Sneaky pulls a very tired Nusumu towards the udonya. It has been a long day for the both of them, and Sneaky suspects that a bit of food that Nusumu doesn't have to cook would be good for both of them. The last time Nusumu cooked dinner in this condition, she used strawberry jam instead of tomato paste and chocolate truffles instead of meatballs. Of course, that made for a very interesting meal in its own right, but a repeat performance might not go so well.

Nusumu actually has to lean on Sneaky in order to make it down the street. She was called in to work in the kitchen that day, and has been on her feet for several hours. She doesn't even want to look at a plate of food right now, much less make or eat one.

She lets Sneaky tow her along, however, for a different reason. Perhaps if they go to the udonya, there will be friends there. Of course, her fingers are crossed for a specific person... but then, she's feeling surprisingly open-minded today.

Mengde half-skipped along the roadside carelessly, his face and robes robes smudged with a generous helping of dirt, his normally neatly-kept hair fluttering about wildly. His coronet cap looked to be in extreme danger of falling off, though the little porcelain seemed not to notice or care. Instead, he seemed more interested in the large twisted stick in his hand, whose end that was not held in his grasp trailed rather noisily down the ways. He seemed to enjoy the racket he was making, as all small children seem to do.

Turning a corner, the little boy stopped, blinking at the sight that greeted him. Some person and... what was THAT thing? He wanted to see! Still allowing the stick to clatter behind him, he approached the girl and her funny-thing curiously, eyes wide with unabashed interest. Hello. What was the funny thing?

Nuusmu's eyes, which had been drifting shut, snap open. What on earth is all that racket, and why is it disturbing Nusumu from taking a nap? scream

Normally, Sneaky does not bother telling Nusumu about the wisdom of her ideas. This time, however, the Raptor takes the chance to tell her that taking a nap on a stranger's stoop might not be the best idea, even with Sneaky there to protect her. There are too many things that could happen.

Mmm. Sneaky is right. Nusumu waves half-heartedly at the boy, somewhat disappointed that he isn't someone else. But she is still happy to see him in her own way, even if she hasn't got the slightest clue who he is.

Sneaky smiles, baring a mouth full of pointy teeth. Sneaky is Sneaky, not funny looking. In her opinion, Porcelain look extremely funny, but she hasn't pointed that out in a very long time. She has too many little Porcelain friends.

... of course, most of those friends are bigger than her now. But this little one is still little. A wistful feeling washes over Sneaky, and she bends down. Would the little Porcelain like a ride?

Mengde, not at all disturbed or worried at cranky lady snapping about naps, grinned broadly and waved enthusiastically at her. Hello! Was his stick loud? Sorry. He could not help that the stick was loud. Look! Wasn't it a nice stick?

Proud of his findings, he held up the ugly gnarled thing, like a knight presenting his sword. He found it himself by the water place! He was going to show it to tall Mister Vickon, and... A RIDE?! He gaped at Silly-looking Sneaky, eyes wide, mouth agape. Could he really? Really really? He liked this Sneaky!

Sneaky is not silly looking, she insists. However, she would be happy to give this small one a ride. She used to give Nusumu rides when she was smaller, but now her Nusumu is too big for that.

Not as big as she should be, in theory, Nusumu replies grumpily. Reaching into a pocket of the apron she is still wearing, she pulls out a small flask and opens it. There is the scent of lemon and orange, mixed with eucalyptus and pine. The smell helps Nusumu feel a little more awake, and she looks more carefully at the small Porcelain. For a moment, she is also wistful. She misses riding around on Sneaky's tail... but if she tried that now, the tail would probably break off. sweatdrop

Her eyes then drift to the stick. It is a very nice stick. A very, very nice stick. ninja Would the boy mind telling Nusumu where he found it?

Turning around so her back is to Mengde, Sneaky bends down again. If he holds on to her back, and puts his feet on her tail, that should work. As long as he isn't scared. >.>

Mengde's eyes lit up at the confirmation of a ride. Again, really? Oh boy! Oh, what, the stick? He found it by the water place with all the smooth rock! Tall Mister Vickon had let him go out today, so when Mengde got home he was going to show off this finding. Maybe he could show Nusumu-person the place later? He wanted to go for a ride now!

No, he wasn't scared. He was Mengde, brave and fierce! The little porcelain puffed out his narrow chest at his boast, before setting the stick down and scrambling up onto Sneaky's back as best he could. Was he supposed to sit like this?

Hmph. Well, Sneaky approves of brave and fierce people, since she is brave and fierce herself! She wonders why no one else seems to notice this- Sneaky is the picture of ferocity, after all- but clearly the small one and her have something in common. Yes, he is- oof!- fine.

Perhaps Mengde is a tad heavier than she anticipated. But not one to go back on a promise, Sneaky begins to run, going in circles and zigzags and occasionally leaning to one side or another. She wants to make this fun for the both of them.

Nusumu watches with some sadness, but pushes it away impatiently. Yes, there were things that she misses from when she was smaller. But now there are things that she can only do like this, things that she couldn't do when she was little.

Like do a job she hates? Sneaky asks privately, still dashing around the area next to the shop. There are other ways that Nusumu can get things that she needs-

Sneaky is NOT HELPING. stare

Whenever the ride is over, Nusumu would like to see this water place. It sounds nice... and more importantly, filled with pretty things that no one would mind her taking. ninja

For the entirety of the ride, Mengde let out what felt like a never-ending stream of silent shrieks and giggles. This was FUN! He wanted a Sneaky! Sneaky was the most fun person-thing ever for letting him ride! He was mildly disappointed when the ride was over, though his face was flushed and his small hat looked dangerously close to falling off. After dismounting, Mengde picked up his stick and slung it proudly over his shoulder. Thank you Sneaky!

Oooh, did Nusumu-person want to see the water place? Okay, but it was a bit of a walk outside the town. They had to pass through a big park, which also had fun things. But the water place had funny-looking fish. Mengde wanted some, but he wasn't allowed int he water and couldn't reach the fish. He must devise a way to catch one!

Anyways... yes. Would Nusumu and Sneaky like to come? He would be glad to show them!

As Sneaky lets Mengde down, she grins widely- not an entirely comforting sight, truth be told. Little one has excellent taste. Sneaky would be happy to give him another ride anytime. As long as he is still this little, anyway. Any bigger, and she would probably pull a muscle. sweatdrop

Would Nusumu like to go, then? Sneaky is also curious about this place.

Nusumu caps and pockets the bottle, then stands and shakes some dust out of her robes. Yes, she would like to see this place, if Mengde-person would not mind taking her and Sneaky there. It doesn't appear that there is anyone in the udonya to keep them there.

At the mention of fish, she smiles slyly. She and Sneaky might be able to help catch one. Or more than one. Catching things is one of their specialties!

Sneaky laughs silently in agreement. Yes, let them get fish!

O-KAY, then! It was decided! Tot he water place it was! Smiling broadly at the thought of bringing new friends along to see it, Mengde began to trot off, the stick once again slumping to drag noisily behind him. What? It was heavy!

Would they really be able to help catch a fish? Specialties? What were their other ones, aside form Sneaky's fun rides? Could Mengde do any of them? He didn't have many specialties of his own... yet. He would, though! After all, he was going to rule a mighty army when he was big! It would be fun and they would go on grand adventures. Sneaky and Nusumu must come along too, for they were his friends!

Nusumu and Sneaky follow, exchanging an amused glance as Mengde tells them about his dreams. They have definitely found a good one here.

They have many specialties, Nusumu explains. For example, Nusumu likes to cook. Well, maybe not right now. But she usually likes to cook, especially cakes, and many Porcelain have said that they were very good. Sneaky is good at giving rides, of course. But their true specialty is... a secret! ninja

At that, Sneaky seems surprised. It is? Since when?

Since Nusumu is talking to someone who doesn't know, and is trying to put some flair into this. stare

But if Mengde wants to know, he has to promise not to tell anyone. It's a secret!

