Sorry to bring an older thread back to life, but these guys are fascinating. I want them for dithers in my 29g. I saw them at PetCo but their tanks are infected with really bad ich. My lfs has them, but not all the colors. I'm gonna have to wait til I go back to work anyway so hopefully they'll get all 3 colors in by then =3

I love these little suckers I want a tank of them one day. Just make sure you don't leave the UV light on them since that stresses them. You can put it on to show them off that they GLOW pretty colors but turn it off afterwards.

All fish need certain amounts of light, you can't just have it off the whole time.

I think they meant just the black light for making them glow, if you had one of those tanks with the 2 different fixtures like some of my herp tanks have. I'm not sure why the black lights would stress them though, not saying it's not true, just never heard that before...does anyone know more about that?

ive never heard of the black light stressing them out before, i mean as long as you dont leave it on 24-7.

they are neat looking. do you think they would do ok with a betta? im doing up a new tank soon and im looking for colorful fish that could do well with betta. neon tetras seem too small

I'd say depends on the tank size and whether it's heavily planted or not. They don't really have flashy fins but you never know when you might have a betta with bad attitude. Also, does anyone know if glofish are fin nippers? If they are, keep them away from bettas.

All fish need a daily photo period, that is, time in the light.

it would either be a 10 or 20gal, but my betta has never been with other fish so im not sure. he is a cowrad though but he tries to act tough. he puffs out at me from accross the room but as soon as i get near his tank he hides so im not sure how he would act around other fish.
i could try putting him in my community 10gal if i took out my other betta and see how he does

Just make sure you do it on a day when you'll be home pretty much all day so you can watch for any fights.

I imagine that the black lights will hurt their eyes. Try staring at a black light for a while. Leaving a black light on a scorpion is harmful to the scorpion.
Also black lights heat up the water too much.

How much have yall seen these for sale? I have some in the shops i work for selling for $7.99 each. We just have the electric greens, and the starfire reds. The orange ones never sold well. I always got a kick out of the sticker they stick on the fish bag stating these fish are patented and breeding is prohibited blah blah blah. One time back when they were still farely new, people were saying the fish were sterile. Well we sold all the glofish and 3 days later we noticed lil babies in the empty tank. eek Fun times. 4laugh

If blacklight is harmfull, it makes me wonder about LED lights.

I've never seen these pretties for sale anywhere yet. I've only seen them in the tanks of the biology faculty at my university.
Sadly I belong to a different faculty so I rarely come there and I'd have to ask permission to go inside.

7.99 is a lot for a danio though :/

They've started selling them at PetSmart within the past few months. $4.99 each. If you put a blacklight in the room instead of directly on the tank it shouldn't bother them. You're not supposed to leave them on for long periods of time anyway because they're a fire hazard. They get too hot. I have one in my room and I only use it for dance parties! Woooo!

I want a group of 2 of each color plus two regular zebra danios. Double that number if I had more space.

it used tbe hard to find them but all of a sudden in the past 3 weeks i see them everywhere now. and of course all the green ones are already sold.
