Morrow laughed bitterly in response to Lumi's question. "No, I suppose not. You're right -- nothing is entirely safe. You can get hurt anywhere." His wings shifted a bit restlessly against his back as he looked past Lumi, though his gaze was not on the forest, but seemed to look well beyond it, as if he was visualizing what lay in the far distance.

His gaze didn't quite return to the here and now, but one ear curved towards Lumi as she continued, a sign that he was listening. There was something in her voice... But why should he press? He'd asked a question and gotten an answer. It was what he wanted, right? Just keep the conversation going until she got tired of him, or had to leave, or whatever you did in situations like these when a stranger stumbles across you in the middle of nowhere and you don't know what else to do and, strangely, you didn't realize how bored you were until you're not anymore. Not that Morrow's thoughts consciously followed that pattern, but the realization was there -- Lumi was anything but boring. He dipped his head a little in agreement with her, cream-colored bangs falling into his eyes. "I suppose that's what happens when you leave the thicket. Nothing wrong with it, though."

Lumi lowered her head with a vague look on it, "no... That's only to be expected..."
Lumi suddenly smiled a happy little smirk, her nose scrunched up and she couldn't help but giggle, her eyes squinted slightly and her hair tingled and vibrated around her body. She'd been thinking too much about the sad things in her life, the sad realities, the sad truths, the sad and terrible mistakes, and the sad fact that she would never be able to fix any of them. Her guardian, if she'd wanted to say anything at that moment, would have told her that what happened next was only with in human nature. But she wasn't human, and this wasn't with in her nature. She was one that was suppoused to be clear headed and proper at all times, it made her look royal, as if she couldn't be bothered by the real world. She'd almost fooled herself into beleiving it as the truth.
But the REAL truth was she wasn't in the cities, the towns, or near the fires becuase she wanted, no NEEDED to be alone with her thoughts. She needed to cry, she missed her family, she missed her freinds, she didn't like being alone, not really, she never liked being alone... but when that was all you knew... what else was she to do?
Lumi sniffld audibly as her body betrayed her and the tears burst forth from her eyes, rolling down in streams, and dripping from her nose. She didn't know this male, not truly, not enought to expect any form of comfort. That was rude, and she wouldn't be rude, not now... not at her lowest point.
So like the inner child she really was and would always be, she turned tail and ran through the woods, the trees blurred by her still flowing tears.

Morrow was, frankly, a little confused. Not that Herla running away from him crying was a completely unprecedented event... He usually didn't go out of his way to cause it, but most of the time he at least had an idea of what he'd said that was wrong. This time, he had actually been making an effort to not say anything especially obnoxious or mean. He put his ears back in annoyance and stared after where Lumi had disappeared to... If she was inclined to be so easily offended, he was half-tempted to just let her run off on her own.

But at the same time -- maybe it hadn't even been him? It could have been something else. Hell, maybe her Guardian had said something mean to her -- Morrow had heard that Guardians were supposed to be helpful, but then again, he wouldn't know. And in her state and the darkness, if she got lost in the woods or stumbled into a bad stretch of mountain path... Well, Morrow didn't want to have to do the cleanup afterwards. So with a sigh, he set off after her.

Lumi continued her teary eyed trek as she managed to not run into any trees, although by the time she beleived herself to have been a far enough distance away from the rest of the world, her body was tired, bloody and bady bruised. She'd realised, only too late, that she had wandered into the untraveled center of the woods, the underbrush here was unruly and clutched at her fur as she ran. She shuddered as the sobs racked her body. This time of year had always been her family's favorite, she could stil remember her father playing with them and telling them stories far past their bed times... Later on, her father had become MIA and so Lumi had taken up that job. She still loved it, becuase she had the the audience of her awe inspired siblings... but now... what did she have? her pride?
Lumi let out a shakey "HA!" as she leaned against a tree. She looked at her cuts, the black easy to see against her light fur, even in the dark in the heavilly wooded area. She sighed in releif, despite the blood the wounds were realy just scratches.
Lumi raised her head and looked around, tears still flowing down her face. She missed her family, she wanted them now more than ever. Her ears went flat against her head as she remembered a line from a story her mother had once told her, about a lost little duckling. She felt the tears trickle down her face again as she whispered out rather pathetically-
"I'm lost."

Bloody females... So unpredictable. Then again, that's what made life interesting, right? Morrow, regardless, grumbled under his breath as he cantered after Lumi. Even in the relative dark her tracks were easy to follow -- she hadn't exactly been trying to be stealthy or cover her trail. Hooves easily found footing on ground he'd trekked a thousand times before. He was forced to slow down as he entered the less-traveled parts of the woods, thorns and vines grabbing at his wings and flanks, but to some extent his thick fur protected him from all but the worst of it. Still, he was looking the worse for wear by the time he caught up.

There she was, up ahead. Morrow paused at what seemed a safe distance, and drew a breath, careful to make enough noise that his words wouldn't startle her. "Lumi," he said almost stiffly, not used to having to say things like this, "I am aware I'm not the most socially graceful of Herla. If I offended you -- I would apologize, but frankly, I don't know what I'm apologizing for, and there's not much point in that." A pause, and he stepped a bit closer. "You're free to hate me if you like, but I meant what I said about the forest being dangerous. At least let me guide you back home."

Lumi shook her had and mentally cursed herself for being so easy to find, She smiled at the realization that shaking her head had also shaken off most of the tears. Hopefully leaving her eyes nice and dry. She sighed, feeling guilty becuase Morrow was right, he didn't have anything to apologise for, but it was sweet of him for doing so. Lumi turned her head and gave a weak smile.
"I am kind of lost...." She said, turning the rest of her body to face him "But, don't worry... It's not your fault. This may be a New year, but the troubles are all the same."

"Isn't that always the way of things," murmured Morrow, half to himself. No matter how many New Years went by, the past never truly faded away. It was one's memories, after all, that shaped how they were in the present day -- aspirations and fears, triumphs and tragedies.

...and yet, who you were in the past could have no bearing at all on who you are in the present. A paradox -- but the mountain buck wasn't in the mood for further philosophical musing.

With a tilt of his head and a flip of a wing, he gestured for Lumi to follow him. The safest path home would be a bit of a trip away, but Morrow was confident in his own sense of direction, and he doubted anything else would pose a significant obstacle. And after Lumi was safely home -- well, he'd be free to return to his own garden, in the winter silence.