Mengde listened as he trotted along, awed at Nusumu's skill. Ooh. Could Nusumu-person hopefully maybe please make him a cake sometime? He would like to try one very much! She was probably the bestest cook in the whole wide world! Because she was Nusumu! Well, that made sense to him, at least.

Ooh? What was Sneaky's sneaky specialty? The small boy was nearly hopping up and down in excitement as he gazed in awe at the raptor. What? What? Of course he wouldn't tell! Not even tall Mr. Vickon! Of course their secret would be very safe indeed with him.

Nusumu would certainly make Mengde a cake sometimes! Very few things make her happier than someone enjoying something she has put hard work into making. She is a little awed by his confidence in her, but folds her arms and strikes a pose. It is times like these that make her remember why she really does like to cook. And Nusumu will make Mengde the best cake ever! whee

Sneaky had better get a piece of that then. >.>;

As to the secret, she will let Nusumu tell it. Largely because she has no idea what she's trying to do with the elaborate setup.

Hmph. Ignoring Sneaky, Nusumu leans down, so she can look Mengde in the eyes. Nusumu and Sneaky's secret specialty (not that it's secret to anyone who knows them, really) is the art of the sneaky. ninja Being sneaky is not just for Sneaky, it is a whole lifestyle. And it is fun, too!

Now, Mengde might wonder what is so special about sneaking around. The answer is that it means you can do things without other people seeing you. Like sneaking out after bedtime. Or sneaking another slice of cake. Or- and this is most important- sneaking things. Nusumu and Sneaky are very good at sneaking things.

Personally, Sneaky thinks that being sneaky also means not spilling their trade secrets to strangers, however cute they might be. But she will let it slide this time. Mengde has a good mindset for it, at least.

Oh boy! Mengde couldn't wait for Nusumu's cake now!

As the secret was unveiled, Mengde brought his free hand to cover his mouth, which hung wide open. Really? Cool! As Nusumu explained it, he could only nod in reverence to the sneaky. That sounded so useful! He would love to try and sneaky out after bedtime some time. He didn't like being made to go to bed early. Yuck!

So absorbed was he in the conversation that the little porcelain barely noticed that they were nearly there. Until the large cement structure of Durem's reclamation facility came into view, that is. Oh lookit! That was the big square rock place that had the water!

Then Nusumu will start to plan it soon. Does Mengde have any favorite flavors? Nusumu would not want to make a cake he would not like.

Sneaky is the ultimate way of life! And Mengde seems to get the idea quite well. Nusumu did not want to go to sleep early either, even these days, though- she yawns -sometimes sleep wanted her early.

Sneaky nods, not really having anything to contribute. At the sight of the Reclamation Facility, however, she stops and stares. THIS is the water place?

Nusumu also pauses to look, but doesn't see anything wrong. It's a big block full of water, like a swimming pool, right?

Perhaps, but Sneaky really wouldn't go in the water here if she didn't have to. She has heard weird stories about the water, and about the fish.

Favorite flavor? Mengde pondered that question briefly. He didn't really have a favorite... Hm. Did Nusumu and Sneaky like strawberry? He must pick a flavor all three liked, otherwise he couldn't share proper!

Yes, this was the place! Oh, so Sneaky has heard of the weird fish? They are weird! Mengde saw one once when he was walking along the square rock edge and looking into the water. Sometimes he would throw pebbles in, but the water was very deep because he could never see the bottom. It was a fun place! And he found his stick right near here!

Strawberry is one of Nusumu's favorite flavors! And Sneaky likes it as well. Nusumu has many recipes for strawberry cakes, she will pick out a super duper special one!

So this is the water place after all? Nusumu eyes it suspiciously, then shrugs. It is not what she expected it to be, but if it has great big sticks and weird fish, then it can't be all that bad.

Sneaky disagrees, but if Nusumu and the little one want to explore, fine. Sneaky will watch out, and be there in case anything happens.

Nothing will happen, Nusumu insists. And, she adds privately to Mengde, sometimes Sneaky worries too much. But she does feel somewhat safer knowing that Sneaky will be there, watching their backs. It is always good to have a lookout when you are trying to be Sneaky.

So, has Mengde tried to catch any of the fish? Nusumu is loathe to go in the water, especially if it is as deep as Mengde says. She isn't sure she can swim. But there must be other ways.

No, Mengde couldn't reach the fish. The water is lower than the edge of the rocks, and farther down than Mengde's arm. He'd jump in, but he couldn't swim, and he wouldn't be able to reach the edge to pull himself up anyways. Maybe if they had brought a rope...?

As he took a minute to think this over, the sun began to sink, something which Mengde could not help but frown irritably at. Drat! Mengde is sorry, but he should probably be heading home now. Supper was going to be soon, and he didn't want to get into trouble for being late. Did Nusumu and Sneaky remember the way back? It was just down the path, and they would go to town.

Mengde was disheartened to leave, but they would have to meet up again next time! He rather liked Nusumu and Sneaky! They were both very fun. Starting down the path home, he waved vigorously at the pair. Bye! Maybe next time they would be able to have more adventures!

It is a trouble, that is for sure, but Nusumu thinks that if they think, they can solve it. Although finding some more materials would be useful too. sweatdrop

Awww... Nusumu is disappointed to see Mengde go. But it is getting dark, and she wouldn't want him to have to find his way home alone in the dark. Besides- she yawns yet again, the effects of the oils she used earlier wearing off- she is quite tired already. Perhaps it's best that they call it a day.

Sneaky watches carefully as Mengde leaves, waving back. It is always refreshing to see youth with their minds in the right place!

Nusumu also waves, though somewhat more sedately, as she is saving what strength she has left to get home. She is already running through recipes in her mind, trying to pick the perfect one. Sneaky has to drag her away, but she does manage to get moving before she falls asleep standing up.

Nusumu didn't even consider that she was going to pass the udonya when she planned this excursion. Her real destination was supposed to be a new restaurant in town. But as she approaches, she realizes that if she is at the udonya, she is probably lost. Quite lost.

Following a short distance behind, Sneaky is not pleased at being dragged out of the house on a chilly day such as this. She is cold-blooded, or has Nusumu forgotten? As it is, she is wearing an oversized fur-lined hat complete with earflaps, a mutilated pair of mittens, and three scarves. One is blue with white stars, another is red with green dots, both are wrapped around Sneaky's neck and body several times. The last is rainbow-striped, and so long that a couple of inches trail on the ground as they trudge along.

If they are lost, Sneaky will be VERY angry. stare

They aren't lost! Nusumu insists, rubbing her own gloved hands together. She just... she just needs a moment to get her bearings, that's all.

Hisame, for the first time since he had come here, was actually not lost as he made his way down the street towards the udon-ya. He was heading to that strange place with a purpose in mind, mostly dealing with a few questions about this strange race that he kept seeing everywhere now thanks to that once chance encounter he had. It was almost like he was marked now, not that he actually felt that way, but he did want to know a few things if these encounters were going to keep occurring - it was important that he know what to do so he wouldn't actually offend a whole race.

"If I'm not mistaken, I turned here and then took a few mo- "

He stopped, dead in his tracks and dead in his sentence, as two figures came into view before him. One he recognized as that strange race - the Porcelain, but the other...what was it?!

Sneaky spots the stranger first, and points one mittened hand at him. They should ask him for directions! Otherwise, they might wander around until nightfall. gonk

Privately, Nusumu agrees. But asking for directions meant admitting that she was lost, and she isn't ready to do that. Insisting to Sneaky that she has everything under control, she simply waves to Hisame and sits down on the front step of the udonya, trying to think where she had turned wrong.

It isn't that Sneaky doesn't believe Nusumu. But cranky Raptors don't like being told to wait. Shaking her head, she takes a few steps closer to Hisame, wondering if he will be able to hear her. Her attempts at conversing with humans have had mixed results. Still, it does not hurt to try.

Hello! Does the strange man know where this is?

