I have to agree with you, if you read my post in the being born in religion vs finding it on page two that will explain a little better. I think that you should have to find buddhism for yourself not just say ohh hey my friends are buddhist and so I am too. This usually ends up in false beliefs and what not. This is why we have so many people out there who write these books that are not completly true and so forth. Even when these people think that they are buddhist they are not, because they may follow the faith, but they do not know the meaning behind it cause it is something that is found through meditative contomplation.

well sayonara

Well, what you say is pretty true ... since of Buddhists in my country are pretty much Buddhist in name ... they don't know anything else about it ... sweatdrop

Egotystical Cows and Lords of Action(Cause and Effect) ? Cool, I didn't know those kind of books were sold out there ... sweatdrop

I know exactly what you mean. One of my friends likes to consider herself a Buddhist, simply because she thinks that the Buddha (in her words "the cute, little fat guy") is cool. It seems to me, to be somewhat ignorant; all the way around. People who do things, just to impress, could never truthfully be Buddhist anyhow.
There are no appearances, because appearances are delusions.

We are what we are. Wearing the mask of Buddhism does not make one a Buddhist.
My point exactly.

Yup ... Wearing the mask of Buddhism only makes you a person who wears the mask of Buddhism ...

I agree. Oh and that also, Buddhism isnt all about statues.

mrgreen
Yup, it is about playing with tables, chairs and books ... before burning pieces of paper and chanting gibberish while dancing around ... rofl
just joking, don't take it to heart ...
I like the one about playing with the tables and chairs lmao rofl
...Wait...but what do you mean about the "mask"? I have been trying to figure that out...but no answer came to me >_<" Im kinda starting to understand it though.

well even though i was brought up by my family to believe in buddhism(including aunts, uncles, and cousins) i still wound my way back to buddhism. i never really knew about it until a specific event triggered it^^ i believe it because it holds true to a lot of things and not because my family and a lot of people believed in it(lol for all i care i might have ended up believing another religion)

anime/manga is part of the reason i want to take japanese(even though i took french.....i never knew why... i think because my sister told me i should) but i have other reason likes i might want to live there if i ever decide to go there later on or that i can learn the cultures and make sure not to give something that would be considered as bad. it isn't based on anime^^ but there are some people who just go on and on about anime

Think of it as being an actor.

I was using a sociology term to describe how people relate to being a Buddhist.

We wear these "masks" every day - child, parent, student, friend, lover, employee, boss, etc. Each of these masks is different according to your situation and their application - like an actor with many costumes for different plays.

We put these "masks" on as part of our ego (yes, the bad one) so that we can feel as if we are that thing that we hide behind. We can wear whatever masks we like, but are we truly trying to be what the mask portrays, or are we just wearing the mask for the mask's sake?
