Nicky: Omigoodness, what are you reading that they would have to go under the guise of children's stories to reach you? xD

It's a collection of stories by Dennis Wheatley. Most of his stories deal with possession, the devil, etc. No idea why that had to be hidden. sweatdrop

Maybe the seller was that uncomfortable with having them that they even when they were being sold, they felt the need to hide the truth?

I strongly dislike writings of any kind in my books. I like to keep them in mint condition. I'm OCD like that I suppose.
If someone were to write in one of MY books they can guarantee they'll never be allowed to borrow a book again.

Whenever I get a new book, one of the first things I do is write my name on the side where the book opens up... or on the first page... I once read a a book and inside I found a little piece of paper that had a little love note addressed to a kid named Toby... I

It doesn't bother me when people write in books, then when someone else reads it, they can sort of find out what the person was thinking when they were reading the book... Sometimes when I check-out books from a library, I look at that littl epaper that has names of people who have checked it out...

You can find a lot of things and people with different names; There was once a girl named Liaza-pumki who checked out Let The Circle Be Unbroken... I thought it was an... interesting name...

I've never been one to write in my own books, and I am sometimes the sort to pull out an eraser and try to clean up a book that has writing in it. Highlighting in textbooks is the one thing I will do, and it doesn't bother me if others have done that. Novels though, I can't even think about marking up. We were encouraged to mark our books in high school English, and I always got around it by using book darts, which my uncle gave me for Christmas one year.

The French class that I am currently taking is a reading course, and we are studying a novel. I bought a fancy little journal especially for taking notes and making translations of important passages. The other day in class I saw the girl next to me scribbling notes in pencil in the margins, and I admit I felt a little twinge of pity for the book, then I looked at the girl behind her, and nearly gasped out loud. She was highlighting, underlining and writing notes in the novel, all in
red pen. I nearly went into some kind of OCD shock. I could never do that to a book.

Those books darts look lovely. Wish I'd had some in college.

As far as the novel, I hope she doesn't plan to re-sell it. I sure wouldn't want to buy something like that from a used book store. (*shudder*)

In red pen? eek

I bought a Japanese textbook second hand and somebody had been answering the questions in the back. In pen.

Luckily it was only a few questions from the first lesson, but it really annoyed. Especially as one of the answers was wrong. stare

I only ever write in my textbooks if it's to connect a mistake in the text. Notes are something I make in notebooks.

I have never written in my books before, but I am not really opposed to the idea. I probably would if I needed to or something like that.

I personally don't like writing in books. I like to keep my books in mint condition.
It doesn't really bother me when I find writing in books unless it's something totally disrespectful. Back in middle school I found a provocative poem in a science text book. I also don't like reading used books with highlighter markings in them. The bright colors hurt my eyes.

I only write notes in books that I have to study, and in some books there's hardly any blank space left cause of all the notes lol! But I hate it when I visit the university library and people have made notes in books...it's defacing the book and I don't like it. When I make notes I do it on a seperate piece of paper or photocopy it.

i hardly ever write in books, i may make a doodle in the margin, but always so it erasable. I have highlighted some important parts in my schoolbooks (that i bought myself), and market the page with posts it in all the colors of the rainbow.

Lately thou i read a book that made me quite angry, and i had read a book earlier that was on the opposite side of the fence from that book, that pointed out mistakes, so i carefully wrote some comments and questions for the next reader XD (erasable of course)

I can't say I've ever written anything in a book before...I've highlighted key phrases and stuff from non fiction books I own so that I don't have to go hunting for the details when I look back in them but I guess I feel dirty writing in books. Like I'm doing something unholy, against the books gods or something.

However, I do love it when I pick up a secondhand book or rent something from the library and I find something written in it by a previous reader. It feels like I'm looking into some stranger's diary of their thoughts....personal.

One time I rented this Douglas Adams book and the margins where filled with little comments about his style of humor that just made me laugh out loud when I read them. Things like "Nice line Doug." and "Do you kiss your mom with that mouth?" Ha! I almost wanted to keep that book and now whenever I read Douglas Adams I think about that unknown stranger with a sense of humor.

Hannibalism
When I would check out books in middle school I would take little bits of scrap paper and scribble down a quick review of what I thought about the book and leave it wedged in the first few pages. Most of the books got a thumbs up. x3

That's a pretty cool idea! I wish I found stuff like that in the books I've checked out. :]

I've only ever written in math books because I'm too lazy to get out paper(it's just small things, and I don't do it often, so I don't really get in the way of other peoples' learning.) I also highlighted my history book once, but that was because I didn't want to read it so I was just looking up the topics that would be on the quiz in the index and highlighting the sentences.

When I order used books online, though, I go out of my way to try to get a book that's marked and/or highlighted. There's just something about reading someone else's notes.