At first it sounded like a small echo in his mind, almost like a buzz, and Hisame lifted his gaze to look at the figures before him once again as he'd swept his eyes downward for a moment to inspect the pavement. He had always been reading when he came here so he'd learned the way by watching his feet, and since it all seemed the same to him he figured he knew where he was.

That being said, he didn't understand what the raptor was saying to him. Being that Hisame was the type of person to do martial arts he had a rather thick skull thanks to meditation and focus, so the only thoughts he was receiving echoed into his mind like a buzz instead of as actual words.

"Is there something you need?"

Hisame wasn't sure as to what this...person(?), thing (?) was, but it was probably in his best interest to be polite.

Well, at least this one knows how to be polite, even if he is a little dense. It doesn't seem that he understands her, so Sneaky goes and drags Nusumu over, standing her in front of Hisame. Ask for directions, or Sneaky is going home. >.>

Nusumu fights Sneaky the whole way, and retorts that Sneaky couldn't find her way back home anyway. But she is in front of him now, and she supposes that asking him would be quicker than figuring it out by herself. And it doesn't mean that she can't figure it out. Because she can, if she wants to.

Of course she can, Sneaky reassures her. Now ASK.

Yes, Nusumu will ask. She waves again, then begins to project. If Hisame gets anything, it won't be actual words so much as feelings and images and half-formed thoughts. Nusumu and Sneaky were on their way to a restaurant, she tries to explain, and they got turned around. This was not the restaurant that they were looking for. Even though the big Porcelain here must know that she is not stupid, as some other restaurants have claimed, she doubts he needs help to maintain such a small establishment.

But perhaps Nusumu has said more than she needs to. What she wants to know is simple: does this man know how to get into town? confused

[Paused here, tbc? Probably not XD;]

Yousei approaches the udon-ya, a pensive look set on her pale features. She hopes Setsushi will be there, as she has some questions for him -- but then again, she hasn't stopped by in a while, and his hours have always been a little inconsistent.

"Will you hurry?" Came Ren'i's slightly whiney voice as he tried to urge Tsubei to move faster, nearing the udon-ya. He still didn't understand why he had to have Tsubei with him. He had gotten a lot stronger since he came here to this strange place....in fact, he was a true warrior! (okay, maybe not...just a teensy bit healthier) Still, he was a bit concerned that she barely got away from the house except to go to her greenhouse....and that one time when she wandered into town with Yaruka. Maybe this trip would be good for her.

He carried his small violin in its case, along with the practice book so he could show others (if they were there) what he was learning.

Tsubei is fine. She will catch up to Ren'i in a bit.

Tsubei was quiet throughout the trip, looking thoughtful as she carried a much smaller basket than usual. In it, were just a few things she wanted with her; a small sketchbook, a tennis ball, and a pinwheel. Odd items, as one might think, but each had a purpose. She was thinking deeply, looking off into the sky every so often as she carefully kept her thoughts to herself. Lest anyone know what she was thinking of....well, it was best to be kept as her own.

Yousei turns, one hand on the doorknob, and easily spots the two approaching Porcelain. They stand out so much, she thinks, looking down at herself. All of them do, even now.

Maybe especially now.

She thinks she needs it that way, though. She's pretty sure she dresses herself purposefully to stand out, puts on the makeup like a symbol.

She raises her hand in weak wave to both of them, pushing the stray thoughts from her mind.

Nusumu wonders if Setsushi will be at the udon-ya as she nears it, but doesn't worry about it too much. Her reasons for visiting today are twofold; if he is not there, perhaps she will at least get some other things accomplished. She carries a basket as well, fairly large and covered with a blue flowered cloth.

Although Nusumu has insisted that she does not need a chaperon for this visit, Sneaky has also insisted on coming. And so she has, wearing her three scarves and gloves and carrying a small cloth bag. She attempts to grab at Nusumu's basket, but is batted away each time. No fair! Sneaky didn't get any yet!

Sneaky will get some when they are there, Nusumu retorts, spotting the figures already gathered. Two of them look quite familiar. Yousei she has already seen recently, and the other... must be Tsubei! Nusumu waves, sending greetings and a hint of curiosity at the Porcelain she has not yet met.

Tsubei looked up at the shop to see a familiar face, which made her smile a bit. She waved to Yousei and sent her gentle greetings, then felt a third party. She turned to see Nusumu, smiling much brighter and waving with more enthusiasm. She sent her greetings to her. She hadn't seen either of them for quite some time.

Still, something about Yousei made her worry. She didn't seem like her usual self and she would ask if something was wrong.....later. For now, she enjoyed the meeting of old friends.

Ren'i stopped when he saw another Porcelain at the shop door and he sent out a polite, if dry, greeting. He then sent one out to the other person that was approaching, also introducing himself. He shifted a bit closer to Tsubei, a bit uncomfortable with strangers.

Yousei smiles at Nusumu's arrival, and shakes off the remainder of her mood, pushing it to the back of her mind. Seeing Ren'i's hesitance, she gives him a little grin and holds out her hand, palm up.

Does he want to see a coin trick?

Nusumu runs the rest of the way to the door of the udon-ya, Sneaky close behind. She is out of breath when she gets there, even though it was not very far. She is a bit tired today.

Not knowing any of these Porcelain all that well, Sneaky resorts to tugging at the basket. They are there, can she have some now?

Not if she keeps bugging Nusumu about it. stare

Trying to ignore Sneaky's repeated attempts to get into her basket, she greets everyone again. This time, however, she is more cautious about Ren'i, greeting him politely and watching him out of the corner of her eye. How has Tsubei been? It has been so long since Nusumu has seen her! And Yousei as well. They only got to see each other briefly the last time... and maybe Nusumu was a bit distracted. sweatdrop

Nusumu would love to see a coin trick, if this new boy does not. She did not know that Yousei could do magic! surprised

A coin trick? Ren'i raised an eyebrow and looked up at Yousei cautiously. She seemed like she was an ordinary girl...but what if secretly...

Is this one some kind of sorceress? Ren'i wants to see the coin trick!........oh....please? He had almost forgotten his manners.

Tsubei smiled and remained by Ren'i to give him a bit of comfort. She was sure that he would end up liking her friends as much as she did, turning to smile at Nusumu and her dinosaur guardian.

Tsubei has been alright. It has been a very long time and she missed Nusumu a lot...and everyone else, too. She smiled sweetly as she fixed a stray hair back in place. She was curious about the basket, but she would ask later.

"How have you been, Nusumu?" Her voice as still soft, but she found she was able to speak with a much better flow to her words and a lot more ease.

Yousei reaches her hand into the worn messenger bag hanging at her side, rummaging around for a coin. She draws it out, holding it between the fingers of her right hand. It glints dully in the light from the shop. Then, smoothly, she appears to have taken the coin into her left hand, curling her fingers around it. Her right hand reaches into the bag for another coin, which she presents for the boy to see. Then, it looks as if she has dropped that one into her left hand as well, and a tinny "clink" can be heard as it joins the other.

She holds out both fists before the boy, and opens her left with a flourish. Her palm is empty.

Nusumu blinks a little, still not wholly used to Porcelain speaking aloud, but pushes her thoughts aside quickly. It is simply something more to think about later. She is glad that Tsubei is doing well, and she missed Tsubei and everyone else very much too! Nusumu is doing okay. A little bit tired, definitely wanting to do something different during the day, but good. And she has something special! whee

Sneaky almost roars with impatience. NOW? scream

Paying no attention to Sneaky's tantrum, Nusumu peers eagerly at Yousei's trick, and positively boggles when the coins seem to have vanished. That is amazing! Nusumu is very impressed! 3nodding

eek Where have they gone?! Have they been turned into air or did they fall into some portal like he did? His questions were eager as he looked all around Yousei's hands, finding no evidence that she was actually hiding the coins. This was highly unheard of! He had never seen such things, only heard about them in stories told of mad sorcerers. He peered up at Yousei.

"Did your chaos take them and hide them? That's cheating!"

