat."

Claude cracked one eye, wanting so desparatley to belive that Ambroise was just a dream, and that he could go on sleeping. But the second statment dashed his dreams and forced him to get up with a discontented grunt. He looked at Ambroise sideways and chuckled painfully. He wasn't -really- going to make him fly after that trek, was he? surely Claude at earned at least a small rest, right? But he had managed to choose -the- most stoic teacher in the world, and so he knew nothing of what Ambriose was thinking. He chuckled again. "Can I at least get a little cleaned off before we start training?" His altirior motive was that he might get a bit more aware from the cold waters. But, again, Ambroise was an engima wrapped in a mystery.

"Quite simply..." He ruffled his wings and proceeded to walk away from the stallion. Evidently by the expression on his face, Ambroise had all but shattered his little dream and it brought some amusement to him deep inside. It was a cruel form of amusement, but the mountains had been quiet as of late and his pleasures had to come from somewhere. "You are to walk up and down the beach until you regather your composure," he came to a halt and glanced over his shoulder, his expression matter-of-fact and tone not to be questioned. "The walk need not be brisk, it is only to cool down the muscles and to remove the sweat from your limbs - if you sweat while you're doing that then I will have to rethink my plans," he pointed out calmly.
"If you wish to take a swim then do so," he continued, rolling his shoulders in a lose shrug. His tasks laid out bare before his new student, he once again walked away from the smaller soquili and began to seek out a desirable vantage point as well as a suitable cliff to knock Claude off. Needless to say, finding a cliff without jagged rocks at the bottom was a task in itself! He would have to skim the coasts once he was satisfied that Claude was settled, perhaps even dip his legs into the waters to test them. Oi, all this additional energy to teach a creature how to fly when he should have known years ago... then again his mother was incapable of flight so he had a viable excuse.
...It just threw a bit of a spanner in the works.

Claude laughed jubalently and then pranced a bit. He ran into the water and shivered violently as the cold waters hit his aching body. He shoved his head under the water and flopped down. After a time he poked his head out for air. The cool water now lapped gently against him. He lay back and shut his eyes before looking for his new teacher. He found him searching for seomthing. What it was he could only guess. He dismised it and set to washing off the sweat and dirt from his now fairly dingy coat. It was fairly difficult since he had nothing with which to wash down with. So he just rolled in the sand, hoping it would scrub off the muck.
He looked up and around again to his teacher. Not seeing him he shook himself off. He flopped onto the ground adn scratched his ear the in the dog-like-fashion he'd picked up from his mother. He looked around again with big eyes, trying to fend off the darkness and see forms. He gently preened himself, the quiet closing in on him. He didn't like the dark...

Ambroise's search hadn't taken as long as he anticipated and has he looped round within the air to return to his student he was less than impressed to see aforementioned student preening. Either Claude was being deliberately rebellious or he had forgotten the tasks he had been given. The stallion's expression clouded considerably at this and he remained in the air for a few moments longer to regather his composure lest he go through the younger stallion and bury him in the sand up to his head. A cruel punishment but a fitting one who was lazy and yet had the gall to ask him for help!
Nevertheless it wasn't long before his mental ranting had settled and he was able to land with the same unreadable and stoic expression that he had been wearing for the last few years. Furling his wings tight against his sides, he stalked towards Claude as silent as any predator might and very slowly leant down to whisper in his ear. By the gods, if Claude disliked the dark now he'd hate it by the time Ambroise was through with him...either that, or he'd get over his fear pretty damn quick. "What part of 'walk' do you not understand, student?" he purred darkly. Once he had finished this he pulled away again and strode towards the shore to inspect the lapping waves. It would be dark in a few hours, they didn't really have long to get started on his immediate training.
"Now get up and do those laps like I said," he ordered sharply, glancing over his shoulder with a very pointed look. Well, if it was too dark to fly at the very least they could start on his endurance training, no one could say Ambroise wasn't flexible when it came to his training!

