Silverbirch was quickly taking a great liking to Darkwood. The mist chuckled along with the deep woods, before settling down to a grin, beaks apart. At his explanation her beaks clicked shut, and she took on a contemplative look, as if remembering something.
"So that's what he were referring to earlier? Then? When he mentioned serpe?" she asked, glancing at the feathery companion. It started making sense now. For a moment she felt sorry for the parus, having to live life in constant fear of being poisoned. Silverbirch frowned, not taking her eyes off Dork.
The scout straightened up and looked around them. For a brief moment, a nasty gleam shone in her eyes, but returned to their usual dreaminess a split second later. A small group of fledglings were looking their way, and she waved a wing at them.
“More?”
Feathers looked down at his feet and peered at the what remained of the pile. Two nuts, one smaller than the other.
"Two more," he said, 'correcting' the parus.

“… ah, yes. He was saying the food had poison. Sorry about that.” The fledgling’s feathers rose and settled in dismissive shrug but he did look slightly embarrassed. “Dork can be a little bothersome sometimes…” he followed the female stare. “Are you… looking for someone?”
It occurred to the young deep woods that perhaps the female had business at the enclave or was just paying a visit to someone – who obviously wasn’t him. Either way, the fledgling wondered briefly if he was getting in the scout’s way.
“Too more? Never too more. Too less, too little. Never too more.” the parus said with confidence “stealing” another berry as his master eyed him with a confused stare (one that he had grown accustomed to considering he spent more than half his time trying to figure out the silly companion’s words and actions). Dork however also noticed the adult sentinel’s shift in attention and took it as if the female was searching for danger – the only plausible explanation that managed to penetrate his tiny mind.
“What, what?” he screeched as he dropped the half-eaten berry, hopping closer to the female - his fellow danger-watcher. “Danger? Dangeeer?”

"Dangeeer?" Silverbirch echoed absentmindedly, turning her gaze to the feathery companion before her. Her mus gave a curious squeak, sniffing the air casually. Birch caught herself then and shook her head, looking slightly embarassed (and apologetic) herself. "Oh. Ah. No. No danger, so don't you worry about that."
"Besides," she added, puffing up. "Nobody messes with Silverbirch, fastest scout in all of Noctua! I'll chase them well and good, if they even try to hurt'cha."
She winked playfully at the parus, then at Darkwood.
"As for you, Darkwood. No, I'm not waiting for any particular someone. Though I should be going soon. You know, back to work..." With that she sighed and deflated, mock sadness plastered onto the olive-dyed face.
Despite her size and profession, Silverbirch still acted like a little fledgling.

“Ah, you’re a scout! Are you really that fast?” Darkwood asked with unmeasured enthusiasm before his expression fell as he was unable to read the adult’s emotions properly. “Oh, you’ll have to leave soon…”
Dork eyed the adult suspiciously. No danger, bah! Silly big bird. There was always some danger.
“Look that way.” The small parus said hopping behind Silverbirch before quickly returning to his master’s side. “Me watch here.” But, oh! Of course he wouldn’t share the responsibility so easily. He didn’t trust the big bird to keep watch properly so he ended up flying back to the fledgling’s head to resume his 360º watch, glancing towards the area Silverbirch was supposed to be covering with a distrustful expression.
“You’re a companion, Dork. Don’t order sentinels around like that.” Darkwood said quietly wondering if the parus antics would make the adult leave even sooner than he was expecting.

"I hope so, one day!" Silverbirch said, head bobbing up and down in excitement. Just to entertain Dork, she swivelled her head around to watch for danger. However upon seeing Darkwood's disheartened expression her heart sank, and instinctively the older sentinel moved closer and reached down to preen at his tufts gently.
Just then a dark, bat-like shape swooped down from where Dork was watching. Silverbirch eyed the intruder curiously, noting with amusement the distance the thing- a chirop- landed from the group. The messenger took a quick glance at the fledgling before turning its attention to the larger adult.
"Message for Silverbirch..." it began.

Darkwood narrowed his yellow eyes with a content expression as the adult preened his eartuft, a gesture that made his little paranoid parus jump from the fledgling’s head in a fluttering mess of feathers with an indignant screech.
The affectionate gesture lifted his spirits long enough for the small fledgling to throw away any gloomy thoughts and when he spoke again, he sounded rather excited.
“It’s a messenger, look! Do you think you have a mission?!” it was, after all, rather exciting to see a fully grown adult – and a combatant at that! - getting ready for action. Dork didn’t seem to share the Darkwood's opinion, however, and was clacking his beak at the new arrival, mumbling odd sounds that closely resembled “Danger”.

"I'm not sure..." Silverbirch muttered, her eyes on the flying mammal. Truth to be told she had never been called on any mission, and the fledgling's question sent a wave of excitement through the young scout. Turning herself completely around to face the chirop, the mist straightened up, feeling important all of a sudden.
"Speak."
"The Corporal requires that you report to her immediately," came the short reply which lacked further details. Silverbirch watched as the chirop tilted its head at Dork, before turning around as if to go. However the companion lingered, as if waiting. Waiting for her.
"Ah well! Seems like I need to be elsewhere," Silverbirch exclaimed, turning to Darkwood. She reached down and gave his tufts a friendly nibble, "It's been wonderful talking to you, Darkwood. Hope to see you again soon, and you too Dork."
The mist called to Feathers and did a quick pre-flight preen. She made her way to the edge of the platform, turned and gave Darkwood a wink. Then she bowed in a playful manner before launching herself into the air. Soon a farewell hoot sounded through the air.
Goodbye!

Darkwood listened intently as the chirop gave the message, feeling slightly disappointed that it didn’t contain any exciting details.
“It was great to talk to you too, ma’… Silverbirch. Be careful.” The young deep woods said with a pleased expression as the adult preened his eartuft and took off. He moved closer to the edge of the platform. “Bye!”
Dork followed the fledgling and stood next to him as the mist disappeared in the darkness.
“Come on, Dork. Even you have to admit she was nice.” The fledgling said after a brief silence.
“Uff… maybe.” The parus grunted as he returned to the usual danger-seeking mode.
Darkwood chuckled lightly, picked up the remaining mouse and waddled towards the closest fledgling to give him the treat on Birch’s part. Not that he wasn’t tempted to eat it himself, but he’d already said he wouldn’t and going back on that decision would feel dishonest.