Tsubei smiled to Nusumu and to Sneaky, giggling at the dino's tantrum and at Ren'i's playful accusations. When he wasn't being so serious and grumpy, he really was an adorable little boy. She knew that it was all an illusion, but she would not spoil the boy's surprise. She just watched with mild fascination, for she had never been able to do something like that.......but she was finally able to do something almost as amazing.

Ah, wait, wait. Yousei thinks she might know where they are. She holds her right hand, still fisted, before the young boy, and uncurls her fingers. There, in her palm, are the two silver coins, which she holds out for him. His, if he'd like them.

Yousei smiles as convincingly as she can. She doesn't have a chaos -- it's really just very simple magic. Doesn't he believe her?

She gives Tsubei a look and all but winks at her before turning to Nusumu. Ah, something special? Yousei is eager to see what it might be! And, come to think of it, Tsubei looks like she might be hiding a Something Special as well.

Nusumu's shock is even more evident as Yousei uncurls her fist. She, like Tsubei, knows that it is trickery as opposed to real magic. But to her, that is even more wonderful. Making things appear differently than they are is an important part of being sneaky. Maybe Nusumu should be practicing more. She is a bit rusty with such things.

As Yousei mentions the basket, she pats it smugly. She failed to notice Tsubei's basket, and now that she does, she is curious about its contents. But until Tsubei is ready to reveal, she would be happy to share hers. It is one of the reasons she is here!

Smiling nervously, Nusumu peels the cloth back to reveal a pile of cookies. They are in all sorts of Christmasy shapes, wreathes and trees and stars and ornaments and candy canes and gingerbread men, and each is decorated with red or green or white frosting and sprinkles. Some designs repeat, and the icing is somewhat sloppily executed, but they probably taste good enough.

This is only practice, Nusumu explains. She wanted to make a set of X-mass cookies before X-mass, so that the real ones would come out perfectly. She would love it if Tsubei and Yousei and the boy would try them and tell her what they think, so that she can improve.

Before anyone else can move, Sneaky reaches into the basket and pulls out a heaping handful of cookies. She gets extra for being patient, she declares, beginning to devour them one after another.

Ren'i smiled and clapped appreciatively for the trick. It was amazing to him and that was good enough. He looked at her suspiciously, but he took the coins and inspected them closely. They were real....this was unheard of! It defied all logic! He would demand to know more from Yaruka. He thanked the girl for her trick and bowed in respect to her skill.

eek Cookies??

He looked over to Nusumu's basket and walked over to inspect them. They looked delicious, even if their icing wasn't perfect. Who was he to judge? He did not really know much about this 'X-mass' thing Nusumu was talking about. Perhaps Tsubei and Yaruka could shed some light on it.

"May I have one, please?" He asked politely.

Tsubei returned the hidden wink to Yousei with a smile, looking up at Nusumu as she revealed the contents of her basket. She smiled, happy to try them and then she showed the rather unimpressive contents; the sketchbook, the ball and the pinwheel.

Tsubei has been practicing something special with these things. She may be able to demonstrate to them all.

She took out the pinwheel and held it up to see which way the wind blew....just for good measure.

Yousei smiles at him, and takes a cookie from Nusumu as well, nibbling on it slowly. Her attention is caught by the mysterious contents of Tsubei's basket.

What are they for?

Ah-ha! Nusumu knows that food is the way to everyone's hearts!

Holding the basket a little lower so Ren'i can easily pick what he likes, Nusumu nods. He may have however many he would like, as long as he doesn't make himself sick. Nusumu is hoping for good taste-testers. She would like to know what he- and everyone else, for that matter- thinks.

Sneaky thinks she needs to try a few more to be certain, and scoops up another handful. It is fortunate that Nusumu baked so many.

The objects in Tsubei's basket interest Nusumu greatly. She peers closely, and her hands get a familiar tingly feeling, but she restrains herself. There is no reason to rupture friendships, not now. Instead, she politely inquires what Tsubei plans to do with these seemingly random things. Is she going to do magic as well?

Ren'i thanked Nusumu greatly and took a few cookies, no more than four, and began to chomp down on them quite happily.

They are delicious! Nusumu has no reason to worry, these are fantastic. He beamed up to her with a few sprinkles on his face, then went back to 'taste-testing' the cookies.

Tsubei smiled to her friends and nodded. Indeed, she was going to do magic of a sorts. She was anxious to share what she had discovered not too long ago.

She waited for the wind to die down and then she pulled it forward to her, making it spin around the pinwheel. They might have thought it was just the natural wind doing it, until she made it spin the opposite direction of the wind's flow.

Yousei's eyebrows shoot up. Almost absently, she lowers the hand holding the cookie and watches Tsubei quietly.

Look, Ren'i. Magic, she projects softly.

Tsubei is quite clever to have learned such a thing. She should be proud of her accomplishment. The feelings are genuine and kind, but underlying it, there is a strange edge to her thoughts. Yousei... must be going home now. She smiles at all of them in turn, but the motion looks a little odd on her face. She wishes them all a wonderful night, and she will see them soon, she's certain. She walks away from the storefront slowly, the cookie still in hand.

She has a lot to think about.

Delighted, Nusumu takes one cookie for herself and nibbles it. Not bad. But she is convinced that she can make it better somehow.

She watches the pinwheel with interest, but doesn't really see anything special- until it spins in the opposite direction. Amazing! Is there a trick to it, rubber bands or springs? Or is this the other kind of magic? How did Tsubei learn it? Would she be willing to teach Nusumu?

While pelting Tsubei with questions, it takes a moment for Nusumu to notice Yousei leaving. Already? But if Yousei must, she must. Nusumu hopes to see her again soon... when she has less on her mind, perhaps.

Ren'i looked up at Tsubei's doings. Yes, it was magic and he had seen Tsubei practicing it. He smiled a bit, but he then noticed Yousei's expression. He wondered what might be wrong, but she left before he had a chance to ask. He bid her farewell, but watched Tsubei's tricks. Had something Tsubei done somehow hurt Yousei? He would ask questions later.

Tsubei smiled to Nusumu, about to answer until she saw Yousei leave. She sent her farewells to her, but she too had seen the expression on her face. What had she done?

Tsubei can try to teach it to Nusumu, but she's not sure if it can be taught. Tsubei just happened upon it while she was recovering from illness. She set the pinwheel down in the basket again. That's not all Tsubei can do, though.

Nusumu nods, a bit worried now. She did not know that Tsubei was sick! She would have brought soup at least. Tsubei must be better now, or she would not be outside in the cold, but she must take it easy!

And if it cannot be taught, that is okay. Truthfully, Nusumu prefers illusion-type magic to magic-type magic. But she still has a lot to learn about that as well. She looks at Sneaky proudly.

Caught off guard, Sneaky grins awkwardly, displaying a mouthful of cookie crumbs.

Er... well, maybe Sneaky has to learn too. sweatdrop

Would Tsubei like to show Nusumu something else?

Tsubei looked to Sneaky with a giggle, smiling over at the dinosaur before she turned back to Nusumu.

Yes, Tsubei has more to show them. She projected as she took out the tennis ball, setting it down upon the ground. She knelt down in front of it and began to meditatively concentrate yet again. She willed the ball to roll to one side, then the other.....and then around her in a full circle or two.

Ren'i watched as he munched on the cookies, smiling a bit listlessly as he wondered when he might find his own magic? He projected to Nusumu that Tsubei was practicing an Elemental magic, which most Porcelain know how to do at least one of.....out of the five, of course.

That is very exciting! Nusumu bends down to look at the ball, but as far as she can tell, nothing is making the ball move that way. Tsubei is doing it all by herself somehow!

Elemental magic? Nusumu has not heard much about that. She does vaguely remember Tsukiba doing things with water, but it was a long time ago. She is far more concerned with trickery magic. Especially, she notes, the kind of magic that makes things disappear. ninja

Of course, this one appears to have some skill with that as well, she teases, noting the disappearing cookies. whee

It does look interesting though. If all Porcelain learn, why has Nusumu not heard more about it?

"Perhaps Tsukiba had a lot to hide from us." She stated ruefully, a bit of an edge to her voice. She smiled though and shrugged.

