That's rather inspiring Scarlet. I've been trying to think of ways of making weapons and armour from something very light and strong other than the idea of Tolkien's mythril/mithril which has been rather overused.

I don't tend to use dwarves really. At least I've not developed and area for any to live and if I add them I want them to be different from the typical type like that of Gimli (Tolkien again). I've created some different types of elf in my world that aren't exactly like your conventional sorts that we see all over the place.

From the ideas floating around on here already, I think my brain can work with them to create something much more original without copying anyone. The idea of this kind of guild is to inspire others from the ideas we all hold and share.

I started using dwarves as a background culture, but they've made their way into the forefront of my plot. But then, how can you resist dwarves who wear kilts, drink Saki, and love theater? ^_^

So they're still traditionally Scottish sounding then? ^_^'

No idea what Saki is, and they enjoy theatre? What kind of theatre?
*Is suspicious...*

I'm surprised you didn't recognise Sake Mel, even with the alternate spelling...

Anyhow, I know people obviously think of metal and metal alloys as the main material for making weapons and armour from, but I'd also consider some form of lacquer as a good option, especially as, in a fantasy world, one isn't limited by the real-world strength of it (even though it can be pretty strong stuff anyway).

Or you could even just invent a simple chemical compound (add sap of tree 'x' to powdered rock from 'y' caves) that hardens into something of a plastic-like nature... which would allow for an amazing range of end product! smile

Sorry for not knowing what Sake was either.
Did you perchance think I was stupid to not recognise a name when I've never come across it to begin with? rolleyes

Likewise, does it make me stupid for having not heard of it?
confused

Err... no Mel, I never said, or meant to imply any of that.
It's just that I know you like quite a bit of anime & usually folks who appreciate Japanese anime/ manga/ rpgs are also familiar with other aspects of Japanese culture. But maybe you aren't... I don't think I've really asked you before.

I'm familiar with certain aspects of Japanese culture, but not every area.

Anyhow, let's get back on topic. smile

Rice wine, served warm, has a minimal hangover (compared to some western hard liqueur), so it's the best thing for a bunch of busy miners and smiths who need to be digging or pounding anvils the next morning. ^_^

My elves, by contrast, are blessed with super livers--especially the Frost Elves--so they can consume copious amounts of the cheapest vodka and barely have a headache the next morning. Their weakness? they are very sensitive to caustic chemicals, like the lye in wood ash.

My Frost Elves usually make weapons out of woolly rhino horn and mammoth tusks reinforced with strong magic. They're elves, they can't help but put magic in EVERYTHING...which makes them ludicrously easy to track.

The Winter of the World trilogy by Michael Scott Rohan is fairly 'high-fantasy', but instead of featuring spell-slinging wizards, all the magic used by mortals is manipulated in the form of having been imbued in an item by a smith... if I recall correctly, the first item made by the main character was a sword that commands the admiration/ obediance of all who look upon the wielder.
The descriptions of the creation process for each item are fascinating to read and the story feels kinda 'traditional European' without using fairies or the Matter of Britain... it's one of my favourites smile

My story has 2 rather mystic ores, and so far I've only named one: Stormstone. It's like mythril or titanium or platneum. The raw ore is gunmetal blue and as it's refined, it becomes smoky silver. Dragon fire is the only thing that's hot enough to melt the ore, and like adamantium it can't be re-forged or recycled. It is worked exclusively by the Northern Dwarves, and can hold some magical charge.

The other one I don't have a name for, but it's worked exclusively by the Southern Dwarves. While it's not as durable as Stormstone, it is like a magical super-battery; a thimble can hold enough magical power to create a typhoon! ^_^

I agree with Mel, it's pretty cool what you have done. I can't wait to see it on a movie or read it on a book.

So Frost Elves, huh? That sounds quite intriguing. None of my elves are comfortable in the cold. Well, there are some exceptions but that's classified information, he-he. wink

Gee, there's so much I don't know about when someone mentions something like Winter of the World. No idea what that was!

thank you! My goal is to submit my manuscript to an editor by the end of the year. ^_^

Dwarves and Elves aside, my story is actually more about goblins and humans. My goblins are mathematical geniuses. Math was always my weakness, so I thought it'd be interesting if my villainous race was skilled at calculus. mrgreen

Good luck. smile

I wanted to do the same thing with mine "by the end of the year" and that was about two or three years ago now. I'm such a perfectionist that I keep altering things and have been snapped at by my writing course tutor for it, saying that I should write a chapter list and WRITE rather than continuously changing it. His tone of voice in the e-mail he sent me came across as very "WHOA!" to me. I've done that first chapter list, but my mind is already coming up with alterations that will take place - though following the general list more closely - which is ok.

*Sigh.* My goal is to be published before or by the time I am 25, and I'll be 23 this August 4th. -_-'

Yer welcome Scarlet! I also wish you the best of luck in getting it published.

Hmm, you got something original going there. I think some people wouldn't like having smart goblins around. I mean, you usually hear them doing stupid things and just being pawns/soldiers in someone's army but, to have them being leaders, or wizards is something that's never heard of. Well, I have heard of a goblin wizard but, I'm not sure if I'm remembering that right or what. That goblin is from Magic The Gathering though...
I would have never expected a goblin to be good at calculus. That's fer darn sure! mrgreen
I did come up with a goblin leader myself but I'm not sure if I ended up modifying the idea or what... rolleyes

Best of luck to you to Mel! I hope you get to publish yer stuff soon. 3nodding

Ah, you've not succumbed to reading or watching any Harry Potter then? Goblins run all the banks in the Potterverse!

That's funny, I don't recall seeing any goblins in any of the movies. I do recall the goblet of fire but, that's not a cousin of the goblins, is it? lol

Like I said before, the stupid goblins is a notion that was popular before HP. I suppose that's bound to change, huh?
