[Solo Banner] The tabula Zero proved very swiftly to the servants to be a bit of a handful, not because he was trouble. Rather, Zero tended to follow anyone who would noticed him. From simple house servants doing laundry to gardeners, to page boys carrying messages for their masters and ladies, Zero was seemingly always a step behind, bombarding the hapless person with questions in broken sentences: "What doing?" "Why?" "Who for?" "Zero can help!" This last was used both as a question and as a proclamation. Sometimes it worked out -- maids carrying heavy, unwieldy loads of laundry were too happy to let Zero juggle the load. Courtiers and pages, on the other hand, either wished the tabula was more discreet or not even there at all. It wasn't long before this came to the attention of those looking after the tabula. As quick as two shakes of a cat's whisker, Zero was assigned a hapless acolyte to teach him the basics of grammar and writing. Zero shifted in the chair the acolyte made him sit in, trying to get comfortable. But he was told to sit here and listen as the nervous teacher puttered on about the uses and advantages of good grammar and how it would be Very Useful and Important. He eyed the wax tablet in front of him. He was told that until he learned his letters, he had to make do with scratching them in the wax. Zero decided he liked it -- he could make fun little marks and if he didn't like it, he just had to rub it out! It was great! "No! Nono, Zero! You can't make an 'A' like that!" The acolyte chided, taking the stylus from the tabula. "It's like this, see? You draw a line like this, and then like this... and then a smaller line here! It stands on two feet and has a little bridge, see?" "Oooh! Zero see! But, um, what bridge? Why these ones round?" Hopefully the acolyte remembered to bring some medicine for the headache he was about to have. REWARDS: -1 XP -100 paise

[Solo Banner] Zero stretched, yawning as he left the makeshift classroom. He liked the classes, and wished that the acolyte didn't shoo him out for a nap after each one. At least his lessons were progressing well. Zero took everything at face value, practicing his letters again and again until he could recreate them with precision a scholar would be proud of. His spelling, however, was something to be desired. Thankfully, that was for another day after the acolyte restocked his herbs. He whistled happily as he walked through the tabula-friendly hallways, offering a smile here and there to servants who either returned the smiles with one of their own or ignored him altogether. The acolyte had told him that helping people was okay, but doing it all the time wasn't. People could then take "advantage" of you which isn't nice and is really quite rude and... Zero didn't want to admit it, but he started to lose interest and somewhat ignored what the acolyte was saying. Oops. Zero was bored. Normally he would try to go to where the hounds were kept, but going near them usually sent the dogs into a barking frenzy upon seeing their '"friend" of sorts. But such a thing was very noisy, and not everyone appreciated the barking and baying of a hunting hound, especially if some noblemen were planning to go hunting that day. Instead, he wandered towards the stables. Zero wasn't sure of himself around the horses -- they were so BIG! Nearly as large as him, and added to that... well, the area tended to be busier, and the busier the area, the more likely he would be shooed out and away. Not today, however. The stable master crossed his arms, looking down on a stableboy with disapproval. "Wot do you mean Johnny's sick?" He demanded, " 'e looked just fine yesterday!" "I dunno sah. 'e wasn't lookin' too good," he replied, cringing. "Well, the stables aren't going to get themselves cleaned," the stable master replied, pausing. "Oi you! Yeah, snow-hair! C'm 'ere." Zero blinked in surprise, then hurried over. "Hi! You ask Zero?" "Yeah, yeah, wotever. Mmm, ye're about the same size as Jonny... ye're the same one that's been askin' around to help, right?" "Ah... Zero think so? Zero not do that lately, Zero was told it was rude and -" The stable master waved his excuse away, pulling the tabula to stand next to the stable boy present. "Mmm, ye're roughly the same size... H'okay! Lend, er, Zero here some of your old clothes, boy, and git to cleanin' the stables. Zero here will help, won't he?" "Er, yes?" The tabula blinked, and before he knew it he had a set of spare clothes and something to occupy him for the rest of the day. Now he understood what his teacher was trying to get through to him: if you know what's good for you, look busy or be prepared to spend the entire day working, only to earn a bath at the end. Zero hunched over the wax tablet, carefully mimicking the (somewhat) neat etches of his tutor. Slowly, he was starting to see how useful this 'writing' business was. Each letter made its own sound (well not really, you had to supply the specific sound yourself), and combined they made words which in turn was like holding a conversation with someone but it was just yourself and really someone else was just talking to you and depending on how big or small the letter was it made a louder or softer sound.