It does not matter. Tsubei learned about it when she was in the Silver World and Ren'i knows quite a bit, as well. She stood up and tried to levitate the ball up off of the ground, watching it rise to just below her knees. She tried to hold it there.

Noting the change in Tsubei's tone, Nusumu agrees warily. But she also agrees that there is little point in dwelling on it now.

What is this Silver World? Nusumu has never heard of it. It isn't Dragonlamp, is it? Nusumu doesn't think she really wants to go there, even if it means learning cool stuff. Or maybe it's somewhere else. Is it where Tsubei's friend is from then?

Ren'i finished his current cookie and finally interjected to explain a few things.

Ren'i is from the Golden World, or the land of the living. The Silver World is their way to describe the land of the dead or spirits, which is like a mirror image of the Golden World. But from what Tsubei says, the Silver World seems to have merged with the Golden World...shortly after Ren'i and a few others got here, it seems from the history books she brought back with her. It also seems like a few things have changed, but the culture is essentially the same. He seemed confused himself as to how to properly explain it to her.

Tsubei listened to Ren'i as he tried to explain it to Nusumu. Indeed, it could be confusing. Perhaps she might bring the history book that Reisho gave her so that she could explain it better.

Tsubei thinks that doorways to the Silver World open at random intervals, like when she crossed over herself. Perhaps there will be more stable portals in the future and they can all visit the Silver World together. Her tone was hopeful and she smiled in a reminiscent way. It seemed that she really liked the Silver World. Or it could have been that she actually managed to make the ball levitate up to her arm's level, which she hadn't done before.

Nusumu thinks that that is... extremely confusing. @_@; She doesn't entirely understand. That there are other worlds is simple enough, but a world of the living combining with one of the dead? That does not make sense at all. Worlds are worlds, like oil and water, two different ones cannot be mixed.

But if Tsubei visited this world, then Nusumu accepts its existence. If it is not a bad place, she would very much like to go, especially if she could go with friends like Tsubei. 3nodding

All of this thinking is beginning to give Nusumu a headache. She puts one hand over her eyes for a moment, but removes it in time to see Tsubei lift the ball high. Truly, that is a wonderful accomplishment!

Sneaky's overprotective parent mode kicks in, and she grabs at Nusumu's arm. Nusumu is not feeling well?

Just a little, but Nusumu is sure it will pass in a moment-

If Nusumu is unwell, they are going home! Sneaky knew that this cold weather would bring bad things! scream

Not giving Nusumu any choice, Sneaky tightens her grip and begins to drag Nusumu away.

gonk ! Nusumu is apologetic and a bit embarrassed, but she does send her goodbyes to Tsubei and Ren'i. They have given her much to think about. Still, she looks forward to seeing them again soon.

Inside of the small shack, tucked away between three vast walls, lies a legend greater than any Gaia has ever known. The developer of the four-sword-style, a maiden so distant that he is rumored to be made of ice, dwells in the humble residence

He pushes through the door of his home, gripping a daitou and while his long, green hair streams down his back in a ponytail.

Shuuken stands in the doorway, a stick tied to her belt on her left, right, and backside while she grips another stick in her right hand. A determined expression rests on her face as the long strings of green confetti, attached to her head with tape, flow in the simple breeze.

What adventure lies before him?

Nusumu skips along the last few yards between her and the udon-ya. As usual, a basket is swinging on her arm, covered with a green and red striped dishcloth. Over her robes she is wearing a very nice apron, made of a sturdy deep blue fabric and trimmed with lilac ruffles. It has several pockets; out of many protrude kitchen gizmos, such as an melon baller and a waiter's corkscrew.

For the first time in recent memory, she is making this trip alone. Sneaky is feeling unwell, and Nusumu has promised to bring her something hot to eat. By now she has learned that the udon-ya is generally closed, at least when she visits, so she plans to pick up soup ingredients elsewhere. But in the meantime, she decides to give something a try.

Stepping up to the door, Nusumu knocks lightly, accompanying the sound with a gentle inquisitive projection. Is anyone inside?

Jilan shuffles up to the udon-ya with his zither case across his back; the thing looks awkward due to its size, but the Porcelain boy does not seem to mind carrying it. He projects shy greetings as he sees Nusumu and ... who is that in the doorway? Jilan thinks he recognizes the other Porcelain, but he does not fully remember....

No one minds if he comes inside to get out of the cold for a bit, though, do they? He has been out and about, and the heat on his bus from home was broken this morning gonk

Setsushi, now around two feet shorter and far less muscular than usual, gazes at the two, her arms folding in front of her chest.

While the udon-ya is closed, Setsushi is willing to allow the two to enter it--if their intentions are pure! The little girl eyes them with a raised brow before nodding and moving back into the shop.

Come, enter! The teacup of friendship is far more desirable than the blade of war!

Nusumu has only met the proprietor of this establishment once, but recalls that he was unusually tall. This person is not. Though it is possible that there is some sinister magic shrinking people again (and if that is the case, Nusumu will get very violent indeed), she suspects that this may be an impostor.

However, considering masquerading as another is sneaky indeed, Nusumu approves! 3nodding

She returns Jilan's greetings, and upon hearing his terrible fate, hurries to uncover her basket. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it is filled with Christmas cookies, all shaped like ornaments. These are even more thoroughly decorated than the last batch, each one covered with crystal sugar in a variety of colors, as well as gold and silver nonpareils. They are the crowning glory of her Christmas cookie efforts this year!

... well, the ones that she saved from Sneaky, anyway. sweatdrop

Nusumu brought them for the owner of the udon-ya (perhaps to bargain with?) but is pleased to share, both with Jilan and the impostor. That is, if they will tell her what they think of them.

Jilan smiles faintly at the one in the doorway and bows, thanking "Setsushi" for his kindness in permitting him to enter. Warming up to get rid of goosebumps seems like a benign enough pursuit.

He bows to Nusumu, too, as well as he can with the zither across his back, and boggles a little at the cookies. They look very good! He fumblingly apologizes for not bringing any cookies of his own to share - Kumoru does not bake, but he purchased some sugar-sprinkled trees from the store for everyone. His projections hesitantly imply that home-baked goods are superior to anything bought at the store, but he also obviously does not want to imply that he does not like his father's gift.

... The boy will have to try one of Nusumu's cookies to really be able to make an accurate comparison. He can play a song or two for her in return. Jilan came by partly to play his zither for everyone anyway.

Inside of the udon-ya, Shuuken's fingers fumble with the tape--and she lets out a cat-like screech when the material takes some of her hair with the initial pull. She stands in silence, eyeing the offending material which houses both confetti and her natural hair before glancing up at her unviewable scalp--perhaps the tape was not a good idea.

And there are still so many pieces to go... crying

Upon the mention of cookies and music, Shuuken turns her attention back to the two assembled. She claps her hands together in quick succession to silence them, her brows raised.

Shuuken will accept both the cookies and the music in exchange for the lodging! ... Actually, aside from climbing and fighting things, Shuuken doesn't have much to give them. She frowns, a bit of sadness seeping from her before her fist slams against the wall.

Shuuken will be the finest host the two have ever had! Let Shuuken bring out the tea! While Shuuken does this, the two should prepare their respective goods for consumption!

Shuuken's finger darts forward at the two, her eyes narrowed.

Be prepared! scream

Nusumu briefly wonders if her pursuits can be deemed pure. Probably not. But she promises not to run off with the silverware, especially when she came bearing gifts. If anything, this visit is about sharing. And so, she follows Jilan into the shop.

She does, of course, forgive him for not having cookies; how could he have known? And she prefers homemade cookies as well. Her projections less subtly imply her disdain for any store-bought baked goods, particularly the kind made in bulk, but she tries to remain tactful. It is, she reminds herself, the thought that counts.

At the mention of the zither, Nusumu peers at the strange object. She has never seen one before. It is for music? Then Nusumu would definitely like to hear, and calls that a very fair exchange indeed... even if the cookies were meant as gifts.

