"But I.. I don't know how to ride a bike." Maddy eyed the contraption with wariness. "I really, really don't. And what if I fall? What if I break my feelers or something?" She raised a protective hand to pat said feelers, trying to make sure that they were still there. They were. Phew!

But that didn't change the fact that she had no idea what to do on a bike; and Jamie's fall hadn't exactly made her want to get on one more. Sure, he seemed to have it fixed now, but you never know with those things!

"It's not too hard to learn, it just takes practice," He told her, his expression still rather expectant. "I'll help you...I'll hold the bike until you get your balance, like mom did for me. You won't break anything. I haven't." Of course, he didn't have any feelers or anything. But the worst thing he ever got was a scrape or a bruse, which healed pretty quickly and didn't feel that bad.

"Oh, here," he unclipped his helmet and held it out to her.

She put on the helmet, glad that it was one of those with stylish holes on top that didn't squash her antennae.

"Promise you won't let go, right?" She turned to him with a rather unsure expression on her face after getting on the bike, holding onto the handles with a white-knuckled grip.

"Promise," he agreed easily, fixing his grip on one side of the handle bars. He put his other hand on the bar just below her seat. That should do it. Well, it would as long as she didn't go too fast and plow him over. But he didn't think to mention that. It probably wouldn't have been a good idea anyway.

"Start peddling whenever you're ready, kay?"

She pushed her foot down on the pedal and started moving, wings fluttering madly in the breeze as they were designed to and giving her a bit of extra force, making the speed slightly faster than either of the two children had anticipated.

"Ugh!" Maddy grunted as she finally found the brake and got the bike to stop. They'd moved a little less than 20 meters, but it'd taken surprisingly little time with the speed.

"Are you okay?" She turned to the other kid, concerned. "Your legs didn't fall off or anything, right?"

Jamie had been, admittedly, shocked by her take off. He had had to run to keep up and it had been very difficult to keep the bike in balance. So when she finally shopped he nearly tripped at the change of pace. He was a fairly active boy, not not really athletic by most standards. He was a little out of breath, but unharmed.

"I'm fine," he breathed, "Wow! You sure you haven't rode a bike before?"

"Yeah!" She grinned, exhilerated and more than a little high on adrenalin.

"That was awesome! I've never.. That was awesome!!" She repeated, grinning like a fool and not caring in the least. "I guess my wings are good for something, huh?" They hadn't been so far, but this they seemed to be ideal for - she'd definitely have to talk to her mom about getting a bike after this!

Jamie smiled a little, letting go of the bike and taking a step back as he caught the rest of his breath. That had worked out pretty well, all things considered. And she wasn't complaining about possible dangers anymore...that was good!

"I knew you'd like it," he said, adding on a suggestion. "Do you want to give it a go by yourself...? I can always try running beside you if that's better." He didn't say how it was possible she'd leave him behind. That didn't seem very reassuring, if she needed the reassurance.

Maddy's face fell in horror: "Oh god, no! You promised you'd hold on to me!" Her grip on the handlebars turned desperate, knuckles becoming pale as death in her instinctual response to the thought of having to ride by herself without Jamie helping her keep her balance.

Jamie paused for a moment, his blue eyes taking a calculating look in their depths. The wheels and cogs were whirling about in his mind. So she was still afraid? But she had practically done it on her own anyway and certainly her wings helped more for balance than he did. Her reaction was a bit of a mystery to him. He decided it was best to go just with it for now, precisely because he didn't understand.

"Alright, but you need to slow down ok?" He told her with a pleasant smile, "If you out-ride me I can't hold on and keep you up!"

"Alright, I can do that. I think." She nodded determinedly, not willing to lose her support. She could just her wings still, right? It shouldn't be that hard..

"Ready again?" She smiled brilliantly, shifting through moods as fast as any pregnant woman ever could.

Well, he certainly hoped she could do it. If she didn't well...she might be going solo without either of them having a say in the matter. But of course, as always, he'd do his best to keep that from happening. He reached out the took a grip on the handle bars again. He flexed his fingers a little to make sure his hold was good enough.

"Alright, ready when you are," he nodded easily.

"Okay, here we go again!" She put the bike into motion easily; but stopping her wings from fluttering wasn't quite as easy. The motion was instinctive, and though it worked for a couple of seconds, it hadn't been more than a minute before Maddy lost focus, just giving into the enjoyment of the cold air on her face and the feeling of faux-flying.

As she did, the delicate appendages gave into instinct and started fluttering madly, giving the bike and it's rider a sudden and powerful boost in speed.

At first it wasn't so bad. He could keep up a jog, his grip staying tight against the handle bars. It even seemed like she was getting the hang of it. When her wings began to flap, however...well, it was a bit of a problem. The increase in speed forced him to run and there was only so fast that he could go on foot. While he wouldn't mind letting go, he wasn't sure how well Maddy would take it.

"Slow down, I can't keep up!" He called.

Panic set in. "I can't!" Her voice was horrified; her feet had fallen off the pedals, she couldn't get a proper grip on the brakes on the handlebars and now the bike was slinging dangerously from her lack of control. In her mind's eye, she saw how this whole thing was going to play out in a few seconds - and she'd promised Mom not to get dirty today, too, damnit and -

She crashed. There was only so much one boy could do against the weight of a whole bike and another kid. Maddy only hoped he had avoided the crash, as she lay on the ground with closed eyes and a spinning head.

At least she didn't seem to have gotten particularly damaged or anything.
