"Let me keep the violin, then. Tell your father it was destroyed. Keep the puppet." Why did Gideon feel so much anger toward a man he knew nothing about? Perhaps it was solely because of the crying boy before him. Instinctively, the large, friendly demon leaned forward, wrapping gentle arms around the boy in a firm, somewhat fatherly, hug.

He hoped to whatever was out there that Kenth didn't find and kill him.

Micajah's shoulders shook as he cried silently, his efforts not to let any more embarrassing sounds come out of his body going fairly smoothly. He couldn't remember the last time he cried, his mother's funeral perhaps, yet here he was in a cold room sobbing on his hands and knees. The small puppet was pressed against his lips as he mouthed a word over and over into it, tears spilling onto the felt and on the nylon used for wings, but he felt no shame that he was the ruining this puppet. It had come with him through the fire and it was all he had left now, all that was left to show aside from broken memories.

Mother...!

When Gideon spoke to him about the violin he merely nodded his head in dumb response, not really caring what happened at this point in time to anything, and he continued to let the tears run down his cheeks until he felt...it. It was strange, and it made the breath in his lungs catch and create a squeaky gasp of shock and surprise. It wasn't a bad surprise, more or less a sensation came across him that he hadn't felt in over ten years. Micajah...couldn't recall what it was like to be hugged.

"Uew...."

Micajah's fingers curled tighter around the puppet as he started to cry even harder, the silent tears now turning to slight whimpers as he leaned into Gideon's frame. It was weird for him to be crying like this - he was old enough to know better, but it felt like it was okay, that this was the one time where his tears would be overlooked.

Gideon simply held the boy as gently as possible, letting him sob into his shirt. At this point, he couldn't allow himself to let the subject drop when it came to Micajah's father. He wouldn't ask today, but he had to know.

What was it with these poor boys, and horrible, horrible fathers? He made a low, comforting noise in his throat, humming to the tear-ridden Micajah. Gideon would stay there until the boy was able to stop crying.

"Are...are you choking, or trying...to hum..?"

Micajah's voice came through his sobs after a moment as they seemed to calm, though his shoulders still moved up and down now and again as his body tried to quiet itself. It was his own soft attempt at easing his tears as well, unwilling to allow a stranger to decide things completely for him in terms of him starting and stopping crying, and he chuckled a little.

"You sound like a car backfiring."

And Micajah sounded like an ungrateful jerk, but at least he was trying to stop snotting up his Professor's shirt.

Gideon gave the boy a mock-angry look, faking indignance, and straightened a bit, clearing his throat. "I'll have you know that in demon society, a voice like mine is considered a gift!" He gently patted an unburned part of the boy's body, before moving away a bit, and chuckling, himself.

"I'll tell you, boy, I find that I like you quite a bit." He shrugged his wide shoulders. "You belong in magic." A slight frown. "You've almost finished your basic studies, haven't you? A few classes left until your promotion?"

"Are demons tone deaf then, or do you all sound like different types of vehicles on the move when you sing?"

Micajah tried to push himself up into a more sitting position, his words still a little huffed as he sniffed away the last of his tears. They were still tricking down his face, though not as emotional now, and he moved his good hand to wipe them away with the now dampening bandages. His words were still meant in good humor, and one of them even managed to hold a small laugh in it somewhere.

"As for my studies, I...have one more to do. I've gotten everything else I need completed as far as I can tell, so it'll only be time that keeps me from advancing on now."

His cheeks blushed a little when Gideon had said that he belonged in magic. No one had ever told Micajah he belonged anywhere.

"You should hear our women, boy. Their voices can be so powerful as to make you do anything they want you to do." Gideon chuckled and got to his feet, nodding as Micajah detailed his studies.

"Wonderful, wonderful. It will be nice to have you a bit closer. It was quite the rush from my office to the beginning students' dorm last night!" He gave the boy a friendly, two-fingered salute. "I've got to get back to my duties, but I'll be looking out for you, Micajah. Don't be afraid to drop by my office."

"Out of wanting them to stop singing, or out of desire? Because either way seems hardly fair. As for me being closer to you, we'll see how that works out when the time comes. You may be a magic teacher and I may be a magic student, but you will be far busier than I ever will so there are chances that you may never see me again despite how few students there are here."

Micajah slowly made his way over to his bed from where he'd been laying, the movements slow and rather painful, and he had to stop and simply sit on the floor as his common senses slowly returned to him. He was exhausted now, all the adrenaline leaving his body just as quickly as it had come in, and his head bobbed for a moment as he tried to think of what else to say.

"Thank you for stopping by though, even though I didn't and won't tell you what you want to know. Thank you for saving my violin, even though I will probably not be able to play it so well anymore after breaking my fingers like this."

Not that it was such a huge loss. He hardly played it anyway.

"Thank you...for saving me from injury that I caused myself. Thank you for giving me my puppet, and for embracing me."

He seemed to just be going on and on now, the sudden weariness taking its toll.

"You'll have to meet one to find out." Gideon winked, and when the boy sat down, helped him back into the bed. "Don't thank me yet, Micajah." He smiled slightly, shaking his head. "I'm sure we'll run into each other again." Heading for the door, he made sure to grab his soda can. "I hope you heal quickly." With a nod, the demon left, shutting the door quietly behind himself.