At least, that's what his previous tutor managed to get into him before they had to leave. Zero raised his head to take a peek at the new acolyte sitting near him, nose in a book. She was... well, more relaxed than the other, he noticed. The other kept walking back and forth and wringing his hands, trying to keep his eyes on the tabula at all times.
Zero bit his lip, returning his gaze to the wax before him. He didn't do anything to upset him... did he? The stablemaster mentioned something about a badger stuck in him somewhere, while his friend the stableboy (Nigel, he remembered. Nigel was rather helpful when he first helped out the stables, though lately more and more Nigel's been sitting back and watching Zero and only helping when the stablemaster checked on them... He'd need to talk to someone about that. Should he be sitting idle too or...?) shrugged and said that some people were like that.
An itch broke his thoughts, giving him respite and a chance to focus on the task in front of him: write the sentence again and again, small enough so it only took up one line of wax. If the letters were too big, it wouldn't fit. He was supposed to be Neat and Accurate.
The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy brown dog. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy brown dog. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy brown dog. The quick WYTE TABYULA jumps over the lazy brown dog.
He grinned to himself, then quickly rubbed his etching away to rewrite it correctly. It wouldn't be Nice or Polite or even Right to not do what he was asked! It just didn't suit well with him, and... well, what would happen if he didn't do it right? Zero shook his head and dropped the thought. He liked doing what others asked him to do. It made people smile, which made Zero want to smile back which in turn... in turn...
The tabula paused, stylus raised. His former teacher didn't smile much, did he? His blue eyes focused on his new teacher, calmly reading her book. Well, here goes nothing... Zero cleared his throat. "Um, excuse me..."
He waited until she had marked her place and set the book down, giving him her Full Attention (at least that's what he was told she did when he learned a little Ettiquite). "I... I didn't do anything bad, did I? With the other one, I mean. He's not here and, well, I think... I think I made him go away, and I didn't mean it?" He bit his lip, watching her.
Her response surprised him: she laughed. "Zero, Alim isn't used to teaching with so many questions!" She laughed again, "You remind me of my morning class -- all bright-eyed and non-stop with questions. No wonder their parents wish school lasted longer!" The woman, Haniya, stood up and stood next to Zero, patting his shoulder. "No wonder Alim warned me to be prepared for headaches! Tsk! Here, Zero, why don't we work on spelling for a bit? Letters need to be in a specific order to form words, but not all letters are pronounced. Let's take a look at this word here..."

The metal was warm from resting on his wrist, not cold like he expected the silver to be. Zero sat on his bed, turning the bangle Tanee gave him at her color seminar around and around in his hands. "Blue," he repeated to himself softly, studying the colored stone on it. Blue and green, those were his favorite colors. His.
Zero slid the bangle back onto his wrist and twisted it this way and that. His arm now felt notably heavier with the unfamiliar weight, so he shifted it to the other arm. No good -- the feeling remained, save for it was on his other wrist. It was so odd, so unusual to the point that Zero considered hiding it somewhere. But... He reached down his shirt and fished out his key: pure white, it made the bangle look duller in comparison. It was softer, and... Zero lifted the chord that held the key around his neck up and over his head, comparing the items side by side. Both were gifts, both were his. It felt... well, wrong to consider leaving one behind. Why should he prefer one over the other? He replaced his key and slid the bangle back onto his wrist, regarding it. He'd have to get used to the weight sometime... or switch between arms to figure out which is more comfortable. Yes, that was it!
Feeling better, Zero stood up and went to do what Tanee said to do: wear his favorite color! He went to a simple cedar trunk and opened it, pulling out garments that Locke had managed to find for the tabula. Most were hand-me-downs from the castle servants, patched here and there and still in serviceable condition. Personally, Zero liked these a lot! Sometimes they were soft and comfortable to move around in, even if some had blotches of faded colors on them (Tanee would disapprove of those, he was sure). Sometimes some of the outfits still had rips and tears that hadn't been patched or mended yet, or did Zero put those there himself?
The tabula stopped upon reaching the bottom of the trunk, sorting out the blues and greens from the mess. He was surprised to find out he had enough to make a couple outfits of the colors, but... he eyed a long piece of fabric, barely wider than his hand outstretched. That wouldn't be good to wear outside his room, if he remembered the blushes and hasty reprimands he received when he first did such an act. He would need to ask someone who knew about clothes later, possibly his friend Nigel the next time he helped him out or Haniya when he went for lessons. Maybe even Tanee, if she was around?
He regarded the clothes he had removed and rejected from his blue-and-green-only search. Quietly and quickly, he grabbed the nearest article and attempted to fold it back to its former neat semblance before replacing it in the trunk. Sure green and blue were his favorite colors, but it was okay to wear other colors once in awhile... right?
