"I can swim!" Galleai assured him. It wasn't her most favorite thing to do, but she was acceptably efficient at it. And she was eager to get to the tower and see what secrets it held as well. "What are yer orders, cap'n?" She asked in her best piratey voice.

He grinned, then said: "Let's go explore the tower! C'mon, first mate Galleai, last one overboard is a- a- a really bad egg!" With that said, he jumped onto the railing (when had that gotten there?) and tumbled over the side; when he surfaced, he was swimming like he had been born to the water. "C'mon," he repeated loudly, floating in the salty water. "We've got a long ways to go!"

Actually, the island just seemed to be getting closer and closer, even though they weren't moving...

Not about to be left behind, Galleai vaulted over the railing and landed in the water with a splash. "To the tower!" She agreed, swimming towards it, though it seemed to be doing most of the work and coming towards them. Not wanting to be a really bad egg, though, Galleai started paddling harder.

Well, he'd got to be captain so Galleai should get to win something too; he slowed down, letting her pass him, and did indeed end up on the shore after her. Carlisle kicked off his shoes, which were rather water-logged (he was surprised they hadn't fallen off in the water) and trudged a couple steps to a fallen log, where he sat, suddenly out of breath.

"It's a lot bigger close up," he said intelligently, squinting up at the tower. It was made of white brick, and brilliant red light sang freely from the windows, which were organic and didn't look like they could be opened. "Where do you think the light comes from?"

Galleai squinted as well, the red light blinding her. The tower itself was beautiful, but there was something about the red that made her a little bit uneasy. Perhaps it was memories of nightmares past that gave her shivers all up and down her spine.

Moving up to the base of the tower, she examined it. "I don't see a way in here, cap'n." She called out to Carlisle. Beyond the beach was dense, heavy greenery that seemed to cling to the white bricks. "Maybe the door is around the other side." She looked up and up and up. "Or maybe we have to climb..." This was added rather doubtfully.

The tower was quite big around; it would take forever for them to walk around it. Probably longer than it would take to climb up it. "No," said Carlisle confidently. "I bet the door's pretty close by! We probably just have to find a key, or say a magic word, or something."

He turned on his heel to face the red glow. "Open sesame," he said. Nothing happened. "Abracadabra?" Still nothing...

"Hare Krishna?" Galleai tried. "Lemon pie! Xenu!" None of these seemed to work either. With a sigh, she looked around the beach area. "Hey! Hey cap'n! Look!" Sitting conveniently half buried in sand and covered in driftwood was what appeared to be a heavily locked and chained treasure chest.

Lemon pie wasn't a secret password! But maybe it could be. He glared at the tower. How stupid... Galleai drew his attention to the chest, so he bounded over to it and pushed the driftwood away. "It's locked," he called to his first mate, stating the obvious as he was so skilled at. "D'you see a key anywhere?"

The chest clicked open, revealing not treasure but a single scroll. "Come see," he called excitedly.

She was about to respond about the lack of a key being spotted anywhere when he bid her come. "Ooh... What is it?" Duh. A scroll. "I mean, what does it say? Is it the password?" She peered over his shoulder, oblivious of his personal space bubble and stared at the aged parchment.

He expected the letters to defy him as they so often did, but instead he could read the word on the papyrus scroll quite clearly. "Melisane aa," he said, quite unaware that the things he saw as words would translate across to Galleai as nothing more than scribbles. Why did Melisane aa sound so familiar, anyway?

The question breezed out of his mind when he saw a great gate open from the formerly unmarked side of the tower. "C'mon," he said, looping his arm through his first mate's. "Let's go explore!"

Melisane aa didn't ring any such bells for the girl, but it hardly mattered. She grinned at Carlisle as the door opened up. "To adventure!" She responded, skipping along with him.

The gate opened up into darkness. A damp, warm darkness like the breath of some great beast. But in the distance there was that red light. "Cool..." Galleai muttered under her breath.

He looked up, then walked a little deeper into the tower. Something slammed shut behind them, and turning to look revealed that a smooth wall blocked the way back to the sunny beach. Just upwards, he supposed, no other way to go about it. "Yes," Carlisle agreed, wishing there was a little more light even though he could see perfectly well because of the red glow. "Do you see the- There they are."

A set of stairs spiraled around the walls, up and up and up- Carlisle ran over to them and was three or five steps up before he thought to pause and look back at Galleai. "C'mon, I don't think there's anything on this floor!"

Galleai had hesitated at the foot of the stairs. Not because she was afraid to go up, but because she wondered if maybe there was something cool down here. But she quickly realized that Carlisle was probably right, this floor seemed pretty dead and empty. In a flash she was on the stairs right behind him, drawing a short wooden sword that hadn't been there before. "Lets go!"
PostPosted: Sat Dec 27, 2008 7:39 pm

The stairs went up for miles and miles, but Carlisle didn't feel like he was getting tired. In fact, the higher he went, the lighter he felt- like everything was being left behind. Any second now, he felt for sure like he would take flight.

Then they found the top of the stairs. In the exact center of the circular room, there was a glowing circle overlaid on the floor- a clock with thirteen numbers and no hands at all. He didn't realize it, but it was an exact replication of his halo. And instead of stone walls and floor like every other part of the tower, the walls were papered with pieces of gloss, newsprint, parchment- all kinds of paper. Smeared across the paper in thick blank ink were strange symbols that someone else might recognize as words- but the ability to read them seemed to have passed with the paper outside.

Carlisle's face fell. Was this what they had come all the way up here for?...

"Wooow..." Galleai muttered, wandering into the room behind him. She took in the oddly papered walls, though she couldn't seem to read the print either. It didn't seem to be a dream language she'd come across before. Not suprising, though. Then she made her way to the center of the room and stared at the clock. "Hey, cap'n, it looks like the one you got around your head." She reached out tentatively to touch the glowing outline. "I wonder what it means."
