It's been mentioned before, but...

Try YFU! biggrin *points at her profile*

www.youthforunderstanding.com

Though I just noticed they don't offer the full year for American exchange students... sad

If anyone has a question about that organization, feel free to pm me. I've been an exchange student to the U.S. with that program (I'm German), and my Senior year at an American highschool definitely changed my life. YFU sends students to more than 40 countries!!!

Anyplace you wanna go - IT'S WORTH IT!!

That's a great idea. I have kinda the same plans. Well, I don't want to be a designer - but a teacher. And if I can't find a job here I wanna go to Japan and teach German there. Or English, but I guess you guys have to tell me if I could do that. sweatdrop

I wish I could spend a year of high school abroad, but I don't want to run into problems with tranfering the grades to America and risk repeating a year.
I might go on 13th year abroad, but it depends on my college scholarship options.
If that doesn't work I'll just spend a year of college.

Okay, I know most of your are still in junior high or senior high school, but some are in college. Is anyone planning to apply to JET or any other teaching programs in Japan this year? I'm going for JET, as are 10 other people I know. The application comes out in September, I'm already nervous since they are so vague about what they want. GPA and what your degree is in apparently doesn't matter, knowing a lick of Japanese doesnt matter (seems to sometimes put you at a disadvantage if you have studied it for a while), experiance with kids doesn't matter, what the heck is a factor?! Ack! I shouldn't stress already.

Yeah I know what you mean. I'm not sure if going into a higher level bachelors degree is best since they seem to want average people. Most people don't get degrees in pharmacy and such >.o.

I DO have a while yet though. I am only 18 and a half, but I am almost done with my two year degree. Only downside is I gotta finish this semester, next and then do my bachelors. If I work summers I might get an application in within two years -.-

I could see if I can take some schooling in Japan, I am sure I could get a schollarship if they offer it, I got hella good grades rofl

I'm not entirely sure what they are looking for in a JET. neutral Other teaching programs really look for the potential of a good teacher through their group interviews and such. Currently, a friend of mine is in Yokohama teaching with AEON and she loves it, but her words of caution are that it may not be for everyone.

I'm applying to one of the alternate language programs because I would prefer to teach adults rather than children (which is what is generally done in JET). I would at least have a better ground to relate with the older crowd than the rather moody teenage group. sweatdrop JET is notorious for not placing people where they want to be, so ... yea. I want to have some control of what part of Japan I will be living in, too.

Perhaps you could elaborate?

See, I've heard that too, but I've been frequenting this site recently (I think i'm lost) and many of the people were placed in one of their selections. One guy was even brought in from the alternate list and was place in Osaka-fu! Some people said they think if you have ties to an area (i.e. visited it or did a home stay) then you're more likely to be placed there just because you'll have an easier time transitioning. I think I read somewhere about 1/3 of accepted applicants gets placed in one of their 3 prefered areas/cities. It wouldn't surpirse me if the other 2/3rd are the ones who request Tokyo/Osaka/Kyoto

But then again, it just shows vague and all over the place the stories out of JET are. One person will tell me if you have taken any japanese classes, you're in. Another person who was in fourth year japanese at my school was placed on the alternate list. I'm just gonna apply and not stress about it too much.

Its easiest to read through the experiences of others:

http://www.livejournal.com/community/eikaiwa/

The friend of mine runs the Eikaiwa community. Both have hints on how to get in with the interviews, etc.

I hate to post a question without really looking around alot but I got bored of looking and figured I would just ask~

Any of you know a place where you can do all of this for college in Japan?
1) Get a scholarship to get there. I got teh grades but I ain't got teh moneys.
2) A university there that offers a bachelors degree in Food and Nutritional Science. (Need to get that then get my bachelors in Pharmecy and the rest is irrelivant to this topic)
3) ... actually just those two would be a good step in the right direction. I need to get a bachelors degree in that and if I don't do it in Japan I can just as easily (well yeah, probly alot easier) do it here.

Just wondering of course pirate
