The correct answer is 3 uses.
Possible out comes
1. Put 8 pebbles on each side and measure them if they balance the pebble is in the remaining group of 7
2. Put 3 pebbles on each side if they balance the pebble is in the remaining group of 2
3. Put a pebble on each side of the balance this will show you the lighter one.
This shows that as long as the pebble is in the group of 7 it works, because even if it is in the group of 3 you put two on one side and you will find out the answer that way.
1. Lets say the pebble is in the group of 8
2. put 3 pebbles on each side if they balance the it is in the remaining pile of 2 if they don't then they are in the lighter pile.
3. Lets say the pebble was in the group of 3 then put two on if they balance it is the remaining one if not then you have your lighter pebble
3 uses beat that ^.^
BTW: Does this mean that I get the 2k as a prize?
