Serenity giggled at the Prince's vehemence and turned her attention back to Gaunt.

"We grew up without technology," she replied in explanation. "Mother is from ... well, I suppose we might call it a medieval world ... she's an elf, so ... but she lives in Gaia now, so she's starting to get used to it. I know she really loves showers, at least. Indoor plumbing, electric lights ..."

She giggled, finally starting to feel at ease with the man.

"You were too," Ian stuck his tongue out at the Prince. "You were making fun of Mom and your dad!"

The more he thought about it, the more he liked the idea. Gaunt was a handsome enough fellow, and Ian knew that his mom was very pretty. He grinned and leaned over to the Prince so that he could whisper to him.

"Hey, do you want to play a game?" he hissed. "Let's see if we can get your dad and my mom to go on a date!"

He had no idea how they might accomplish it, or even if they would - his mom, he knew, wasn't interested in the dating scene, and for all he knew Gaunt already had a girlfriend or something. For that matter, he wasn't entirely certain of what a date even was. But just the idea of playing with them was appealing, and he couldn't resist it.

Gaunt coudln't help but to feel a little bit accomplished when he heard the giggle. For all this time up until now, she had been red-faced and tight-lipped. Now she was starting to talk to him, and apparently enjoying herself. It felt like he just climbed over a huge hurdle.

He nods slowly as he listens to Serenity speak and he smiles gently to her. "That's kind of hard for me to imagine, personally. I grew up around technology." He chuckles lightly and he shrugs his shoulders a little. "I've even said I was born with a game controller in my hands. I've always had gadgets around, and because of that It's hard for me to imagine what it's like to grow up and live without it." He approaches the front counter of the cafe. There was a clear-glass section next to the register, where various desert toppings were held. Some of the tables and booths were already taken, people enjoying some hot lunch as well as some cold treats. The cafe buzzed softly with conversation. Gaunt quickened his step to approach the counter and, trying to cut off any protest from Serenity, ordered four parfaits. Two regular, and two small for their Surprises.

The Prince stuck his tongue out back at Ian and then he grinned at the other Surprise's suggestion. He giggled softly and he tilts his head, whispering back. "And I thought we were getting in trouble for making trouble for them. Lets do it!" He grinned at the other second, Gaunt completely unaware of the whispered conversation going on behind him.

Serenity followed after Gaunt, doing her best to keep up with him when he sped up towards the counter. She let him order for them, since he apparently knew what he was doing, and rather than getting in his way she looked around the cafe. It seemed nice enough. It might not be the one Skye and Syrus had gone to, but it was definitely the kind of place where Serenity wouldn't mind going to again - if the food turned out as good as it looked.

As the total flashed on the small screen, she reached for her purse and pulled out some coins, fully intent on paying for her and Ian's shares.

"So do you come here often?" she asked him as she held out the money for him to take.

Ian's lavender eyes glowed mischievously as he grinned at the Prince. He wasn't sure just how they were going to accomplish their goal, but now that it was a set goal, he was determined to make it work.

Somehow.

"So how we going to do this?" he whispered back, leaning closer to the Prince so that he could be even quieter. "Do you have any ideas?"

Maybe if he could get his mom to spill something, Gaunt seemed like the kind of guy to help her out - and when his grandpa helped her grandma like that, it always made her blush ... and Gaunt seemed to be amused by how much Ian's mom blushed ...

Gaunt smiles softly and he shakes his head, waving a hand and smiling warmly when Serenity offered her money. "No, no. I got this." He shrugs a little and he smiles a little more warmly. "Think of this as you being my guest." This wasn't a date. Though in some ways some people might try to call it one. He smiles softly and he shrugs. "I've been here a time or two. It's.. one of those hole-in-the-wall places that is really good." He smiles softly at her as he pays out of his own money and moves down the line a bit, looking over the selection of toppings. "Well, Prince? What do you want?"

Prince glances at Ian as he whispered at him and he shrugs a little bit, still whispering. "Ah.. well maybe if we could just.. make sure they have a good time? If they really enjoy themselves, they'd want to be together. Like friends!" Poor Prince was essentially a newborn. He didn't have a clue how romance worked. But Gaunt's voice dragged him out of the conversation and he blinked a few times as he crawled up onto Gaunt's shoulder and peered down at the selection. "I... want.. Strawberries and nuts please!"

Serenity was surprised when Gaunt waved her money away, and she blushed faintly as she returned it to her purse. She had never had anyone pay for anything for her before ...

"Thanks," she murmured softly, shifting Ian into her arms so that he could pick his toppings as well.

Ian was about to tell the Prince what a great idea that was when Serenity pointed him towards the toppings, and the moment his eyes caught sight of the bowls of sweets his mouth started watering and he was completely distracted from the conversation.