She is a bit disappointed- and more than a bit amused- as the disguise is removed. Although this one has potential, she has a way to go. As the other two go about preparing, she sets the cookies on the nearest table and begins to rummage through her apron pockets. She pulls out a potato peeler and a neon pink plastic krazy straw, but still cannot find what she is looking for.

Once inside, Jilan sets the zither case down on one of the tables. At Shuuken's shriek, he jumps and whirls around, immediately wondering if she is alright. Tape in her hair? What a horrible predicament gonk

He shyly edges towards her, projecting a hesitant offer to help. Jilan can at least see the bits of tape better than she can? Shuuken's intensity clearly intimidates him a little.

Jilan glances back to Nusumu, though, and nods - he learned to play the zither in the Silver World, and managed to pick up a couple Gaian holiday songs on it over the last few weeks. With a good deal of shy humbleness, he tells her that he could still stand to improve considerably. And... uh, was also out and about today with the intent of finding a music teacher. If Nusumu knows anyone?

Shuuken blinks at Jilan, her head cocking to the side. She again peers up at the top of her head before she slowly, almost shyly, nods. She leans her head forward, watching Jilan from behind the confetti locks.

Of course, her attention is drawn even further towards Jilan when he reveals his knowledge of the Silver World. She almost grabs him and pulls him forward--but her memories of Setsushi's advisement stop her grubby little claws just short of his shirt.

What does he know of the Silver World?! Her thoughts, quick and eager, dart towards Jilan once more. What does he know of the Silver Empress?!

Nusumu belatedly realizes that she should have offered to help too, but shrugs. Jilan will certainly be able to handle it; hands that can play such an instrument can certainly manage hair. She continues to poke in her apron, pulling out a soup spoon, a can opener, and a handful of bottle caps before giving up.

As Jilan mentions the Silver World, Nusumu too projects curiosity, though hers is far more restrained than Shuuken's. Tsubei had mentioned that place, and showed what she had learned. It seems that it is a place full of learning for all who visit. Interesting indeed.

The boy hesitantly starts to work on getting the sticky bits of tape and confetti out of Shuuken's hair, doing his very best to avoid tugging at her scalp. All the while he gives off a pre-emptive feeling of apology just in case he accidentally yanks on any hairs ._.

... Which he nearly does as the girl's eagerness catches him by surprise again.

Oh, the Silver World? Jilan tries to hide away his immediate thoughts of the place as scary, as it was only that way to him because it was so unfamiliar. It was, of course, filled with Porcelain, and therefore quite unlike Gaia. They had their on ways of doing things, which Jilan had learned with some difficulty. But... they were his people, his kind, he supposes. The place felt like home in its own way, and he would not be at all upset to go back.

The boy's mind trailes off for a moment, then he abruptly turns his attention back to the tape in Shuuken's hair. He never met the Silver Empress or anything, but his tutor Jin said sie worked with her. Jilan shrugs slightly. There is a lot he does not know about Jin and what sie does, though, even after two years sweatdrop

Shuuken listens to him eagerly, hanging onto each and every thought that he emits. Jilan may have never had such a captive audience--she even seems to forget the slight pains that the tape removal brings. She emits the very essence of bated breath.

And when he mentions Jin, the flame of excitement in the girl's eyes bursts into an inferno. Shuuken must see Jin! Jilan must introduce them!

Shuuken pauses. Normally, she is loathe to reveal her position, her gender, but now--now it is needed! Dragon Knights are appearing along with other prominent figures!

Shuuken is the princess of Autumn-Cove! It is imperative that Jilan introduces her to Jin! The fate of the Golden World may be in his tiny, tape-pulling hands!

Nusumu also listens eagerly, though she is more calm about her interest. There is not a great deal of information, though the thought if a place filled with Porcelain is fascinating. His tutor sounds curious as well; someone who works with an Empress must be important.

She is more interested in Shuuken's reaction, and studies the girl carefully while jamming her things back into the pockets of her apron. Her interest spikes as Shuuken mentions her position. Although she has never heard of Autumn-Cove, she has definitely heard of princesses before. There is definitely more to this one than meets the eye. In the excitement, the thought of cookies and music is almost forgotten.

Though, there is some doubt. Politely, Nusumu inquires as to whether this is another deception, playful or not, or if it is all on the level.

Jilan picks what he thinks is the last bit of tape from Shuuken's hair - then jumps a little as she declares herself. She is a Princess!? He fumbles to pick the tape from his own fingers and bows quickly.

He- he does not know if he can introduce her to Jin or not, however. At least not right now. Jin... confused Jilan even when they lived together, and sie kind of... left Jilan in Gaia without an explanation or anything. He is not sure how to get back to the Silver World, and even if he did, Jin often disappears on long trips and Jilan has no idea where sie goes. Probably very important business for the Silver Empress or something, hence why this little Jilan was not permitted to know the nature of the excursions.

... But perhaps Shuuken would be allowed to know, since she holds much more rank than a little bookworm of a boy.

Shuuken stands, her vibrant red hair whipping with her as she jerks her head to look up at Nusumu.

How sure is Shuuken?! Shuuken is very sure! As if it proves that fact, Shuuken proceeds to deliver a thumbs' up to Nusumu, her determined eyes narrowed.

When Jilan begins to bow, Shuuken raises a hand and smacks him lightly in the head. Shuuken won't accept any of that crap! Instead, she must meet Jin! Shuuken knows ways to enter the Silver World, but she needs Jilan's full cooperation!

Her features soften, her "tone" grows more gentle, and she extends a hand to touch his shoulder lightly. Shuuken fears what is happening in the Golden World! Through Jin, and then the Silver Empress, they may be able to return and right what is going on!

Well then! Nusumu assures Shuuken that she meant no disrespect, that she was merely checking to make sure this wasn't another... brilliant disguise. Clearly Shuuken (should that be Princess Shuuken?) is very talented, and Nusumu likes to be careful.

There is little else that Nusumu can contribute. All that she knows of the Silver World she learned from Tsubei, and they did not discuss it for long. She isn't even sure she has heard of the Golden World before. But she recognizes this as an opportunity to learn more, if not help, and she pays extra close attention.

The young scholar squeaks and backs away as the princess hits him, then nods quickly. Right! No bowing!

... What is happening in the Golden World, though? Jilan admits that he does not know the full story. He lived in Gaia, then found himself rather unexpectedly in the Silver World one day. After two years there, Jin returned him ... well, not without warning, but it was still kind of sudden. Since his return, he spoke to Setsushi only briefly about it, to find out that it was several hundred years later in the Silver World. Xiao Huo had little information that he could readily figure out, and the High Priest Kouyo told him next to nothing at all about himself or how he got here to Gaia.

He glances between Nusumu and Shuuken. What can the Princess tell the unenlightened ones of Gaia about the Golden World?

Hundreds of years?! Panic darts across the princess' face and through her thoughts, the air becoming palpable with her feelings of distress. Shuuken freezes, however, and the negative thoughts are driven away by the recent arrival of the Dragon Knights. Of course! The Silver World and Golden World must go by different time measurements! After all, time in the Silver World seems to pass so quickly in comparison to Gaia.

Shuuken's hand strokes over her chin, her eyes narrowed as she thinks over the situation carefully. Before long, she jabs a finger out to point both at the musician and the chef, her eyes bathed in seriousness.

Listen here 'n Shuuken will instruct the unenlightened in the Golden World! It's a place much like Gaia, one of intrigue and mystery, but peace has been threatened recently! Important figures, from Shuuken, an integral part of the sociopolitical scheme of the realm, to the Dragon Knights, great protectors of the realm, have been disappearing!

Shuuken begins to pace in the room, her lips twisted into a pouty frown. Shuuken must find a way to return! And how better to do so than by enlisting the aid of a Goddess?! The Silver Empress will surely help her children!

Shuuken sends a wild fist into the air, her hair and clothing knocked back by the sudden motion. Are they with her to save the Golden World?!

huuken's anxiety is so intense that it catches Nusumu by surprise. Although she had conceded that the girl was, in fact, a Princess, the gravity of the situation had yet to hit her. Now, although she still doesn't know all the details, she is more concerned, and takes the matter a little more seriously.

