He stretched his sore limbs while he listened to the brightly furred Alpha speak. Her voice was calm, but sturdy and she had a past, like himself, even if he did not know what hers was and she, likewise, did not know his. He would have to tell her before he was officially absorbed into her pack.

"Water... Ah c'd use it." He replied quietly. His voice was somewhat hoarse from the hard run he had gone through the past couple of days. Things would get better... Wouldn't they?

"Ah c'd ainly use some eats, too... An' Ah'd love t' 'elp ' patrol..."

Benita lead him to the river again. She drank first then moved out of the way so he could have his turn. Meanwhile she smelled the air for any nearby prey. She couldn't smell many new fresh scents. The prey must have moved elsewhere. Ah well, they would patrol and hunt when they came upon any prey trails.

Along the patrol she'd show him around the territory as well. Kill three birds with one stone. "I'll show you my territory's borders, some useful land marks. Hopefully on the way we'll smell dinner close by. I don't smell much now but my lands are big enough that they could be elsewhere." She told him.

He lapped the cool river water up hastily and it was certainly tasty and refreshing. He pulled away only when his thirst was slaked and his stomach was full of fresh river water. He felt content in this territory and it's size and alpha brought to him a certain peace he had not felt in a while, not since his thieving days he spent with his mother and her small pack.

"S'right big." He commented quietly as he tagged along behind Benita at a smooth and calm pace. He didn't doubt that there would be prey here, even if he couldn't smell it right off the bat. The territory was large, wide, and would certainly contain something or another to snack on.

"The river's a good landmark, it cuts straight through my territory so if you find it you can just follow it home." She began, heading toward her borders, nose in the air. They were walking a while before she reached a large pile of stones. "This is the mark to half way to the border. Be careful among those rocks, snakes often hide in there." She warned, marking the spot with her scent. She would show him the smells of the borders so he could remember them and not accidentally be caught outside of her borders. She didn't know how other packs would react to him and didn't want him to get hurt. She caught a trace of prey and followed it. There was a trail of deer tracks but they led into the other territory. She huffed in disappointment. She usually flew above her deer herds and tried to keep them within her territory but sometimes a few ran off. This one got away. She sat by a tall patch of bamboo with cuts all over the stems.

"The other pack made these teeth and claw marks on the bamboo to mark their border. Take a whiff but not too hard. This pack tends to eat carrion and stale meat so their breathe really stinks!" She grimaced, marking her territory here too to make sure they remembered their border and didn't try stealing her territory.

He followed this Alpha without hesitation and carried himself with a manner that reflected a bit of humble pride. He would not dream of challenging her and he owed her so much for her kindness. He had already decided, just over the night, that his life would be wholly devoted to serving her and doing whatever would be within his grasp to do for her pack.

He took note of the river, the stones, and the bamboo borders carefully. He placed each and every spot in his young, calculating mind and as he did so he leaned towards the bamboo shoots that were scraped and clawed.

He winced and pulled his head back. Too much of a wiff for his liking, that was for sure!

"Jeeze, that stinks!" He commented as he shook his head and tried to blow the smell from his nostrils. "Carri'n? 'Ave they nothin' fresh t'eat?"

Despite being an alpha she wasn't going to be arrogant and lie to make the other pack look bad. "I don't know. They have wings like I do, to fly over and see would be an invasion of their territory and there would probably be a fight so I don't ever go over the border. I do know from their warning howls that it is a decent-sized pack so it's possible their territory doesn't have enough prey to sustain them." She theorized, shrugging her shoulders. "They try to appear hostile all the time but their not that tough, I've been able to protect this territory from them by myself. That's why they gnaw and scratch on the bamboo. It's never enough to simply mark your scent on it for them." She explained.

"Their trouble sometimes, but their alpha isn't the brightest star in the sky if you know what I mean. Often times it's not hard to drive them back where they belong. It's usually around winter that they start getting sneaky. In the other months, as long as they have their carrion to eat they'll stay put where they belong."

Getting back to her tour she led him in another direction. There was another border, another pack he should know about. A wall of blueberry bushes marked the invisible line where their lands began. "This border is sometimes tricky to see and smell right off the bat. These guys don't stink or eat carrion. All of my dealings with this pack so far have been kind and good..." She began slowly. "If you smell carefully enough though you'll notice a milky scent. They have pups over there, and they love them. They'd probably protect those pups with their lives if they had to. They may not be any threat to us, they'd probably just warn you and send you back in the right direction if you accidentally passed the border but I know mothers. Don't mess with their pups." She finished. There was only one border left to show him after this. She marked her scent gently here, communicating to the other pack that they were allies for now. She wondered how they would react to Verdauga's scent? They'd probably be happy that her pack seemed to be growing. If he stayed that is.

She was temporarily distracted from any of his answers by the smell of prey. They were getting closer to herd of deer, in their territory this time. She spotted their hoofed tracks off to the left, the prints in the dirt were heading toward a grove of trees. They would probably hunt together and have breakfast before she showed him the last border.

"Huh, seems so. If they ain't got 'nough t'eat, they ought'er of stopped 'avin' pups a good while back." He couldn't help but display a hint of distaste for the carrion devouring pack, but he dwelled no further on them and gave a sigh, instead. He did like pups and the thought of youngsters eating carrion made his stomach churn.

Instead of speaking any further on them, he followe close behind his new Alpha.