Claude yelped a little at the slight scare and hopped up instantly. He looked around for a moment and said uncertainly, "I thought you said to get cooled down, and I could swim if I wanted for a little bit. I swam and got cooled down." Once he began speaking it was impossible to stop. As a matter of fact the farther along he got the louder and fast the words slipped past his loose lips. His ears swivled back and he clenched his eyes shut, regretting his words instantly. He took a hesitant step back and said even more uncertainly, "B-but, I'll g-go do that anyway..." He turned quickly and bolted not wanting to be around when his words dunk in, if they hadn't already.
Claude slowed down once he was a safe distence away and checked over his shoulder. Well, could he be anymore immature? He flipped his mane out of his eyes and turned a head. So, he managed to call upon the scariest teacher in all of the land. Maybe it was his stoic expression, and maybe it was the way he moved. But Claude expected it was the impression he gave off that he could kick the a** of anyone that came his way.
The thought made him check back over his shoulder again. So, he'd hated to be on the recieving end of one of his attacks. But, then again, being the spindely youth that he was, he'd hate to be on the recieving end of any attack. Which, he sighed, as probably why he didn't try to attack Azzan, a vastly older and stronger stallion than he.
Claude turned around at the foot of the cliffs and trudged back. So, Ambroise was right, Claude felt must calmer now that he'd had his walk. He came to a stop at Ambroises shadow, which was considerably longer, now that the sun was setting. He looked away and said, "I apologize... for my earlier rudeness. Both disrgarding your instructions and speaking out of line, sir," he muttered.

As Claude had bolted off following his rambled series of excuses, Ambroise had concluded most logically that what had occured was a misunderstanding. They may have spoken the same language but the conflicting cultures meant that what one said and meant wasn't necessarily the same where the other individual came from. Ambroise was a highlander and a skilled fighter, Claude was a lowlander and just out of puberty. This in itself was enough to cause slight friction and as a result Ambroise actually let it slide. Eventually Claude would have to be educated and he would learn what was expected of him but even Ambroise could see that expecting him to know immediately was both unreasonable and potentially overwhelming for the younger stallion. Thus, it was with this in mind that Ambroise did what he generally avoided doing and Claude got away with the slip up.
...Not that it would happen again, mind you.
Satisfied with his decision the radiant stallion had ruffled his wings close to his sides and had gazed out idly towards the horizon. As the sun slowly began to set, sinking beneath the waves he became aware of the approaching hoofbeats and shifted his gaze. Sure enough, Claude came to a halt nearby and it seemed that the walk had done him some good. The tension was out of his muscles, he seemed more at ease and even when his head hung a little as he apologised he seemed to be in much better spirits. Ambroise could approve of this and was at least content to know that even a good walk could ease the panicky aspects of a lowlander's personality too.
"This will be the first and last time that I permit you to do so, perhaps I did not make my instructions as clear as they should have been," he admonished with a small nod and offered a rare smile. "Now that you are properly cooled down you may rest and preen for the rest of the evening."

Claude looked both ways and then sideways at Ambroise. He narrowed his eyes and said, "Thank you," though he wasn't sure if he was. Ambroise had the knack for being surprising, Claude had noticed in the short time he'd known him. He was greatful that he wasn't repremanded for his earlier actions, however. He gently lowered himself into the sand, slightly cooler from the lack of sun. He wasn't exactly at ease, since this might have proven to be awkward. He gave Ambroise another sideways glance before she straightened out his feathers again. It wasn't as thurough as last time, since not many were out of place. And the act wasn't vain, it was just that having feathers out of place tickled and often smarted a bit.
Claude looked out at the sunset after he had finished and smiled lightly. "My mother," he said unsurly, if only to fill a potentially awkward silence, "said that no matter where you are in the world... you can always feel close to the ones you love. All you have to do it look up, and know that they are looking at the same sky as you." He chuckled and flipped his mane out of his eyes. He did feel close to her, even now, because she was watching the sunset now too, just as they always had together.

"And she was right," Ambroise replied simply. His mother had said the same thing to him when he was a child, at had always brought him comfort and as he had matured he could see the logic behind the statement as well. The sky was always the same, there was just one endless sky above their heads and no matter how far you walked it would still be there. It was sweet (in a manner of speaking) how such a simple observation could have such an impact on the lives of adult and foal alike - the comfort it brought was extraordinary in comparison to any other word that could be utterred from another's lips.
Quaint.
"Get some rest," he advised at last and with that ruffled his own feathers, glancing briefly at the radiant plumes before shuffling a short distance away to find a region he deemed to be comfortable to sleep in. Coming to a halt by a small overhanging ledge, he slipped underneath it and curled himself into a ball where he slept rather uncomfortably. He hated the lowlands and to think he could relax in them would be foolish!