To make sure she understands, Nusumu tries to reiterate the information to herself. The Golden World is another world, like Gaia... and for all she knows, like Dragonlamp as well, though considering her hazy memories of the place, she hopes not. Important people are disappearing and coming to Gaia. But why?

Nusumu begins to ask for more information, about this Silver Empress and these Dragon Knights, but is completely cut off by Shuuken's demand. Will she help? If the situation is as dire as it seems, then she would of course lend her services. But unless the Princess is in need of cake or for certain objects to mysteriously go missing, Nusumu is not sure what use she would be.

Shying away from the princess's anxiety, Jilan goes back to his zither case to open it. If they go to the Silver World, he can do what he can, though... the boy is not the best guide since he has only spent two years there. With any luck, all he would have to do is find Jin, though. Maybe they could just stake out Jin's apartment and eventually sie would return. Jin always had before.

He starts to tune the instrument, but also jumps at the princess's sudden outburst.

Save the Golden World? Well, he will do what he can, he supposes. It is not Jilan's world, but ... the thought of being unable to return home hurts him. Or, the thought of being unable to return to Gaia - he worried about such a possibility at times when he was in the Silver World. So he supposes he can understand how the princess feels and wishes to help.

Jilan falls silent, then, to finish checking the tuning on his zither, though he glances up at Shuuken frequently, as though a little worried about another outburst from her.
He is already somewhat jumpy by nature.... sweatdrop

They need not be warriors to be of service to the Golden World! With Jilan's connections and Nusumu's wandering hand, they will be formidable!

... At the very least, they'll be able to approach the Silver Empress. Shuuken tightens a fist, hesitation marking her features before she shakes her head wildly, uncertainty flying away from the princess. They will succeed and they will save the Golden World! Shuuken will make sure that honors and rewards are granted to the two when they find a way back!

... Now all Shuuken needs to do is ask Tsubei or Setsushi for the entrance to the Silver World. They mustn't tell the adults of their intentions in the Silver World! They would try to stop them! And of course, all of those assembled must be ready for a long journey! If they aren't prepared for such, they can turn back now!

Shuuken's eyes narrow, her arms folding in front of her chest.

They'll be labeled as cowards, of course...

Wandering hand? Well, Nusumu has certainly been called worse. sweatdrop

Although at first, Nusumu was amused by Shuuken's vigor, she is now truly touched by the Princess's passion. Is this what being a Princess really is? Privately, Nusumu hopes not. She admires Princess' confidence, her steadfastness. Though Nusumu has not been without missions, she wonders if she is capable of being so firm in her resolve, willing to move heaven and earth to fulfill her goals.

It is then she realizes that she truly does wish to help, with a cause that she knows nearly nothing about. The realization startles her, but she nods. She will do what is asked of her. The costs- going far from home, without the ones she loves- are steep. But in truth, she cannot see herself backing away. There have been many changes in the past weeks, and if Nusumu can help- and in the process, find a place for herself among the changes, as she is not the Porcelain she once was- then she must try.

-Wait, they're going to go now? Shouldn't they all plan a little more, what to take with them and how to go about doing this and such? Jilan only found Jin by chance last time - or rather Jin found him - when Jilan turned up unexpectedly in the Silver World.

He projects a clear feeling of surprise when the Princess Shuuken mentions an entrance to the Silver World, though. They found another way in?

... All the more reason to plan, no? Where does in the Silver World does it lead? And, since it apparently might be important, when? Jin said sie can time-travel, but the three of them cannot. So the chances of running into hir might be even lower....

Jilan picks chords anxiously on his zither, then fiddles with the tuning some more just to do something with his hands. He is not a coward, he is just concerned about being too hasty. However... the Silver World started to feel like home to him just as much as Gaia does, since it was Jilan's first opportunity to really live among his own kind; much as he would like to remain safe in Kumoru's care, studying the human's magic, he is also excited by the idea of returning to the Silver World for a time. If he can help aid his bretheren of the Golden World as well, then all the better.

Shuuken narrows her eyes, a thoughtful expression crossing her face. She thinks on Jilan's proposal for several moments before she finally nods, a gruff grunt affirming his plan of action.

Fine! They shall plan for the upcoming adventure! Shuuken will be sure to find out when, and where, the entrance takes them. If need be, Shuuken will also prepare rations for their first several days until they can find better accommodations. They will plan, but not for too long! Shuuken has found that too much planning can later lead to inaction later on as well a lack of flexibility if the plans fall apart.

Shuuken pauses in her thoughts, softness sliding along her cheeks along with a mild blush. She soon bows her head to both of her companions, her eyes closed.

Shuuken thanks them both for their kindness, bravery, and sacrifice. Shuuken, while vigorous in spirit, is only one Porcelain and thus can only do so much. With them, the chances of success have risen.

Hearing Jilan's concerns, Nusumu looks up, startled. She didn't think they would leave right away! After all, Sneaky is sick, and she has a job... though she would not mind losing that too much. Moreover, she agrees with Jilan's request for time to prepare, research. It helps no one to rush forward without knowing what lies ahead.

She is relieved when Shuuken agrees, and offers to help prepare rations. Nusumu is yet learning, but she does have some knowledge of preparing and storing food. She has never tried to pack a large amount for a long journey, but she believes that she can figure it out in time.

Blushing a bit herself, Nusumu bobs her head respectfully, something she does not often do. She is quite impressed by Princess, by her spirit and courage, and would like to see what waits for them in this Silver World. If she can do something to help, better still.

Sacrifice? Jilan wrings his hands a little, hoping this journey will not be too dangerous. But then the Silver World seemed like a relatively nice place. It was not like they were going to Dragonlamp. Maybe... maybe he can ask High Priest Kouyo to pray for their safety, too. If prayers from Gaia work in the Silver World.

And he was not talking about planning the entire trip from the start. Just a bit of what to do immediately upon arrival. They are stepping out into a place that none of them are too familiar with, and Jilan just wants to think through what stones they can step on to start their journey.

He agrees with Nusumu, though, and bows alongside her. He can take care of much of the planning, and Princess Shuuken can lead them in acting, since she is far braver than this little Jilan. He wishes to help where he can since... well, he can cook so he will not starve, but Jilan is no chef sweatdrop When the boy straightens again, his glasses have slipped down his Porcelain nose, and he frowns slightly as he pushes them back up where they belong.

Perhaps... when they get to the Silver World, if they cannot immediately find Jin, they can seek out Senrei, his neighbor, or Genka, one of his good friends. Jilan wishes to see Genka again anyway, to show him how he has improved at playing his zither, and to thank him again for the book. But the boy seems confident that the artist will have some idea where Jin is.

... If all else fails, they can find their way to Jilan's favorite library; Jilan spent a few nights there, particularly during the hot summers, and he thinks that the librarians either do not actually mind his loitering, or like him enough to permit it.

Smiling faintly, Jilan starts to play a song quietly on his instrument - one of the ones he learned in the Silver World.

... Shuuken is truly blessed to have such allies. They have just met Shuuken, they have not even been to the Golden World, but they are already willing to leave their homes to help her.

Shuuken closes her eyes before taking in a deep breath, her fists clenching and unclenching. Her eyes snap open and she smiles brightly to each of them, despite the fact her eyes are slightly reddened. To some, it might be obvious that Shuuken was holding back tears.

Nusumu, pull out the cookies! Jilan, keep playing that tune! Shuuken will prepare some tea!

The small Porcelain's fist moves to slam against her chest before she spins and darts towards the kitchen.

They will live as queens before they delve into the Silver World!

Nusumu nods approvingly. While she approves of others knowing basic cooking skills, she is mostly glad that Jilan is not a chef. Nusumu is not sure she could take the competition. >.>;;

Although she is still nervous and shaken by how quickly this has been decided, she feels that their group is well-rounded indeed. They have Jilan, who is clearly quite smart and has experience in the Silver World, and Shuuken, who has enough vigor for all of them. For a moment Nusumu feels her confidence ebb- what can a chef do, other than stave away starvation? Then again, that is not her only area of expertise.

