Rainbow Sherbert was indeed very pleased when the conversation of family just seemed to trail off. Part of her was aching inside to talk about it, part of her couldn't stand to say another word. She didn't have a good family and she knew it, but it hurt to open admit it.
"Really? You don't? So hypothetically you could have seen a band of purple buffalo singing a song to the heavens while flying and you wouldn't have even noticed?" She giggled with delight, utterly amused that Owen didn't seem so enthused with what the world held. She'd have to teach him one day, that even the smallest of bugs held a wonderful story waiting to be told, she'd have to teach him that the world wasn't played out like a perfect story, that there was so much else going on in the background.

Maybe she'd introduce him to her imaginary world? Would he think she was crazy? Oh, boy she hoped not! Owen seemed like an amazing stallion, she felt lucky to have met him.

"Yay! I'm glad you think so, I haven't really raced anyone either!!" Bertie grinned at the wink and nudged him slightly. "On your mark, get set-!" She took off running as fast as she could, calling back to him, "GO!!!!!!!"

The black stallion wasn't at all ready when she suddenly darted off even before yelling go. When his brain finally registered what had happened, he took off after her. His legs pumped as fast as they could and he was beginning to regain the ground he had lost. She wasn't as far ahead of him as he thought she would be and it wasn't long until they were pretty close to being side by side. She was still ahead of him and he imagined that she probably ran alot more than he did. His legs were beginning to burn and he wasn't sure if he would last all that long, but if she wanted to race he was going to try his best to give her a good one alright.
"Better pick up your pace! I am gaining on you!" he called to her in jest and with a grin on his face.

Bertie was more than pleased with herself for taking off well before him. It was the perfect maneuver, it got your opponent every time! She knew she wasn't the tallest mare, so her legs were pretty short...and slender, so she needed that extra time she allowed herself.
Not daring to look back the white tiny mare just kept right on running, her mind racing to figure out just how far behind her was Owen. What if he got hurt and didn't call out for help? She'd never know! What if he was slow, and she didn't know that either, so know she was miles ahead of him. What if he was right on her tail!! UGH! It was killing her not looking back to see, but she knew she couldn't. Looking back could give up the lead, or make her ram right into a tree.

And that wouldn't be very pleasant.

But not seconds after, she heard him. Only his voice though, which seemed close, she was too focused on herself to listen to his hoofsteps. "I doubt that!!" She yelled back playfully, still unaware of his whereabouts. UGH it really was killing her.

Owen was more of a stockier stallion and hadn't ever really raced any one before. He really didn't even run regularly and so his legs were burning and his lungs were crying for air but he ignored them. She wanted to race and he was going to race her and try to give it his best instead of whimping out. After this though, he vowed to start running more to get more in shape than he was now.
He wasn't too far behind her now but he wasn't gaining anymore ground on her either. He was just trying to keep up with her and keep her in sight as much as he possibly could. He tried pumping his legs faster but it was not doing anything for him and so he decided just to focus on keeping her in his sights. When her words floated back to him, he could have chuckled if he had the breath cause she was pretty much right. He really wasn't gaining anything on her. "Your...pretty....much....right..." he tried to yell out to her but didn't think she could hear him with all the gasping he was doing.
