Well, if the little fishes swam so easily into his gently smiling jaws, could the crocodile really be blamed? It was, after all, only his nature to smile in such a way.
"Oh, that's quite cold, actually. The say it's better to have loved and lost than to have never loved, you know."
Okay so perhaps that was a bit dramatic, but he never really lied, he never made promises he didn’t' intend to keep. He didn't have to; he found smiling was all it took.
'Oh, well, I suppose I should be flattered. Wailing, really?' is what he would have said if he spoke like that. Instead he went with, "That is really quite regretful."
Ah, but that. Yes, he'd never really felt bad about it before, but their responses were quite dramatic. He didn't know who this Banji was, but he must have been a kindred spirit to evoke such a response.
"I am sorry if my many charms cause them pain, but I'm afraid it was just the way I was born. You could almost call it a curse, really. I never meant to hurt them, you see."

"He might be right about that," Gzifa said.
"He makes a good point," Kirala agreed.
Mto, still, was not convinced. At all. "I don't buy any of that. I'm sure you've got some unresolved issues of your own making it so you don't play nice with others. Or at least, don't work well with them after the playing is done. What is it, Heimdal? Mother issues?" Why couldn't she have just been a normal seer and see death and destruction and cub slaughter and all that stuff? "I could probably say the same about you, if I just so happened to crush you again."
Maybe she'd pounce him again after all and just not mean to do any damage.
"I told you already to stop with your bullshit. Everything you say only makes me more convinced you're some scared little cub on the inside in every way minus your sex drive."

"Yes, I can see you girls understand what I'm trying to say."
Good, perhaps not the agreement he was going for but he'd take it. Some backup was better than none. Anyway, it's not like he only broke hearts, he also made some lives very, very complete.
"Mother issues? I'm afraid I don't know what you mean." Actually he did, he just didn't have mother issues. It was such a typical response from a woman though, they liked to think that every single thing in the world revolved around them. He was fine with that, though, he could use it to his advantage.
"Please don't crush me again, I'm afraid my lungs would never recover. And I am touched that you are taking such an interest in my sex life. Do you have a caregiver complex you'd like to tell me about?"
He really was pushing it, even the sugary sweet tone couldn't hide how much further he was taking it than he should.

By this point, Cricket and Kirala both knew to shut the hell up. The only noise they made was breathing, their only movement that and to look from one lion to the other. This wasn't going anywhere good.
Mto scowled. Stupid men. Always liked to think they knew everything. "No, I can assure you 'care' is the last word I'd use to describe my feelings for you." She unfortunately couldn't manage some sarcastic sweet girl voice, but man, she was good at keeping cool.
--Better than you'd expect kind of good, that is.

"I'm wounded," he said, genuinely.
He was; he didn't think his lungs would ever be the same. At least he'd always remember this, unfortunately. He'd had a few other scars and things that reminded him of pleasant afternoons with arguably nice ladies, but this one, this one he didn't think he'd value.
Shame she didn't have a caregiver complex, it would have gone nice with his imaginary mother issues.
Hah.
"Alright well then," he said, standing up slightly less gracefully than he normally would, "Since my lunch was interrupted it looks like I'm going to have to find something else. Of course," he thought for a moment, "If you're also hungry you ladies could join me."
Mto was a big lioness and, he knew from experience, a good tackler. She'd probably be a damn good hunter too, and it would certainly make his time of it easier. Ah, a good plan come to fruition, prides be damned.

Gzifa only shrugged when Mto's eyes carried over her shoulder to focus on her. She watched the lioness walk behind her and snatch the hare, who squealed out of instinct in response.
"I'll bring something back," Mto muffled around the smaller body. She left then, to return a little while later, hareless. Instead, she drug a young, very much dead zebra. A clean kill all things considered. Good hunter? Apparently so. Maybe she couldn't find her name, but this she could do.
She panted a little. The corpse was spared from further dragging, left in front of Gzifa who wasted no time in digging in, literally. She liked to claw the rib parts open and Mto had only gotten the neck.
The lioness ate nothing herself. Instead, she growled a warning at Heimdal, that said without saying: Don't come near this. You can't have it.
She lay down, looking rather relaxed. Almost too relaxed. Then, with all the sarcasm in the world, "So tell me about your mother."
Heimdal wasn't the only one would could be a smartass.

That had gone less well than he would have liked, and a good deal stranger.
The girl had tromped off on her own, leaving him for a very strange while with the wild dog, and what kind of conversation did you have with one of those? And then she'd returned, quite successfully, and denied him food.
Not like he would have eaten it. Now, if he'd pretended to help out, fine, but eating a strangers food was ill advised, as far as he was concerned.
Ah, yes, figured. Crazy female.
"She was a saint. Tell me about yours," he said finally, lifting one of his brows in a challenge.

"Also a saint."
Gzifa was ignorant to the situation. Didn't surprise Mto any. She had managed to rip a limb off and dropped the leg between the two, intentionally closer to Heimdal. "Here you go. You can eat what's left of this. We have to go."
"We--"
"If we don't go, you won't find Banji. Is he really worse than Banji?"
Mto was a stubborn lioness but she took that to heart. "...Alright." When Gzifa left, she followed her, but on the way out she gave Heimdal one of those looks. "This isn't over, You."
And it wasn't.