"That and that and that and that and that," he pointed at everything in sight. "But more of that stuff than that stuff," he added, "because that stuff looks really good."

He didn't know what any of it was, but it all looked really good!

Serenity was doubtful. "You're sure you're going to eat all of it?" she asked softly.

Ian nodded vigorously. "Every last bite!" he exclaimed.

Serenity knew her son had a voracious appetite, but she still wasn't sure he would eat everything he had asked for. Still ...

"Then just some strawberries and banana for me," she decided. She would also finish whatever Ian didn't. And she liked fruit, so she was happy with her choice.

He smiles softly as she blushed lightly. It was cute to see that coloring of her cheeks still. It was so endearing! He smiles as he picks out his topping. Butterscotch, that was it. So the man behind the counter assembles their sundaes, and hands them over when it was done. Gaunt collects his and the Prince's, waits for Serenity to collect hers and Ian's. As they walk toward the booth, he glances over his shoulder and he looks a little ponderous. "Hey, Serenity. Would you be interested in meeting up every now and then? I mean. You seem like a really good person. I'd like it if we could just hang out every now and then."

Prince threw a glance over his shoulder toward Ian, then hides a giggle behind a hand. They were trying to see if they can get Gaunt and Serenity on a date, but maybe Gaunt was the one taking the initiative. Though if they could make things more interesting.. The Prince reached down and dipped a hand into his ice cream and threw it at Ian. "Take that!"

Of course, the toss likely missed its mark and hit Serenity. Gaunt frowned as he sat the sundaes on the table and got some knapkins and starts to try to clean Serenity up. "Oh.. geeze.. I'm so sorry about that.. I don't know what's gotten into Prince.."

Serenity held her and Ian's ice creams carefully and followed Gaunt towards a booth.

"Meeting up?" she repeated in surprise. Well, why not? Gaunt seemed like a good man - he was kind, generous, and even funny. And after all, Ian and the Prince seemed to get along very well, and Ian needed more friends his own age.

She smiled at Gaunt, trying her hardest not to blush (but failing miserably). "I ... I think I'd like that," she admitted. "I've never really ... hung out with anyone before ..."

She was always so different her schoolmates, who were regular humans (well there was also a naga, but point was she was the only Second). She was about to explain that when she was suddenly hit by a Surprise-fist-sized handful of ice cream, which hit her on the neck and began dripping down into her shirt.

"Gah!" she gasped, more surprised by the cold than anything else, her eyes wide in shock. Sundaes still in hand, she swallowed hard as Gaunt began to clean up the mess on her neck, her face redder than it had been since they had met.

Ian took the opportunity to escape from his mom's arms and jumped down onto the table, nearly skidding out on a spare napkin.

"Nice one," he grinned at Prince, holding his hand up for a high-five. He couldn't have planned it better himself!

He smiles some as he works on cleaning her up. "Well, I'm glad that you'd like that." He bites his lip softly as he tries to get Serenity cleaned up. He was blushing a little too. A little of the ice cream was getting close to a sensitive area after all, and he was trying to take care of the mess without doing anything inappropriate. And he hasn't done anything like that before, so it was a difficult spot for him. But eventually he coudln't do anything else without entering the danger zone, so he settles for leaving the napkin with her while he rescues her sundaes and sets them on the table as well. "I.. I still can't applogize enough, Serenity. If I can do something to make it up, anything, just let me know!"

Prince grinned when Ian came over to him and returned the high five. "Yeah! This is fun!" He giggled.

"Hey now, did you plan this?"
Hands on his hips, he leaned over toward the two Surprises.

"Oh.. uh.. of course not!" The Prince lied, unable to meet Gaunt's eyes. Gaunt shakes his head and he sighs softly. "Oh, Prince.. You're in big trouble when we get home."

Serenity's heart pounded as Gaunt's fingers moved lower and lower on her neck, and she was relieved when he left the napkins where they were and rescued the sundaes instead.

"Thank you," she squeaked, taking up the task where he had left off, wiping the ice cream from her collarbone and where it had already begun to melt down towards the front of her shirt.

Ian's face was one of pure innocence as he sat down on the table and held his hands out for his sundae. "I didn't do anything," he beamed. "I didn't throw any ice cream."

He wasn't going to take the blame. It wasn't as if he had told Prince to throw it after all ... even if he had been thinking it.

Serenity looked at Ian sternly. "You and I," she said softly, but there was a firm note in her voice that showed she was serious, "will have a talk later. In the meantime ..."

She looked back at Gaunt. "I'm going to go to the ladies room to wash up a bit ... I'll be right back."

