The point of Kite being so obscure was so that you could take him into your own hands, though. You were supposed to create your "Kite", and that would make him more personal and easier to associate with. I kinda liked that, actually. ^^; Characters in general were more obscure in the first .hack games, and that made it kind of charming -- like a real MMORPG.
Haseo was more clear. We knew his name, his age, and his personality. He matured over the course of the games, yes, and I was fond of the character development. I think that for the Haseo games they tried to let you get to know the characters better, and so it lost the obscurity it had before.
I really liked both of them, but if I had to pick, I'd pick Kite. First, he's short (like me, hahahahaha *cough*), and second, he's a total sweetie. ^___^ Though Haseo's butt-ribbon was a nice charm-point~

i needed the butt protection as Kite lol, with dual guns butt plates are just for design cause you blow anyone else to hell!

I wonder if Haseo was able to design his own character when job-extending. Xth form seemed a little risque. Would a guy really want to look like that on an mmo?

Zelkova designed it lol, cause Zelkova wanted to see what he'd look like with the open belly button, and butt plates to make sure no one but him had access
