Breeze’s gaze was unwavering when she replied.

“I’ve been hearing some… rumors concerning Basil for quite some time now. Though perhaps not of the best nature, it was hardly my place to believe them or even judge him when he has been so helpful and hard-working where I’m concerned.” Hardly her true feelings but she always did try to hide her judgmental nature.

“But last I heard he was getting ready to have his first clutch with a Forager, Fire-something. He looked quite happy really. He’s been a little evasive ever since so I just assumed the hatchlings were being a bit more trouble than he expected. And well… he had always been true to his family’s… beliefs. I assume you know about his family?” She looked a little disconcerted now.

Now this was disconcerting. He had expected to fly to the teacher's territory in hopes of uncovering some helpful information about Basil's history in his craft, but instead, he was given an entirely different set of news that he didn't quite know how to deal with. According to the Mist, he was starting a family with someone other than his niece.

His feathers raised in agitation of the thought, his ear tufts just barely above his feathered scalp. "....I can't understand that. For as long as I know, Basil had been courting my niece and are preparing a nest of their own. How could there be another?" The wildtype had been so nervous in his territory, certainly the teacher might have confused her gossip with somebody else, for there is no way for someone as nervous as Basil to be bold enough to do such a move.

Though at the same time, the crafter never mentioned his family during his visit. Perhaps it was because he himself had been too preoccupy to see what he could be to really ask what he already was and about his life prior to Fi. "...No, I don't."

It occurred to the teacher for the first time that perhaps the old Builder wasn’t as close to the couple as she had previously assumed.

“Oh, I don’t believe he’d be with the two at the same time. If the rumors are true, then he’s too much of…“ …a coward. But she wouldn’t say that much out loud. “I don’t think he’d do something like that.”

She sighed with clear disappointment marking her movements and expression.

“Maybe I’m just assuming the worst of him. It’s possible that they sent the children to the minders as soon as they were born… maybe the mating didn’t work out… it was arranged by the parents, after all. I just find it odd that no word of the children has come to me.”

The teacher preened some wayward feathers, casting sneaky glances at the older sentinel while she tried to determine the thoughts behind his expression. While she wasn’t sure if speaking so openly was the best course of action, Breeze understood that there were things a concerned family member had the right to know.

“Basil’s family is one of the oldest wildtype families around. With the kind of teaching’s they pass on to their children, I admit I was surprised Basil chose to associate himself with a Ghost like me even if it was just business.” She left the words in the air, feeling the underlying message was obvious enough: Basil’s was of a typist family well known for being overly proud of their pure ancestry. “To be courting a Mist… I admit I didn’t believe the rumors until now.”

He had hoped that perhaps the Ghost was mistaken in what she had heard. Surely, the boy couldn't have had any other relations aside from the one he's in now, right? But as he continued to hear what Breeze had to say on the matter, more and more he became worried. She sounded very certain of herself, as though he truly had another family before coming along to his own, and that was rather unsettling. Did Fi know?

A stern look washed across Blackbirch's face to conceal what he was really thinking, a force of habit he developed while dealing with those who would rather not be dealt with by the likes of him. When she began about his family tree, the stern gaze flickered in brief anger. If that would be the case, than Basil would not be caught dead with a mentor like himself, let alone nesting with Fi.

"...I see," He simply stated. He can't tell for sure if what Breeze is telling is truth or not, as he hadn't really heard any of this before and from what he's seen, Basil doesn't quite fit the description. Well, whatever it was, his niece was happy for the moment, and if things were to go sour, he'll know where to start looking.

But for now, he had probably overstayed his welcome. "Well, I've certainly stalled you for more time than I intended to. Thank you, again, for your information....I will keep it all in mind."

Spreading his wings, he turns over to face the direction in which he had come from. "My offer for you still stands if you're any bit interested. Have a good evening." With his good-bye said, he nods his head to her and took off, catching the air with his wingspan and going back to his territory. He had a lot to think about, indeed.

“I’m sorry the information I had was a little unexpected.” She said softly. “I hope there’s a simple explanation for all this.” One that isn’t revolting, preferably.
As Blackbirch prepared to leave, the teacher dragged the limp body of the squirrel closer to her, feeling she had done her share of the trade. The reminder of his offer made her eartufts twitch uncomfortably. Not that she didn’t think the old sentinel was qualified for the job but seriously… she had taught Odd Winter, a strange unexplainable aberrant and Liana, a mixed-type aberrant, often helped her teach her fledglings. Accepting Blackbirch’s offer might give her the label of an “aberrant-lover”, especially when considering her own type. It wasn’t just the prospect of bothersome rumors and whispered comments that upset her but that sort of label might even negatively affect some of her business dealings.

“I’ll certainly consider it, thank you.” She replied bowing the grey head respectfully even though her thoughts were on bribing old Copperstone out of his retirement. “Good evening to you as well.” And she watched him leave, preened the skurri’s furry ears and after removing the squirrel’s bushy tail with her powerful beak, she proceeded to eat her reward whole.