And, her face still a bright shade of red, she hurried off towards the bathrooms.

He nodded at first when he heard Ian's innocence. He was right, for as far as he could tell. Ian didn't do anything, it was Prince in his newborn lack of knowledge of boundaries and appropriateness who did the deed.

But that all went down the sink when Prince turned in Ian. "Hey! It was your idea to find a way to get Serenity and Gaunt together! It's not all my fault!" He folded his arms and pouted.

Gaunt blinks a little and he shakes his head as he rubbed the bridge of his nose. So was that what it was all about? Ian and Prince conspired to try to get Gaunt and Serenity in some romance. He shakes his head and he slowly slips into his seat. "Look. I appreciate you wanting me and Serenity to go out on a date or something, but these things take time. Me and Serenity have to get to know each other first, to see if we would actually be good together."

"But that sounds so BORING!" The Prince huffed, his arms tightening over his chest and trying to look sulky and pouty. And doing a very good job, but it didn't seem to be helping Gaunt change his mind on how things are supposed to go.

Ian licked some ice cream from his thumb and looked up at Gaunt innocently.

"I didn't tell him to throw the ice cream," he pointed out. "Besides, I think it's a good idea. I'm gonna be little forever and Mom's never gonna die so she's gonna need someone to help take care of me 'ventually!"

He plucked a sprinkle from his sundae. "And besides that," he added, "you already know lots about Mom, we just don't know a lot 'bout you.

He paused. "What's dating, anyways?" he asked, figuring it might be a good idea to find out. He knew that sometimes it led to being together a lot, or even sometimes forever, but other than that ...
PostPosted: Sun Jan 11, 2009 8:01 pm

Gaunt blinked. He really coudln't wrap his head around what Ian was saying. Serenity woudln't die and Ian would never grow up? But Serenity told him that she had gotten the size of a 16-17 year old in just two years. It didn't make an ounce of sense.

Aside from that, though, was Ian was suddenly talking like he was older. He really hadn't expected that kind of talk from him. He shakes his head and he shrugs a little as he starts to idly pick at his butterscotch ice cream. "Well, if Serenity wants to know about me, then she can ask me when she gets back." He shrugs and he smiles a little. "And dating is.. to me, the process of a man getting to know a woman, and a woman getting to know a man. Getting to know each other with the goal of trying to decide if they want to be together for the rest of their lives." He shrugs and he scratches his chin, trying to decide to what extent he wanted to spell things out. "Though dating means different things to different people."

Prince didn't follow the conversation, and he didn't seem to want to. He was setting into the ice cream, making happy little noises as he munched on the sweet dish.

"Oh," Ian smiled. "Okay."

He munched a bit on his ice cream, thinking over what he had been told. If dating meant getting to know someone, then he definitely wanted his mom to date Gaunt. If they ended up together he might eventually gain a father, but if not then at least they would be friends, right?

"You going to get to know my Mom?" he asked Gaunt curiously. "Because I can tell, she wants to get to know you better. If she didn't she wouldn't talk to you."
PostPosted: Sun Jan 11, 2009 8:14 pm

This conversation was making his mind go in a million different directions. Could a Second and a human actually work? And he was a perfectly healthy young man! He didn't know if a second needed and wanted the same things. And this conversation was just making it apparent that he didn't know nearly as much as he would have liked.

He nods and he smiles, merely picking at the ice cream still as he waited for Serenity to come back. "Mmn. So yeah, I guess today and maybe a couple more meetings that we'll get to know each other to see if we want to start dating. Usually it'll take several months to years for two people who are dating to decide if they want to get married." And if Serenity got this big in just a couple years, what would she be like in a couple more? Would she end up looking like some 40-something cougar dating a young man? Oh dear, what in the world was he getting himself in to?!

Ian blinked up at Gaunt. "Are you okay?" he asked. "You look funny."

He wasn't sure why, but Gaunt looked almost as if he were sort of panicking ... why would that be? Of course, poor Ian had no idea what torments he was putting the man through, he was just enjoying his ice cream and the conversation while he waited for his mom to come back.

Serenity meanwhile was just finishing up in the bathroom. She had always hated those public bathrooms with the stalls, but at least this time she was just washing up. She still couldn't believe the Prince had thrown the ice cream at her on purpose ... why would he do such a thing? She had thought that he liked her well enough ... was he being mean? Had she done something to offend him?

Perhaps she would have to apologize to him before she did anything else. Gaunt had been so kind, even to pay for her and Ian's ice creams ... and she had gone and offended his little boy. It was simply unacceptable.

It was with this thought in mind that she finally left the bathroom, her neck cold but now clean, and headed back towards the booth and the people she had left behind.
