They can, really, and as I discovered, they can open up plots to you if you just take a look now and again and put the pieces together.
I want to try to get my rough draft done by the end of the year. Whether or not that succeeds, time will tell. I am doing my best to set up a writing habit: at least two pages of this little notebook a day, and when I get that habit jump-started, I will shoot for more and more pages. But still, it will probably be a few more years before I am ready to let it go. Things keep falling into place.
For example, with my main character, there are two sides to her, and both sides basically boil down to a strong, confident mask on the outside, and a scared little crybaby on the inside. Neither, however, is her true self. I had a revelation just last night about who she really is. And then there was the thing with looking at two character's back stories. I was struggling for a plot for the third (hopefully) book of the series, and I was provided with at least a major subplot. Before that, a minor object became a lot more important, a character's death opened up a whole new can of worms, and I had a role that I needed filled and struggled to find a character to fit it, only to realize I already had one in the form of a minor character who was originally just there to exist.
I have a feeling that there are still several more pieces just waiting to fall into place, and I have to keep writing and analyzing to find them.

In my case, I fell in love with a minor character - like really minor. So, I have decided that he must come back. MUST.
I just don't know what to do with him yet...
That's pretty cool! Your entire fall-into-place experience. Haven't quite had that kind of epiphany yet...

My advice is to just write, and maybe something will come to you. If not, keep an eye out for roles that your story needs. Maybe he can fill one of those.
Thanks. ^^ And I never know what is going to hit me next. That may be one reason I have such an attachment to this story; I never know what will come out of it.

That's what I try to do... i'm hoping something pops up.
I love those WTF moments xD my best example is: I'm writing one day - a future scene - and suddenly out-of-the-blue, my main character tells me 'oh, by the way, I'm going to be blind for the next... majority of the book.' which strikes me as odd because he is afraid of the dark... like purely terrified of it. Yeah... I wish he'd let me in on this sooner.

I had those kind of moments. One of my weaker characters showed me she has a backbone when the chips are done. I also had another character become a double agent of sorts in his family. He puts on a facade for the public, but he shows a suffering character compassion in private, because he is unable to do so in public.

I know. I like how my antagonist evolved from an evil...thing that spawned from nowhere into a somewhat sympathetic character, and ended up twisting a lot of the story around with his character development. He is one of my favorite characters to write now. ^^

I love characters that rule the story. Sometimes it can be annoying but most of the time I sit back and allow my character to change.

My policy: my characters know more about themselves than I do... I just let them control everything... no matter how annoying it gets

Rose: In all honesty, letting him take control made it better, because it opened up a lot of different relationships he had, and in turn, those became numerous subplots. I also love how he and the protagonist have this ongoing "who is worse" sort of battle between them (like, in the eyes of the audience, not physically between them. Between them, they constantly do things to try to drive each other off the deep end).
Keys: I pretty much do the same thing. I might throw a curve ball at them to test them, though. Just to see how they come out of it. [/evil sadistic author]

Yeah, sometimes its best to just let the characters lead, especially when you are at a loss for a good plot.
It's so strange when that happens xD

Heh that's why I always have a journal or pieces of paper and pens around me. If I start to daydream while thinking about the characters sometimes some very interesting scenes get played out.. sucks though when I can't get the feeling back and can't write it out fully like I want. Probably that's why earlier I used to stay up through the night writing until I passed out after going into the half-awake dream state so I can just imagine/write and not get caught up in thinking xD

Chanthar: No matter where I am, I have a notebook. ...Or two. ...Or three. I kid you not.
I think I may end up trying that. I used to be able to write a lot more freely, and now...I am trying to force myself back into that habit.
Keys: So long as a good story comes from it, they can murder me in my sleep for all I care.

Unfortunately they won't let me have my notebook up at the register.. but, thre are plenty of pieces of paper xD; I write then stuff them in my pockets to type out when I come home. And heh I actually have two notebooks currently, one with ideas about books along with character stats that are too detailed and complex to transcribe to the new one .. so I keep that and the new one to write in as well -nods- lol they're called 'Fat lil Notebook' by Mead .. perfect for shoving in a pocket with plenty of pages so you won't run out right away Hm .. yes, writing bits that turn out to be a big story is awesome
