It took him a moment to register the first thing he'd said. He shook his head and half sat up. "Wait wait, hold on. Did you just say you'd already found your lifemate? And you're NOT with her? Just what part of this makes sense? I thought the whole purpose of it all was to find her, the other part of your soul, and stay with her. What? Did she refuse? Isn't that....kinda corrupt of her? I mean, two halves of one soul blah blah blah and all that. Is she around here and that's why you haven't been looking?"
Yep, he was confused. And appearantly a bit outraged at the idea of a LIFEMATE not being..... lifemate-y.

Nick couldn't help but laugh at Nori's confusion, amusing as it was in the situation. It didn't last long, though, before it died away, and he was back to a sorta sad, brooding state. "No, no...I've not exactly been refused, persay, just the one I'm to be with hasn't realized the truth yet..." He closed his eyes, voice dropping to just louder than a whisper, "I can't bear to tell them for fear of what it might do. A Carpathian male puts his mate's happiness above his own, and I cannot bear to cause any more pain to the my soul mate....and I never said he was a 'she'."

He was going to say something when that last part hit him. He abruptly shut his mouth and stared at him. After a moment he shook himself out of it. "Oh. Sorry, I kinda...figured....I thought you liked females." He shrugged. "A-anyway... it's up to you. He's your mate. Don't see why going up to him and telling him would hurt." He lay back down. "I don't know. I guess since you know where he is you're not in danger of losing him..."
Idly he wondered what his mate would be like.

"But I AM very much in danger of losing him." Nick closed his eyes, realizing he might as well spit out the truth, beating about the bush was getting no where, by technicality, he couldn't lie to his lifemate anyways. Taking a deep breath, counting to ten and finally releasing it slowly to get his courage up, he stood up and began passing about the cave, unable to sit still any longer. "Nori...I...have to tell you the full truth, and by a technicality, I can't lie to you anyways. I know you've wondered why I have treated you so differently, I know there are days you wonder if I'm testing you and if you'll ever find out if you pass or fail. I told you before that I bought you to be a companion, and while that is true, it's not the full truth. I freed you because you're my lifemate..." He glanced at Nori, mentally wincing, and scared to hell of his reaction to the truth.

Nori now pulled an incredibly good impression of a deer in headlights where Nick was the car. After a moment a rather hysterical laughter started bubbling out of him. "Heh...heheheheh....You're incredibly cruel. Heheheh...I had you pegged as someone altogether good. You're going to try and have me believe that I...of all living things, it had to be me....I'm your lifemate. You must think I'm the weakest little cretin available for purchase." He closed his eyes and stood, teeth bared in anger. "Well, master, I'll point out one small detail you seem to have forgotten: Slaves aren't lifemates to anyone. We are purchased, we serve, we're sold, we die."
He raised his head and glared at Nick, the image actually regal and dominant. A complete 180 from his usual self. "I've had to live as a slave longer than most of us live at all. Don't feed me your bullshit. I'm not some little female who's coming out to the world. If you want me you could've just taken me without feeding me your bullshit hope. I have nothing left for you to shatter, vampire." With an actually menacing growl he turned away from him and started walking out. "I will be outside. Do what you will. Come and get me when you've decided to cut the bullshit."

Nick winced at the laughter, hurt by Nori's words since not a single one were true. It hurt more that he would believe such things, but after all he'd been through, it was also the exact kind of reaction he thought would happen...it was either this or Nor'd bolt. Mentally, his subconcious chuckled and added to his pain You have been telling him to speak his mind...looks like you got your wish. Seems with one single truth, he'd shattered all the trust he'd ever been able to engender from Nori.
He stood there watching Nori leave, unable to conceal the pained, hurt look on his face, and remained there for quite sometime. Finally, unable to bear the silence and loneliness any longer, he stepped out of the cave and leapt into the air, taking the form of a owl and winging his way into the sky. He had no real place to go, and merely flew about waiting for dawn to arrive. He knew it best that for now, he'd not return. He'd never remain far away, but he couldn't bear to face his anger face-to-face right now, at least till he'd done some thinking of his own.

Nori huffed off away from the cave, too angry to speak. He didn't even care if the vampire decided to beat him an inch from his life. Hell, the vampire could beat him to DEATH for all he cared. He was not going to be ******** with on a mental level. One too many of his masters had done so already to allow yet another. He growled angrily as he stalked through the trees, uncaring of direction. He needed to vent...to calm down. A tree ended up suffering, Nori's claws going deep, ripping a good chunk of wood out. He remained within the vicinity of the cave, figuring Nick would give him an hour or two to calm himself or maybe think of something else, then come for him.

But Nick never came, at least not in the sense that Nori was waiting for. Instead he remained aloft, watching the sky and seeing it start to lighten. His time was short now, and he debated what he should do. Seeing no real good answer, and since going back to the cave was now out of the question, his only choice was to sleep in the earth. Twelve hours should give them enough time to calm down and him to think of something, right?
He wheeled around on a updraft seeking Nori's mind, wanting to see if there was any chance of them talking before his lethargy took him over, but the depth of the other's anger made him wince again. No chance in hell was Nori going to be open to any sort of conversation, so Nick turned and flew back towards the cave, alighting upon the ground about twenty feet from the entrance even as he shifted to human form. Opening the earth, he lay down and close his eyes before closing himself off from the world for the day....it'd been one hell of a night.

