Kaimi was painting purple flowers on Bishop's ornament, and made a little face when the subject of school came up. "I don't like school." She said, sticking out her tongue a little. "At least, I really dont like math. The art and P.E. are okay." She lowered her voice to whisper a secret at Bishop. "I skip class a lot and go to the beach instead. I met a girl with the bottom half of a cat at the beach!"

"We're getting the hang of things. I mean, if they'd just said 'heres a kid who needs a place to live' I'd have been happy to take her in without threatening letters. She's not a bad kid... she just needs practice at being good." Naomi took a sip of her eggnog and sighed appreciatively, silently sharing Carol's sentiment that Christmas needed to happen all the time.

Mara blinked, then took the marshmallow. It was good! Why hadn't Naomi gotten marshmallows for her? She briefly thought about throwing a tantrum about it, but then decided against it. She didn't want to get locked in the car, after all. And being good was a novel enough idea that she was willing to try it out until it got boring. "Where do you come from?" She asked the other blond girl.

"Like a tail and everything?" There was a girl with cat ears and tail who came into her mothers store but that was the only way they looked like a cat.As she spoke Bishop rolled the glove covered ornament in pan of nearby glitter. Being pleased when the glitter stuck mainly to the glued pattern. " and what's PE?"

Carol laughed softly " No I get all the the ones who need a home and conveniently show up in my store." Not that she minded horribly but it might be nice to prepare every now and then. " I don't think any child is ever really bad it's just some are naturally aggressive or destructive." Carol paused to review her words she supposed you could argue that point with sociopaths but now wasn't the time.

" Someplace dark and loud" Andrea replied, that was her first memory " and then I had a different mother and family and then my house melted and everyone was gone." No crying, Andrea wouldn't cry she was stronger than that! really she was.

It hurt though still to hear bishop call carol mommy and know she had no one to call that anymore. Frustrated she stared into her drink.

Kaimi nodded earnestly, adding some leaves and swirly designs in green to the ornament before picking up a dark orange glitter pen. "Yeah. And paws and everything! She had wings too! It was cool. I wish I looked like that." Kaimi looked longingly and Bishop's headwings.

Naomi nodded, sipping her eggnog. "I'm okay with two for now." She shook her head. "Kaimi keeps bringing home pets. The house just seems to grow and grow."

Mara's eyes got all wide. Dark and loud and melting sounded unspeakably appealing to Mara. "I came from a labbaterrie. They made me in a tube, I think." Mara said, nodding. "I didn't like it there."

Bishop giggled " I don't think I want paws, I like fingers and toes" Not that Bishop had found much use for her toes, stile she liked how it felt when she wiggled them, especially in the bath. Spotting a pretty shade of pink Bishop dipped her brush into it and began tracing along one side of her sparkle design. She caught Kaimi looking at her headwings and smiled. "I wish they let me fly" she admitted. It wasn't that she didn't like them she just wished they did something like other peoples wings.

Carol looked thoughtful for a moment " I think I'm going to make a rule about no pets, at least until after the holidays. With snow falling and the like training any animal to go outside for "business" might be impossible."

" A tube, was it big like in the movies?" Andrea remembered seeing people in tubes in several different movies. What they were doing in there she forgot.

"Flying would be so neat." Kaimi nodded. "Do you think they'll ever get big enough so that you can fly with them?" She didn't really know how things like that worked. The voices in her head told her that it was unlikely, but she ignored them. She was getting used to ignoring them when it suited her, even though they didn't like it.

"Oh goodness. She's brought home some sort of bizarre half bird-half cat thing, though it's mostly well behaved. And the other day she brought home a dust bunny! A big ol' dust bunny that squeaks and everything. Gaia can be so weird sometimes."

"I dont remember." Mara said, managing to spill some cocoa down the front of her jumper. She liked her clothes better when some sort of mess adorned them. "I remember lots of people in white coats, though. They didn't like it when I bit them." A small, dissatisfied sigh escaped her lips. "Not many people like to get bited."

