It was Taigi who noticed just how late it was getting this time. The whispered "oh" that was the colt's reply, to both the stallion's statement and his own realization, stretched as far as his breath would allow, the hollowed trees later echoing it into the still night air. For a moment, Tai was even wary of the echo traveling along and catching one of his parents' ears. He stood still with his ears perked for any far off sounds, such as the crunch of fallen leaves and twigs or the 'whoosh' of a mane swinging about in the air.

Hearing nothing, he relaxed and gladly continued speaking to the interesting stallion, "so in other words, it's kinda like a safe haven for all of pure hearts?" He wondered whether he himself would be allowed there. Surely, but he saw how bright Laures' colors were in regard to his own. Wouldn't the others be bright and colorful rather than monotone and dark?

He tilted his head slightly and started to shrink to his smaller size-which often made it easier for him to think- as he considered how to answer the question. Having never really considered the story from anothers point of view, he was uncertain.

Taking to the air in this smaller form, he considered.

"Well, I guess it could be put like that. It is a safe haven, but there are those who as long as they aren't violent and don't disrupt the peace, are permitted to stay- if they are allowed by the Garden herself. No one knows how or why those who are chosen are. It seemes not so much the outward appearance, or even the outward emotions. She judges from the innermost soul.

It's not so much the heart, as the deep subconcious yearnings of ones soul. One can be ugly and twisted by the way they are treated, but if they harbor any kindness within, they are welcome. But they must first find the way. I believe that is the true test of one's measure. For even finding the path is near impossible, but once it's found, one must have the strength to walk it. To overcome any obstacles which stand in the way.

I get the feeling I'm close sometimes, that if I just reached out a little farther, then maybe one day, I would find my way there. Perhaps one day, you'll know this too."

He could feel the wind caressing his wings and calling him to continue on, on his journey. He flipped a few times and executed a few aerial dives. It wasn't quite time to say good-bye just yet.

The amazing transformation threw Taigi off, unfortunately. For this while, he forgot about the promising talk of the magical place dubbed "The Land of the Flutters". As Laures shrunk, Taigi's eyes widened, as if trying to make up for the lost size in the flutter. This has, of course, been the first flutter the colt'd seen, let alone the first transformation. "How do you do that...?" His question was spoken in a tone just above a low mutter. This brought new questions to his head, 'is his hearing worse?; better?... How does the world look from such a size?'

Seeing the butterfly actually spread his blue wings and take flight was something else all together. He gasped, thinking they'd surely falter, but continued to stare in awe as the stallion flittered about, making loops and dives in the air. The youngling's heart beat picked up its pace as a murmur of possible questions ran laps in his mind, running into each other and clogging his ears to a point where he couldn't tell one from another. Well, this was rather unfortunate as he wanted answers.

Tai gave his head a shake and everything became still one more. His heartbeat pulsed until it was at its norm once again. Then, with far more control over himself, he let a single question slither into his brain, wind around the nerves that'd allow him to speak it and left the rest to its nature, "how does it feel?"

"Hmmm?" Laures was confused for a second as to what the colt was talking about, then he realized he had transformed into his normal size. The size he felt was most comfortable. He laughed somewhat sheepishly.

"Umm, well...you see, Flutters are normally this size, the size of rather large butterflies, and well, to change size takes a good deal of concentration. I was exhausted from a long day of travel, and my wings hurt so I kinda shifted to the next most comfortable size so I wouldn't miss any time travelling."

If there was one thing he disliked more than being forced to change to an unnatural size, it was explaining the how's or why's, justifying his choices. He knew that there were other flutters who actually enjoyed changing form, and did so often and without any thought. He owed no explanation to anyone for his choice, but he couldn't not answer Taigi.

A few more flips and dives settled him enough that he would be able to answer without getting...pissy.

Well, that was interesting information. Taigi's ears were perked as if on a hunt to track down any possible scrap of a fact that escaped him. "So every flutter can do it? There aren't any exceptions?" Maybe the stallion was tiring of the colt's inquisitions, but since he wasn't exactly complaining, curiosity reigned.

"Is your hearing any different by any chance? I can adjust my voice if it is!" The foal figured that questions like these, that got him more information while showing a decent amount of concern for the stallion would get him even more knowledge about the newfound species. The concern was sincere, of course. And besides the "friendship" they formed, this was common courtesy.

Laures winced. This was another sore point to the Flutter. Others assumed that by changing size and shape, that other senses were affected. And thus they would talk down to him. He sighed deeply. Taigi was just a young colt, and probably didn't know better. He hoped that by answering these questions that perhaps others might learn and not make assumptions based on appearance.

"As far as I understand it, all flutters have this ability, yes. And our hearing and other senses do remain the same, regardless of what size we choose to be."

He was starting to get jittery now. This was about the longest he'd been able to stay with a single individual and answer questions. Normally, he would be telling stories or flying around doing tricks to entertain. He started to get an itch to travel onward, but he hated to be rude. He really hoped the colt would get tired of asking questions soon, freeing him to go on his way.

There was a new, somewhat annoyed edge to the stallion's voice now, and Taigi was left unsure. He hadn't thought himself annoying, naturally, but if Laures did, it would be wise to leave him to himself.

What time of night is this...?

This was the first time he'd realized the passage of time since he encountered the strange flutter. Upon looking about, Taigi could see the stars fading, the sky an indigo dusted with gray. "O-oh!!" Of course, the colt would much like to stay right where he was and ask questions, but his father would be cross to find him out without rest for an entire day. "Laures, the sun will soon rise and I'm sure I was supposed to be home quite a while back..." Oh, how he didn't want to depart. What if he never again met with his "friend"?

He hesitated for a moment, looking at the stallion unsurely. "Will we meet again?"

Trying not to seem rude, the flutter held back a sigh of relief. It had been a long night, and as dawn started to paint the sky, he was finally getting ready to travel onward.

It wasn't that he disliked the colt, or was really truly annoyed with him. He was merely impatient to get on with his adventure. He was ready to leave this place behind him. And given the fact that this little foal did have parents nearby that he should be getting back to... It was definately time to say good-bye.

Taigi's insecurity was endearing and the flutter knew he had found a good friend. He would see the foal again sometime. Of this he was certain. He nodded once.

"I'm sure we will meet again someday..."

Taigi stood there, taking in the never ending shimmer that swelled around the stallion's wings. They would meet again, Laures' word was enough for the colt to believe him. And when they met, one of them would have surely visited the Land of the Flutters.

The young Unicorn would also grow with time. Perhaps he would be the one to tell the stories with the coming of the second meeting. And there was always that slight chance that they would cross paths while Taigi was wandering on his own journey. Maybe.

But the irrevocable leave of the moon, accompanied by the sun's first rays reaching over the lands like gluttonous arms succumbing to their craving left him with no time. His father would be wondering about him. "Farewell, then. I hope you learn of many stories to tell me, as I will to you." And with a last, parting, sorrow-tinged grin, the foal turned about and leaped into the forest's thickets, his white-tipped lion's tail the last of him Laures would see -- for now.