It took Nori all of 30 seconds once dawn was breaking to figure Nick wasn't going to come and fetch him. Not now at least. He growled again and returned to the cave. He was all ready to ignore Nick and sleep for a bit when he noted there was no one with him in the cave. Was Nick still out there? But he couldn't go out in the sun... Had he moved caves and left him here stranded. More likely but probably not. He'd gone through too much trouble over Nori as it was. The slave bit his lower lip as actual worry set in. He returned to the mouth of the cave and tried catching his scent, only to find that it disappeared on the wind. Just where the hell had that vampire gone? He sighed and decided to look around, checking every dark place he could find.
By mid-day he was running, searching frantically.
By mid-afternoon he was almost in hysterics, calling out for his master as he ran about without even giving the slightest care to whether there was danger around him or not. The vampire was nowhere to be found. Had he actually burnt up in the light of the sun?
He wouldn't have.
And leave him stranded here?
He couldn't have.
WHERE WAS HE?
"NIIIIICK!!!"

It was late afternoon, somewhere not far from twilight before Nick awoke, removed the earth and once more made his appearance in lion form. He felt uneasy, as if something was wrong, and it took him a moment to realize his name was being called in a VERY hysterical voice...or one darn near it. Using his mind, to better locate where Nori was, he ran until he was nearly run over by the other in his haste. "NORI!! Nori!! Calm down! What's wrong?' Nick tried to cast about to see if there was someone else in this area that might cause his usually quiet soul mate such anguish but couldn't find anyone, even though the commotion he was making should of brought every vampire in a 20 mile radius.

Aversion to touch be damned. He grabbed Nick, pulling him down, and shoved his face against his neck with a sob. The sobbing was all he could manage for a moment as his body calmed, shaking from the entire day's ordeal. The moment he could speak Nick might've regretted any thoughts of happiness at being so close. He might be a nearly invincible Carpathian, but claws still hurt. And Nori dug them in hard, anchoring Nick down so he couldn't get away from this. There was righteous anger on his face as he drew his head up to look at him. "I THOUGHT YOU WERE DEAD, YOU b*****d!!! HOW THE HELL COULD YOU DO THAT TO ME?!?!"

Nick at first was shocked at Nori's initial reaction and first wrapped his arms around him instinctively to comfort, but any happy thoughts vanished as soon as they appeared with the claws in his back. He dropped his hands, laying limp under Nori, his anger appearing for the first time and though his eyes narrowed slightly, he did his best to keep his voice calm. "Look, I'm sorry, but I got the impression you didn't want me around anymore....after all, I'm a cruel, heartless vampire, right? You told me to cut the crap, but I HAVE NO CRAP TO CUT. If I was truly the monster you see me as, then I'd of already done alot worse than merely set you free and try to make you happy. I've tried to do the best thing by you, but obviously whatever the hell I do is wrong. What do you want me to do, Nori? Huh? Just say the word, and I'll be out of your life forever in the morning's light."

Nick thought he wanted him dead? Why the hell would he think that? He frowned. "You're my master, why would I want you dead?" He pulled away from him, ears drooping so that his flakes dragged on the floor. "I'm yours... why would you abandon me? Why would you feed me hope when there's nothing but the stark black void ahead? You ARE cruel...but you're my master." He dropped to the floor, laying there like an offering on an altar. "Do what you will. Punish me, don't punish me, hate me, don't hate me. Just...don't abandon me?" Bright teal eyes looked up at him, begging.

Nick just closed his eyes and for a time didn't reply. It seems he couldn't win, no matter what the hell he did, he was cruel for doing it. "I left because I thought that would make you happy, since having me around wasn't working...but I'd never truly abandon you." The anger was gone from his voice, it was more a sense of resignment. "There is always the option of helping you find another master. One less boring that I am to you....granted, there is the fact they won't love you as I do, but maybe you'd find life with them more bearable." While it WAS true the option was open, there was no way Nick could ever follow through with it, but he would do his best if that was what Nori wanted.

"Why would it make me happy, when I asked you to come get me?" He pulled himself up once more and looked up at him with his head bowed. "If you wish to be rid of me then so be it, but don't throw useless words like love around... No such thing exists..." He drew up his left foreleg, the one covered mostly in bandages. He deftly unbound the bandaging and revealed what it hid away. Along the outer side of his arm was a continuation of the symbols that started at his shoulder. One could already guess that someone had held Nori down as they'd carved into him with god-knows what, then later burned the markings in so that the wounds were literally carved in and hadn't healed depth-wise. His arm had been treated like it was wood of some sort.
Lower down, still along the outer side, just above his wrist, lay a huge blotch of a scar that had obviously once been a burn. The burn actually extended up to the back of Nori's paw, but had been hidden beneath the bandages.
Along the inside of his wrist and all along the inner part of his arm lay countless, hair-thin scars. Proof of how many times Nori had once tried to take his own life.
"The love you speak of never existed in this world, Nick. The only things that are understood are lust, power, and greed. What sort of warped sense of love drives someone to do this to another?"