Bishop's eyes brightened she hadn't thought about that, about getting bigger and them getting bigger to and maybe flying with them.

Bishop stood at the edge of a grassy cliff looking off into the ocean. It had been years since she'd visited the beach and now, now she returned to take her first steps towards freedom. A strong warm wind blew in the girls face pulling back on her hair and the long elegant headwings that trails back from the side of her head. Soon, she would fly.

" I hope they grow." Amber eyes looked at Kaimi " What do you want when you get bigger?" Not, Bishop noticed, that Kaimi wasn't already bigger than her a bit.

Carol just nodded, Gaia had always been her home but even for a native of the planet she was aware that the place had rhythm all it's own that practically no one could dance to perfectly." Definitely getting a no pet rule for a while" she mused. " Oh are you having the no I'm not eating that , thing yet? Recently Bishop seems to have declared war on all beans, fish and any food she doesn't like how it looks." Really you were supposed to try things before judging them.

Andrea giggled outright at Mara's last statement. " It hurts, no one wants to be hurt." she explained. " maybe you're an animal" she suggested " some of them bite each other to talk, I saw it on the dog whisperer show." It made sense if they could make a whole person they could make her part dog right? Even if she didn't look it.

Kaimi thought about this. "I dont know... I just wish I were magic. Any kind of magic. I feel so boring." She giggled a little. "I met a fairy girl on the beach one day... she made a dustbunny appear out of nowhere and she gave it to me! I wish I could do something like that." She grinned at her friend. "But at least we can play like we can. Thats almost as good."

"Oh goodness, Mara is a picky eater out of sheer contrariness. She'll eat something one day and refuse it the next. Kaimi is pretty good, though. She wont eat meat. She tried it a couple of times and it did terrible things to her stomach."

Mara wasn't so sure about the hurting thing. Being bitten didn't hurt that much. Then again, here was a kid who could take a punch to the stomach and still grin about it. The animal comment made her show her fangs in a creepy grin, though. She liked that idea. "Woof! Woof woof!"

" Your flowers are magic" Bishop pointed out then pointed to her necklace with contained the flower Kaimi had given her encased in a special glass with air holes. " Normal flowers die but this one won't and it still smells like you." Bishop thought it might not be as cool as a fairy summoned dust bunny but it was still pretty neat and clearly magic. " I talk to it sometimes" the girl admitted quietly. Sometimes she just wanted someone to talk to and the flower reminded her of Kaimi who she was sure would listen.

" Weird, must be something in her that makes her a natural vegetarian" Carol thought that must be interesting if frustrating for Naomi who had to coordinate family meals around that.

Andrea laughed at the other girl, she was very strange, not in the same way as Bishop but definitely strange. " What sort of dog are you" the blond asked before sipping at her hot chocolate.

Kaimi perked up at Bishop's comment. "Hey, yeah, I guess they are kind of magical in a way." She added some more swirls to the ornament. "You talk to it? Really?" Her smile widened. For some reason the fact that Bishop took such good care of the flower made Kaimi feel like Bishop was taking good care of her too. It made her feel special. Impulsively, Kaimi leaned over and gave her friend a hug.

"Thats what I think. She does seem to have an affinity towards plants, after all. Though I would think that would make her not want to eat vegetables or something. Then again, I think Kaimi would be perfectly happy living on a diet of peanut butter and jelly beans."

What kind of dog? Mara thought about that for a minute. "A big one! With red eyes!" Yeah! That sounded good and menacing. "What about you? What kind of aminal would you be?"

Bishop returned the surprise hug , getting a bit of paint and sparkles on the other girl in the process. " It's lonely sometimes and you're my best friend." Bishop had met other children like the quiet August and the smart Kisala but Kaimi was still her favorite friend. Even when she went to school and met new kids she wouldn't forget the girl with the magic flowers.

