Emi didn't respond to any of the sharp words or Tyvens cool continuation. She didn't even speak when Keivlos walked in. Sure, he recieved a small, soft smile, but she didn't dare give him a finger-wriggle of greeting.
Cleo, on the other hand, kicked back and propped her foot against the base of her chair. She waited until Cleo was done before letting it fly. "Uuuuhmmm..." She splayed her fingers out. "I don't know anything about spell casting, other then a meeting with - uh. A teacher. And stuff. Just, formulas and stuff. Nothing awesome."
"Basics." Emi echoed, her voice soft. "Just - basics. No actual spells."

Raven exhaled loudly. Wonderful. More trouble.
When she was satisfied that the newest student was keeping quiet, she focused on the others. "While I have not had the pleasure of discussing curriculum with Professor Jetter, I am pleased to hear he starts with a good grounding." It was a bit disappointing to hear that this particular student wasn't focusing on the magical arts, but at least she was keeping her mind open. Maybe Raven could convert her yet.
As to the other girls... Emi seemed dedicated, at least, from their last class. The golden one, however, Raven would have been happy barring from the class. Or at least rearranging the pairs.
Instead, she gestured to a supply closet on the left side of the room. "Each pair, send one person to that closet to retrieve a set of ingredients. The ones on the bottom shelf are all pre-packaged; you are looking for a set marked 'A.' The other person in the team can open the cabinet under your desk and take one student-sized cauldron and one set of beakers. Await my instructions before doing anything else."

[ Nothing from Gabs, so I'm hoping I can continue? xD; I've been waiting ages to get Tyv a magic class. ]
Without bothering to discuss it, Tyven stood, gracefully moving toward the specified closet, crouching, and selecting the package designated. A glance over her shoulder had her hesitating only a moment before she retrieved another of the sets, quietly placing it on the counter in front of Emi as she continued back to her seat.
A split second later and she'd removed the cauldron and beaker set, regaining her seat beside Cleo. If she could lift the delicate and heavy items, why bother Cleo and Emi with it?
Maybe if Kievlos turned out to be completely worthless, Tyven could just double up on the work and have both Emi and Cleo as her partner. To be honest, Emi would be a lot more helpful...

Emi smiled brilliantly when she saw Tyven pick up the extra set She half-stood, long legs stretched so her toes pressed to the floor, rear perched on the edge of the seat. Instead of simply letting Tyven lay the package down, the young swan wrapped paper-fragile fingers around her wrist and squeezed.
"Thank you, Tyven," the pale girl pered shyly up at her cousin. "That was very nice of you."
She released Tyven and sat back once more. Carefully, she set the items on their desk. Keivlos received a small smile, her eyes crinkling. "Are you ready, Keivlos?"
Cleo didn't bother to hide the glare she cast to her feathered cousin. She disliked the attention Tyven gave the shy, wilting creature, how soft she appeared. Augh.
She didn't LIKE it.
"Are you quite done?" She huffed, her cheeks fluffed out akin to an adorable hamster. While Tyven delayed, she had set up her own little set, wings flustered and pressed tight to her back. "To the learning, people."

Raven raised her eyebrows as she watched Tyven do almost all of the work required. While she appreciated hard work, she wasn't sure how she felt about having everything stacked on one pupil. "This is an exercise in teamwork as well as magic," she noted, not looking at anyone in particular as she took out her own set of ingredients.
"To the learning, indeed. The ingredients we will get to in a moment, but can anyone tell me the importance of using cauldrons when mixing ingredients? It is not just for the aesthetic effect, I will tell you that much now."

Swallow.
That was Tyven's only response to Emi, her lavender eyes jumping up quickly to catch the swan's dark gaze before she had returned to her seat. An eyebrow was mutely raised at Cleo's reaction, as she found herself touching the wrist Emi had just touched moments prior, and she seemed about to say something--- before Raven continued.
Examining the cauldron before her, she spoke, almost musingly. "The cauldron is made from everything." Her cryptic remark was elaborated on as she further explored her thoughts, one slim finger tracing the lip of the mixing device. "The metal comes from the earth, the air to stoke the fire, fire to melt metal, and water to cool it. Spirit lies in the intent behind the forging." Brow creasing slightly as her long [for Tyven] commentary, she fell silent, gaze shifting to avoid the other three students in the room.
"I do not know the importance, however." She realized that she'd been on a tangent, rather than properly answering the question.

"Excellent." It was not the answer Raven was aiming for, but it was correct and very well explained, and she could hardly ask for more. "Indeed, the cauldron is a place for all of the elements to come together. It is representative of blending. But it is also representation of life- note its resemblance to a womb, from which all life comes- and of creation, as well as fusion. The cauldron does not simply signify elements coming together, but new life being formed.
"Of course, we start with something far simpler. Alchemy is considered by some to be an art, to others a science, and to others impossible. To educated magic users, it is simply another term for combining ingredients. I'm sure you've heard of potions; this is only part of alchemy, but it is where we begin today."
Raven took a piece of chalk and wrote Somnus Somnambulous on the board. "Does anyone care to hazard a guess as to what type of potion we will be working on today?"

Emi swallowed and raised her hand. She spoke only when Raven gave her permission, aknowledged her in some way. Her voice, smaller than before, barely able to reach the ears of her professor, came after she looked down to the desk.
"A sleep spell?" Her hands grasped the edge of the desk, shoulders going towards her ears. Emi took a deep breath, forced herself to relax, and dared to look up at Raven. "A-A sleep spell. Somnus was - he was H-Hypnos, the brother to death and night."
She wet her lips, bit her lower lip. "At least, that's what my m-mythology book said."

Waiting politely until Emi had finished, Tyven lifted her wrist from the desk, two slim fingers signalling her desire to speak by pointing her pen toward the instructor. When acknowledged, she reached for a different knowledge base, seeking to add on to what the swan had said.
"The word is derived from two latin terms I can recognize, Professor Millner. One being 'somnus', or 'sleep' and the other being 'ambulare', or 'to walk'."
Taking a shallow breath, she lowered the pen back to her notebook, raising her eyebrows and drawing a conclusion. She hated to state things she was unsure of, but the teacher had asked.
"Along the lines of Miss Kuseth's comments, perhaps it is a sleep-walking potion, or one to establish control of an individual after putting them into a dormant, sleep-like state?"
Or was that too advanced for a beginner's lab?
