I feel bad for large and obese riders that long to horseback ride and everything, but I don't feel that out of pity, they should be allowed to ride a horse. At least not a light horse for regular riding, drafts or draft crosses were made to pull weight or carry it. There's certain breeds that could deal with the burden of a large rider. I've seen first hand the damage a large rider that is too selfish, embarrassed or ignorant to realize what their weight can do to a horse's back, legs and joints. They don't belong on a horse and if they do, then I think the horse should get to have a go and saddle up the rider and take them for a spin.

I agree ,it's better if a rider can move with the horse , insted of against it.

I agree with what basically everyone has been saying.
If you're that overweight that your horse is going to have trouble carrying you, don't ride it. Get a nice draft or just a bigger horse. I don't think it's fair to make it carry you. Lots of damage can happen to them just from carrying that heavy load. As mean as that sounds.

Now, I ride an Arabian. She isn't this dainty thing though. She's a lot sturdier than most Arabs usually are. [Bigger feet, a different kind of build.]
Now, I'm not the skinniest girl around, but I'm not horribly overweight. I think that me and my horse are well-suited.

I have absolutely nothing against obese people, or obese riders. I just think that it's not fair to expect your horse to be able to carry your weight with no trouble at all.

One of my friends who is... bigger, rides a big horse. I forget what he is, but he carries her like a regular horse would carry a five year old. She jumps, canters, trots.. everything. And she's a really talented rider. She rides a bigger horse, and has no problem!

And I agree with AriaStarSong~
Driving is also an option.

Just for fun can I ask you guys what you think obese is?

My daughter is 12, just hitting puberty or whatever, and has "baby fat". I would seriously have issues with someone that calls her obese and I'm afraid it's topics like these that keep people from sharing the love they have for their horse - 'specialy at a "tender" age. I also wanted to direct your attention to this thread on COTH it's been going on since around this time 2006 and has over 80 pages. Your personal opinion may be represented there or you may gain a new perspective. : http://www.chronicleforums.com/Forum/showthread.php?t=60308&highlight=Womanly+riders+unite

USEF Equitation Rules: http://www.usef.org/documents/ruleBook/2009/11-EQ.pdf
I searched and found the word "suitability" three times.

I'm 5'3, and I was showing a small pony for my trainer last summer. We always placed high in hunters, where rider size doesn't seem to matter, as long as the pony/horse doesn't appear to be having trouble carrying the rider, but in equitation classes in rated shows we never placed very high. In schooling shows, though, it didn't seem to affect our placings. I think it depends on the level of show and the judge's preference. I've only seen size affect placings in equitation classes, though, never in hunters, jumpers or western classes per say.

i think that those who are bigger in size should get a horse of their size but if they are still hurting the horse or risking the horses wellfare and health that they should be respectful enough to saze the horse as well as the money in their wallets going to the vet bills. I would also think that if they did hurt the horse they would fell terribly bad about themselves.