"Ah lnow well 'nough 'bout that." He mumbled as he inhaled at the brush. It was faint, but the scents were there and he made a point to catalog each and every smell that reached his nose. He was about to speak again, but noticed her attention was gone from him and on something else that he could smell.

Food.

His stomach gave a gurgle, expressing his hunger. He couldn't help but to lick his chops in anticipation.

Benita hid swiftly to cover her bright colors. A doe hopped into the clearing, not noticing the brown helix. It looked around behind it, in front, ears flicking around. Finally it let it's guard down enough to lower it's head and nibble on the greenest of plants growing on the forest floor. The creature didn't make a sound, dainty cloven feet keeping her moving with silent grace. They were down wind of it for now.

Benita couldn't take flight or risk startling the prey. Instead she plotted a ground attack. They'd have to work together, like a pack. Her heart quickened with excitement, green eyes judging which approach would be most effective in taking down the animal.

Verdauga had difficulty masking his excitment as he crouched low, hiding himself in the underbrush that the Eastern forests offered in protection. He blended well and the doe didn't notice him, thankfully. The scent of the doe was tantalizing and his tongue drifted over his chops once more as he imagined sinking his teeth into the tender flesh of the swift doe.

He held his body perfectly still and his muscles tensed as he prepared for whichever plan his new alpha would come up with. He would do anything she told him, what with the kindness and protection she offered.

For the first time he could recall, he truly felt he belonged. The pack was small, especially seeing as it only consisted of Benita and now himself, but it was better than what he came from. His former pack had been a ruthless, wandering bunch of theives and murderers. While he had a history of death, it was not something he ever wanted to taint his image with. Try as he might, he would of never been able to fit in with his mother's ruthless band of vagabonds. This would be a pack held together by trust and bonds, not whoever was slyest and contributed the most treasure.

Benita drew her plan in the dirt silently with a claw. She would lie in wait since her bright colors were a huge neon sign of danger if she was seen by it. She wanted Verdauga to circle around since he camouflaged better and get the prey running in her direction. Benita would use her large size and spread wings to block the doe from escape. Together they would both make the kill. She froze when the doe looked up then relaxed again only when the doe's head was back down, eating again. She kept her head and ears down low, signaling with a slow wave of her tail fluff for him to get into position.

She had never had help before, or been on the ground while hunting. Normally she attacked from the air. She found this way more invigorating. It was also nice to have a team partner, Verdauga had a great color advantage over her.

The younger helix grinned silently as he followed the trace of her claws in the soft dirt beneath their paws. He understood perfectly and was itching to begin the chase. He had never flown and the prospect of hunting from the sky, as Benita always had, never even occurred to him until this point, now that he had met a winged helix.

The thought was fleeting, but it was there, it must be fun to fly.

At the flick of her tuft, he was moving swiftly and stealthily through the underbrush, relying on his dark fur and silent movements to help him. His wooden leg would of posed a problem at one time, but he had managed to adapt around it and so long as he was careful where he placed it, he was fine.

His muscles were tense as he crouched low, his single blue eye pinned to the most unfortunate doe ahead of him, and he waited for the perfect time to strike. Her head was lowered and she was nibbling away at the fresh shoots of grass.

Perfect.

He sprang from his hiding spot from just behind the doe and charged speedily at her.

Startled the deer let out a bleating sound of fear and leaped away from him, falling right into the pack's trap. Benita snarled, spreading her wings out as far as they could go in the most intimidating display she could manage. Shocked the doe froze as if caught in the headlights of a car. Benita took that chance and leaped for the throat. Too late the herbivore reared up just as the Alpha female clamped her teeth into the creature's neck. Benita folded her wings close to her body to prevent any injury to them and heaved downward. The deer landed heavily back down on all fours but she wasn't on her side and on the ground yet. Normally Benita's dive from the sky gave her the momentum to knock any prey over. Today she waited for Verdauga's attack from behind, he would help her bring down this big meal. With it's throat in her jaws this food wasn't escaping anywhere.

Verdauga was fleet of paw, but full of young energy and the strength of a near adult. It did not take him long to reach the area where he had flushed the doe right into Benita's trap and it took him an even shorter period of time to launch himself bodily at the unfortunate creature and latch his jaws around the back, base of her neck, away from where Benita had seized her. He used his weight and the force of his clamping bite to bring the doe down to the earth beneath their paws, finalizing the kill that his new Alpha had schemed.

He held tight to the kicking, bleating thing until it finally passed from this world to the next.

His brown tail wagged slowly as he peered up at the brightly hued helix that had initially snagged the doe and gave a cheery nod of approval.

"E's been a long time since ah 'ad any 'elp wi' th' hunt. Was fun!"

Just as she'd hoped he hunted splendidly and helped her kill the creature. Benita made absolutely sure it was dead before letting go to respond.

"I thought so too! Not used to ground hunting. After lunch we only have one more border to check then we can go home and relax for the rest of the day." She informed him, hunting was tiring but that last border was the most important to check.

Pushing the thought away from her mind for now she went for the tummy, biting hard into the skin and fur to rip it open. Grabbing a strip of loose fur she pulled it off the hide, revealing muscle underneath. Their was plenty here for the two of them.

"Your still growing, you eat the good parts. Besides, your my guest." She ordered, positioning herself at the lower part of the doe, she started ripping into the hind leg muscle. Benita wanted all pups and teenagers to grow up big, healthy, and strong. They were the future of the pack, vital to it's strength. She wouldn't take no for an answer, though she'd understand if he resented being treated as younger. His experiences in life had left him more a mature adult then a young teenager.
