Alastor Cromwell The Mormons will pay for this, the book series known as Twilight, and their contributions in the Prop. 8 deal. Mormonism makes me angst almost as much as I angst about Scientology. Woah now- that's a bit extreme. I disagree with their beliefs, but I don't have anything against Mormons themselves. Don't turn this into a Mormon-bashing thread, please. (Cromwell, that's not directed towards you in particular by the way.) Divash: That makes a lot more sense. I still disagree with what they're doing, but it doesn't seem quite as hideously awful. (Note the quite. Not saying it isn't)

Those people lived and died as Jews. Baptising them is downright offensive.

I'm just simply not knowledgeable enough to discuss it. The same thing with Mormonism, actually.

Ha, I wasn't bashing even though it probably could be read as such. It's just seems like the Mormons keep giving me crap I can't stand these past couple weeks. :U I've got a couple of Mormon friends and they're great people; even they admitted how stupid they're being when I confronted them on this subject.

No spiritual efficacy? Are you out of your /mind/? This is an outright desecration that goes against so many Halachic laws that it's not even funny. It doesn't matter if someone 'stands in' for the dead, because it is /still/ a ritual of an idolatrous religion being performed with a dead Jew as its ultimate target.
As for sprinkling the water on graves. I /beg/ to differ. They did the s**t all the time up in NYC back when I lived in Brooklyn. I specifically remember one of Brooklyn's many 'neighborhood watch' gangs standing guard at the Boro Park cemetary to interdict the LDS missionaries that were flooding the place back in '94.
How any of you can excuse this baffles me entirely. These are people who died for their religious identity and another religion that Judaism views as idolatrous is performing the equivalent of witchcraft over their memory!

There's an old joke...
A Jew moves into a Catholic neighborhood, for years and years there has been disagreements with the Jew and his Catholic neighbors about him having brisket cholent on Friday nights. "Excuse me," his neighbors would ask, "We just want you to try to understand our faith a little better, maybe take communion, maybe do a confessional, understand us so you can better belong."
The Jew of course refuses, for several years he has the same Brisket Cholent on the same day when everyone else in town has fish.
However being a good sport, he invites the priest over for coffee to discuss 'Catholic conversion.'
The priest explains, "All I would have to do is tell you that you were a Jew, sprinkle you with holy water, and say that you were now a Catholic.
The Jew meditates on this and understands that this would shut everyone up if he went through with it.
So Sunday he goes to church, and gets baptized, much to the relief of the congregation.
Thursday rolls around he goes to the market, the Priest is there holding a lovely piece of haddock, and the Jew is still holding a brisket.
The priest says, "Now now, you're Catholic now, we eat fish on Fridays."
The Jew says, "not to worry, I'll convert it." The Jew goes to the water sprayer in the produce department. He holds his brisket under the water and says. "You were a brisket, and now you're a fish."
The point of this little anecdote is to point out that anyone can convert to anything, willingly or unwillingly, however the person still has to believe what their converting too. Otherwise, it's a waste of time and energy and all just for show to make the congregation happy.
Remember, once you're a Jew, you're always a Jew there is no excommunication, there is no way to become "unJewish"

I want to contribute here but I can't even organize my thoughts myself. Here's the big pile of crazy for ya:
-Part of me: Simply, every living creature deserves our respect
- More of me : I find that ritual awful and appauling beyond words, even beyond explatives.
- Little sliver of me: Do acknowledge that all deceased relatives who are not Mormons are baptized, not just Jews. Whether or not it has any bearing on your opinion, just remember that Jews are not specifically posthumously converted.

Unsure if it's been stated or not but Mormons believe that while you're in Purgatory a soul can discover the true and honorable faith that is Mormonism and thus convert. The Mormons that baptize these Jews and other souls believe that they've accepted Mormonism.
At least that's what I've read awhile back during my religious studies via internetz.

The only important thing to remember here is that their... slightly harshly said, Stxitxchxes... witchcraft... can do no harm to any souls, Jewish or otherwise.

Okay i used to have mormon friends until they tried to convert me while I was sleeping. And I found out that several of them hit women.
Fact is Mormons are total hypocrites. And if anybody has read their bibles, they are total contridiction of each other and fary tales.
They think Jews are native americans, and that Moses is from South America. There is a lot more, but I don't feel like typing all of it.
Oh wait, they are also have what they call magic underwear that they believe can save them from bullets. And it is full of free mason symbols.
And Joseph smith was a free mason.

There's nothing wrong with Free Masons unless you're a conspiracy theorist.

Generalizations are rude, uninformed and bother me a lot. They don't have "bibles"-they have the King James, one that says "Another Testament of Christ" right under the title, and a bunch of stories that get passed down as fact but...really, when you ask, you are told they aren't. They do not think Jews are from South America, nor Moses. They follow the same standard Bible as the rest of Christianity and additionally believe that Jesus spent time in America after he vacated the Middle East. Yes, lots in common with the Freemasons, and Joseph Smith was a Freemason. 'sall good. They don't call them Magic Underwear, (others do) and they don't freakin stop bullets. *sigh* I wasn't even on here to talk about Mormons. I wanted to know about the Israel/Palestine thing. *starts thread on that*
