She quirked an eyebrow, unimpressed. "And yet a person's viewpoint may do more to increase your understanding as well. They may use a reference you never anticipated and that might aid you." Not to mention always being by oneself was a perfect recipe to create a cold, lonely adulthood. "Textbooks containing important information may be at too high a reading level, though I doubt that would be a problem here. Perhaps they use too much of their career's jargon."

A pause, and then, "For instance, if I were to say I thought Parvati So-and-such has case of cognitive dissonance brought on by true-believer syndrome, which could have been prevented by removing the influence of Pavlov's conditioning or perhaps a certain kind of homeopathy from her early domestic life, would you have a clue what I was talking about?"

"Professor, I believe you lost me as soon as you started talking again about whoever."

Micajah gave a slightly tired laugh, placing his hand now on his cheek and supporting his chin with his palm. He was still looking at Siona though his expression seemed a little more weary, like he was completely bored by the turn the conversation had took. The youth had absolutely no interest in how the brains of others worked - he didn't care about the reasoning behind their actions or anything like that. To Micajah actions spoke louder than any words or any diagnosis could, so to have this woman sit in front of him and go on about something-or-another....he was bored.

"Not to change the subject entirely, but can I ask why you're here Professor? Are you out to do some light shopping to prepare for classes, or did you just want to get a lay of the land and indulge yourself?"

She sighed, frustrated. "You are clearly a teenage boy," she said, meaning you are an arrogant jerk, though Siona remained pretty calm outwardly.

Accepting the subject change, she said, "Preparing for classes," though her tone was a bit shorter than she wanted it to be. "I suppose you're here to draw, so I won't ask."

"I'm actually here to watch people. Drawing is just a side hobby and it takes up the idle time in between. Since there's no cemetery here on the island the mall is the next best place to observe people and their interactions with one another. I'd prefer a cemetery though, since you can see the more honest and raw reactions people possess. Here...it seems kind of forced."

Back home he used to sneak out all the time and visit the local bone yards, his time spent lurkign behind tombstones whenever a funeral was being held to watch the emotions people displayed. There was such a range it was almost stunning, from people who looked utterly devastated to people who looked like they couldn't be more thrilled that such a person was dead and gone from their lives.

"A person can think all they want, but in the end don't we end up betraying our own thoughts with our bodies? I can be smiling at you but inside wishing you were dead, right? That's how different things can be."

She frowned. "Of course actions are an important part of determining how others act, but our words betray much also. You, for instance, show a profound belief in humanity's innate darkness in your words. I haven't yet had time to truly get to know you, but the way you speak and the words you use give the appearance of, and I use this word quite hesitantly and from a non-professional viewpoint, depression."

". . . I think you're mistaken somewhere along the way about me only liking the darkness in humans. I love people, all kinds of people. I just happen to hate adults, even more so ones who are judging me and giving me yet another diagnosis."

Micajah leaned back and closed his notebook, take a moment to smile brightly at Siona as if he had never seen her before in his life. It was easier just to think of her as a stranger now, someone who had just stepped over to his table and hadn't irritated him like she had, so he was able to create such a smile and expression without any difficulty.

"I prefer people who are my age or younger, you know? Not so set in their ways that they can't change and are ready and willing to make snap judgments on everything. Children are way better."

Siona couldn't help it. She laughed, outright, and didn't bother to speak until she had calmed herself down. "You learn very quickly that sometimes there just isn't room to change," she said, not unkindly. "We adults grew up in a very different time than you. Imagine, if you will, that you've grown up in a world that felt it was on top of everything, like nothing could go wrong, and then on one day everything that can go badly does. Many of my generation have, in my observation, chosen to protect everything that is theirs as best they can, or to give up entirely and let it all be free as the birds. Still others of us prefer to remain unattached to as much as we can."

A pause, and then she stood up and said very quietly, "If I were diagnosing you, I would have informed the Headmaster and allowed him to take action instead of me. Quite plainly, in simple-to-understand words, I also told you that I was using it simply because there is not another word I can use and trust that you will understand." With a faint, clearly meaningless smile, she skirted the table and left.

God, what a b***h.

Micajah frowned as he watched Siona depart after snapping at him, and he almost wanted to laugh in her face at her comment about telling the Headmaster his 'condition' and how he would be 'dealt' with. There wasn't much that could be done to and for Micajah, thanks to his files alone, and he wondered how much of a smack to the face that would be for the ever-prideful teacher.

As he gathered his own items in hand and rose to his feet, Micajah hoped inwardly he'd never have to see her again - which was very likely since he wasn't a Science student, and he turned and walked off towards the food court to get something to eat.

He needed to wash the taste of this bad encounter out of his mouth.

THE END
