"I'm training to be a warrior, just like my dad and older brothers and sisters. They fought against the rebels in the war," Makaa replied proudly. He wanted to be a great fighter, like his family. It was obvious strength ran in his family, but apparently it also rested in his heart. Makaa had no idea that very soon the pride he cherished would fall apart. He would understand, but it meant he would never be a warrior for the traditions as he thought. But, within him, the fire of Finar si burned and would burn on through him. "But I don't like hugs," he shot back, frowning.

Ahh, he was still training. She didn't feel quite so behind if that was the case. "Momma told us all about the war. She fought too. That's how she lost her eye, I think. Some other cubs said it makes her look scary, but I don't think so." She'd been in love with that worn, scarred face ever since she'd been old enough to see it.
"What?! You don't like hugs? Why not? They're nice and warm, and when you get one it should make you happy!" Zap insisted. The idea of someone not liking hugs just because they didn't like them was absurd to her.

Makaa tilted his head thoughtfully. "Really? My father lost his eye in the war, too," he said and then rolled his eyes when she exclaimed about his displeasure over hugs. "I just don't like them, that's all. They're too... I just don't," he replied, the last part somewhat snapped. He seriously didn't have a reason he didn't like hugs, they weren't cool, he guessed.

Zap nodded. "Well I think it's silly not to like them." Still, she wasn't a cub that liked to fight, and so she let the issue drop.
"Anyways...You were hunting, right? Maybe I could help you find something, to make up for what you lost?" She poked her nose into one of the assorted little holes in the sand, likely the entrance to a mouse's den or something. "What was it you were after anyway?"

Makaa glared at her. He was NEVER silly. But she dropped it, so he figured he'd let it go, too. It was a stupid debate, anyways. "I WAS hunting a lizard for practice, but it's gone now so it doesn't matter. I was going to go exploring after anyways," he added with a shrug and stood. There were several rock outcroppings that he'd seen in his morning explorations, but he hadn't actually explored them, so maybe exploring them today was a good idea.

"Ohhh, exploring?" Zap really hadn't been far from her den yet. It sounded exciting though, especially with a friend to lead the way and have fun with. Even if that friend seemed silly and sort of grumpy. Maybe he was just hungry. She'd have to be sure to save him something from Papan's next hunt as a replacement for the lizard.
"So where are we headed?" She asked, bouncing about eagerly. Never unwilling, she was already fired up.

Makaa looked over to her, all bouncy and excited, and sighed. "There's some rocks I know of, but haven't really explored them," he said and started walking in that direction. "I figured I'd go see what's to be seen."
And with that he headed towards the rocks, keeping a brisk pace, but looking back over his shoulder to make sure she was keeping up.

Zap had seen rocks. She knew what they were. She could tell big ones from little ones too. The memory of her mother explaining the concepts of 'big' and 'small' with rocks came easily to her mind, and made her all the more interested. Momma had said there were lots of rocks...maybe once some time, Momma had been at these rocks!
She bobbled along after Makaa, managing to wander about curiously and yet somehow keep up. Compared to his single-minded strut, her wandering lope was humorous, just one of the many differences the two would come to find they had.

Makaa couldn't believe her, really, and that silly bouncing around. So he mostly ignored her until they got to the rocks. Once they did, he climbed up onto the smallest one and then hopped to the next. It was a roughly circular cluster of boulders of various sizes and shapes, perfect for climbing and hiding things in the crevices. It was one of these crevices that caught his attention. The cub blinked down at the strange thing and carefully climbed down. "Hey, Zapa, have you seen this before?" he asked, staring down the small cluster of brownish-green and strange little dark blue things. The blue things were pointy at the ends, but they looked... soft.

Zap busied herself finding a way up onto the taller rocks, once they had arrived, and so she didn't notice at first when Makaa found something interesting. She'd just managed to get up onto a sort of ledge when he called her, and she looked over her shoulder at him with a "Hmm? What is it?"
Realizing she'd have to get down to see, she sighed and tried to keep in her head how she'd gotten up there to start. "Let me see." She nudges her nose past Makaa's and peered at the odd thing. "I dunno...It smells nice though! And it's pretty! Like some of the night-sky fell down! Do you think that's it?"

"Maybe... But look, it's attached to that grass..." Makaa replied and nudged it with a paw. The "grass" had been quite strong, but the strange addition fell off rather easily. The young lord peered down at the dislodge "piece of sky" and gently scooped it up in one paw. It looked kind of like a star, only dark blue. He'd been taught about the colors already, how blue was taboo and how red and orange were the more desirable, but he couldn't help it. He LIKED blue, especially the near-black color of the sky when he stayed late enough to see the stars come out.
But this small thing was too cute for him to keep. Beside, he was a lord of the pride. If he was caught with something blue, well, his older brothers and sisters would never let him live it down. So, instead, he turned it over in his paw and then nimbly tucked the thing with what little bit of "grass" that had broken off with it over Zapa's ear, so the "piece of sky" was open to the side of her forehead. "There," he said, satisfied by its placement. Then without another word, he turned from the strange plant and resumed climbing up the rocks.

"Mmm." Zap bent and sniffed at the grass. She sat up sharply, nose twitching and whiskers aflutter. "The sky must smell really strange...!" She ended with an abrupt sneeze, unused to the scent of flowers. She was still blinking the surprise from her eyes when she felt Makaa put something on her head. The piece of sky? Well that was sweet! He could have kept it, but he didn't! She moved to hug him again, then resisted. "Oh yeah...no hugs, right."
She too leapt back onto the rocks, though she was careful to peek between them each as she went from one to the next this time.

The corner of Makaa's mouth turned up in a small smile to himself over her not hugging him. That was considerate of her, remembering what he didn't like. He kept climbing until there wasn't any more rocks to climb up to and looked out over the sands. "Woah..." he said softly at the view. They weren't tremendously high, but high enough to see to the den sites and farther. It was quite a view, especially with the heat waves making everything look almost as if it were underwater and they were on the surface looking down.

Zap was busy looking between two stones when Makaa called. She jerked to look around and then yelped when her head stuck a moment, knocking the precious gift he'd given her from behind her ear. She watched sadly as it fluttered down down down to the ground below. Of course...her head was still stuck.
"Ah...Makaa!" She called, wiggling and scrabbling a bit. "I dropped the sky! And...I think I'm stuck!"

Makaa's attention jerked towards her when she cried out, immediately hopping into action. He leaped down to her and gently put a paw on her shoulder. "Hold still," he whispered, keeping a cool head so that she wouldn't panic any more and make this more difficult. He really had to wonder how she'd gotten herself into this predicament and made a note to keep a closer eye on her in the future. "Here, tilt your head back a bit," he instructed, lying on his stomach and slipped one paw under her nose to help push her head into a position that she SHOULD be able to get out of.