Carol wrinkled her nose " I love those two things but even I'd get bored eventually, though I did eat peanut butter and bannana sandwiches for a whole week once. I was nine and trying to prove to my mom I didn't need her to cook for me." The woman shook her head head at the thought " I was so sick by the end"

"Cereberus is a big black dog with red eyes and huge teeth" Andrea said. She remembered that from a tv show on mythical creatures. " If I was an animal I'd be a dog too, becuase dogs are loyal. maybe a collie are something."

"You're my best friend too, you know." Kaimi, too, had met lots of other kids but none of them made her feel quite as happy and comfortable as Bishop did. "Lets be friends forever, okay?" It was a classic little girl promise. But one that Kaimi intended to keep to the death. "We can make a secret oath! And then no bad guys will ever be able to come between us."

Naomi chuckled. "Oh man, my mom is crazy. If I didn't eat everything on my plate when I was little she'd make me sit at the table until I'd cleaned it. I once sat there all night long because I refused to eat her onion casserole."

"Cerb'rus." Mara tried the name. "I'll be cerb'rus. You can be... Lassie?" That was the only collie she knew of. Lassie was an admirable dog, though far too altruistic for Mara's tastes.

Amber eye were alight with glee."Ok, " she looked furtively around at the others surrounding them. This wasn't a very secret place but it would have to do." It has to be a magic oath so even spells can't break it." Bishop valued her friend dearly and she wanted to make sure nothing ever happened to her or their friendship.

Carol laughed softly " I hated onions as a kid, love them now but I can see why as a kid you'd spend the night avoiding them.

Andrea shook her head " The lassie dog was secretly a boy, so maybe not a collie."

"I wish we were old enough to get tattoos." Kaimi grinned. "Then we could get matching ones. Lets make up a secret ritual..." She dabbed a bit of glitter on Bishop's ornament and examined it, trying to determine wether or not it was finished. "Something only we will know about that will bind us forever. Or something." Kaimi thought it would be pretty cool to make their very own magic spell or ritual that nobody else knew about.

"Yeah..." Naomi chuckled and glanced over at the two girls painting ornaments. "I have to tell you, I'm really glad our girls are friends."

"Lassie was a boy?" Mara hadn't known that. "How come they called him a girl all the time?"
PostPosted: Thu Nov 27, 2008 8:30 pm

" We could make our own" Bishop offered. " Like symbol that we drew on each morning when we woke up or something. As long as we didn't draw it with something that could hurt us or where anyone would get mad." Bishop had non toxic glitter pens at home. Sometimes when work was slow Carol would draw little bracelet designs around her wrist with them. Something like that could work, only something easier becuase the bracelets usually took a while.

The owl like girl looked at the ornament she'd made for Kaimi, silver white glitter danced across a clear surface ringed with purple on one side and and icey blue on the other. It was nice she thought, a little decorated but not covering the whole surface and making it look messy.

" Me too, it makes me happy to see Bishop so excited to go out when there's the possibility of seeing Kaimi. I don't have to worry about her being the kid with no friends who skips school and hangs around convenience stores all day." She also didn't appear to be the girl with only one friend which was also good. Dependency on one person lead to obsessiveness and that killed friendships and relationships quicker than anything , at least in Carol's experience.

" In the story it's a girl" Andrea explained" but a boy dog played the girl part becuase their fur stays prettier."

"Thats a good idea!" Kaimi enthused. She examined her own ornament, which was covered with glittery flowers and vines. "I think mine is done. What should we do next? And what kind of symbol should we use for our secret sign?"

Naomi nodded with a little chuckle. "Kaimi adores Bishop. She's got other friends, but she doesn't babble about them nearly as much." The woman found this amusing. She remembered what it was like as a little girl with that BFF that you thought would be there forever for you.

"Ooh.." Mara nodded wisely, though she still didn't really understand why they'd call a boy dog a girl dog. Why hadn't they just called Lassie "he"? "So not a collie, then. What other kind of doggie would you be?"
