RuiZhi bobbed his head in a nod at the comment about Weiyuan. He really had nothing to say about the older Chinese youth; even though they had come to the school together and strong, they had drifted, no matter how similar their path was.
"Ah," he commented softly, "my s...Alex says that too. She speaks Chinese better than most but she's still struggling. Says that the vowels are different." He assumed she'd know, speaking several languages as it were.
Crossing his arms over his chest (more for comfort than to be standoffish), he tilted his head to regard his newest teacher. "May I ask where you came from, Doctor Hale?"

She smiled. "That's what my friends said, also. I find that two languages is enough to get me by." Siona shook her head and looked down at the book, pretending she wasn't taking mental notes. "Of course you may. I was born in the Punjab state of India. They called it the 'Land of the Five Rivers'."
Thoughtfully, she closed the book on one finger to hold her place. "You've said you're studying quite hard. How do you think you're doing in your classes? I haven't been here long, so I don't know all the intricacies of the system just yet..."

The information was filed away in RuiZhi's mind; he may or may not call upon it again in the future, but it was good to know a little about the woman who would be teaching him.
"Ah, classes..." The tone of his voice indicated he was less than pleased. "It's all self-taught. So I really couldn't give you a helpful answer, other than I've made it this far." His forefinger and thumb extended to pluck at the shoulder of his uniform. "I assume this means I'm doing something right." RuiZhi's smile was faint as he returned his attention to Siona. "I'm hoping the new staff means more hands-on and less memory retention games.
Not that self-learning is a bad thing," he ammended quietly, "but it's best to be taught by those who understand it, more than reading what's accepted as a truth. It's not the same."

She noted that, slid the book back into place and brushed her knuckles along it. "Of course. I'm so used to traditional education, I often forget that about Shinkami." Special circumstances call for special measures, obviously, but Siona wasn't sure that she approved of the strange way the school was run. The teachers would be around if they didn't understand anything, but there were things that required explanation to be fully understood. Self-education wouldn't help the boys with that one.
Siona crossed the room back to her desk and sat, resting her chin in the palm of her hand. "Yes, I agree with you," she said. "And I hope that, soon, I'll be able to help you with that sort of thing- the hands-on experience, at any rate."

RuiZhi bowed to Siona, smiling all the while. "I look forward to that," he said, smoothing his uniform once more. He felt he'd accomplished what he'd come for, and had exhausted friendly conversation for one day. "Thank you for taking the time to speak with me, Professora. I should get back to my homework."
He politely excused himself with another bow, making his way to the door, braid swinging casually against his back.