She smiles at Shuuken, but feels she must be honest here and now. Her motives are not entirely selfless; she has been intrigued by the idea of this Silver World since Tsubei mentioned it to her. Even if Princess did not ask, she might have sought out a way to visit. However, with the circumstances being what they are, if there is anything she can do to help, it would be an honor.

With that out of the way, she uncovers the cookies again, and begins to follow Shuuken to the kitchen. Cookies need plates, or at least napkins, so they do not get crumbs all over the place.

A disapproving projection notes that cookies hardly make a proper lunch.

Setsushi arrives, carrying two large grocery bags in his arms. The ingredients inside are for making New Year's soup, he informs them; if they don't taste it, they'll have bad luck in the new year. They must allow Setsushi to treat them -- and some other guests who may or may not show up later.

He makes his way into the house to begin laying out the needed ingredients and putting away the unneeded ones. As he works, he wonders if perhaps he and Nusumu could figure out some way to divide the small kitchen space? Perhaps the cookies could come after the meal.

Jilan admits that he is also doing this because he wishes to return to the Silver World for himself. It is just very convenient that he can be a great help to the Princess and a guide for Nusumu. He loves to be helpful anyway, and will do whatever he can for Princess Shuuken.

He looks up from his zither as Setsushi arrives, and inches over to try to peer into the grocery bags. There is a combination of food that gives good luck when you eat it? Jilan was not aware. Is this Golden World luck magic? How does it work? He projects his curiosity as he wishes Setsushi a happy new year.

Shuuken scratches at her nose slightly, the well of emotion dissipating somewhat. The fact that they had ulterior motives--well, it's to be expected but it's not very romantic. Shuuken will make do with what she has, however!

The princess/bandit king grins before continuing to the kitchen--only to be stopped by the sound of Setsushi's voice. A bit of green confetti still hangs in her hair as she raises an eyebrow, a hand moving to draw a tiny stick tucked into her shoe. She points the blunt bit of wood at Setsushi, her eyes narrowed.

For the sake of all assembled, Setsushi, Father of the Four-Sword Style, will stop the Impostor here! With his death, they may then partake of an unpoisoned batch of Good Luck Soup.

The Impostor would best defend himself. . .

Nusumu jumps in surprise as Setsushi comes in behind her. Though she is somewhat huffy over anyone questioning her cooking, she assures him that they were not meant to be a meal, only a snack. She would love to taste this soup... and, if the chef is willing, to purchase some to take home.

If the cookies are to be saved for later, Nusumu does not need to take up space in the kitchen, so she retreats to the dining room, nearly bumping into Shuuken as she projects her challenge. A bit wary, she quietly suggests that "Setsushi" at least allow this visitor to prepare the meal; Nusumu can watch to make sure it is not poisoned, if necessary. A fight would be more interesting after both parties have regained their strength, would it not?

At least, if they must battle, it might be better to do so outside to avoid breaking things.
Setsushi freezes in the midst of pulling out a bundle of green onions from his shopping bag and slowly turns his head to stare at Shuuken.

"... Impostor?" ... Setsushi doesn't get it. Not at first, at least, but when he looks over Shuuken's costume and a single stray piece of confetti remaining in her hair, he begins to get an idea.

... But why would an impostor stoop to poisoning their food? That would be an evil act and a great dishonor, and it would instantly reveal him as the fake. Setsushi proposes they follow Madame Nusumu's plan and dine first, then do battle.

Then, in the blink of an eye, he then flips the stalks in his hand and swings them at Shuuken's head -- in a deliberate miss. A grin starts threatening at the corner of his mouth, and he turns around, not before reminding Shuuken that a Knight does not wear his swords like that, and goes back to his work.

New Year's soup! A tradition among the people of Toukoku. The idea that one will have bad luck if one does not taste it is just a superstition, of course. But the others will miss out on a delicious meal if they pass. This is one of Setsushi's mother's special recipes and is just perfect for the crisp weather of Quiescence.

And he is, of course, treating them. There is no need to give Setsushi their money; they can repay him by keeping him company today.

Jilan tells Shuuken as secretly as he can manage that he is interested in seeking more knowledge, and that the more he knows, the better help he will be to the Princess.

He smiles a little as Princess Shuuken challenges the "imposter", and edges a little closer to the wall with his zither. He agrees with Nusumu's proposal to allow him to cook his soup first. If the soup provides both warriors with measures of extra luck, then it will make the fight that much more exciting, too.

The boy is definitely interested in the soup, too. He can play some music for Setsushi as well - does the Knight have any requests? Jilan starts picking out a song slowly on the stings of his zither, trying to remember how it goes; he knows the songs for the Mid-Year festival better, but he will try to recall something appropriate for the season~

Shuuken jumps back as if she had been burned as Setsushi sends a purposefully clumsy strike at her head. She seems about to "speak" before she pauses and glances to the small piece of wood in her hand.

... Setsushi will acquiesce to the cries for peace, but only because a young maiden and a fantastic chef called for it. She frowns, raising her eyebrows as she looks from the stick to Setsushi. Seriously, it'd help Setsushi more if he did carry a knife in his shoe, though! What if he found himself without a daitou, someday?! ... Shuuken is thinking of the safety of her vassal, after all!

She peeks from the corners of her eyes at Jilan before grinning slightly, her message meant only for him. Jilan is a noble maiden with maturity beyond his years! May the Silver Empress smile on him!

Of course, at the offer of playing requests, Shuuken moves a hand to rub at her chin. She thinks, and thinks, and soon jabs a finger towards Jilan. Shuuken demands to know if Jilan knows the song "Shut Up and Let Me Go?" Even before he can respond, Shuuken starts dancing to an invisible beat as her voice rises into the air, tonelessly carrying a heavily accented Gaian song.

"Shut oop 'n let meh go," sings Shuuken, her hips swaying and her head shaking in unison to the invisible melody, "I un't freak'n, I un't fake'n dis! I un't freak'n, I un't fake'n dis!"

Quite relieved that the fighting has been at least postponed, Nusumu bows slightly to Setsushi and Setsushi. She looks forward to watching their battle after the meal... she thinks. She would also be happy to pay for some soup to take with her, if Setsushi has enough, for a sick friend of hers. If she recalls correctly, this is a place of business as well as good food.

Not wanting to take up more room, she quickly backs out of the kitchen. Returning to the dining area, she places the dishcloth back over the basket of cookies to keep them from drying out too much- and maybe to stave away temptation- and settles into a seat. Nusumu has no requests; she listens to far too little music as it is, and would love to hear something new.

At hearing Shuuken's performance, she cannot keep all of her amusement bottled up; in addition to filling her mind, she also chuckles softly. Clearly this is a Princess of many talents.

If Setsushi finds himself without his daitou, he always has this! -- he exclaims as he swings a swift punch at Shuuken's head, again missing widely.

With that, he leaves her to her devices, ignoring her little performance, and projects concern to Nusumu. Setsushi would definitely not charge to provide her with a little soup to take home -- when others are sick, it is not a time to be greedy. But... Setsushi does not really have any receptacles that Nusumu could use.
gonk Did she bring any with her?

As he starts preparing an anchovy broth, he quietly draws into himself, contemplating a variety of muddled subjects. Chiyo's soup... Quiescence... ... If this is the New Year, does that mean Setsushi is now...

Thirty...?
In spite of his maturity beyond his years, Jilan blushes and fidgets at Shuuken's compliment.

... He, uh... he is not sure he is familiar with that song, though sweatdrop If the Princess Shuuken can find him some music for it, though, then Jilan can try to learn it?

For now, he continues to play things he remembers from the Silver World, wishing he had thought to bring the music with him. He has mostly been practicing Gaian songs recently. ... Jilan has gotten kind of tired of hearing Gaian Christmas music, though, so he will refrain from playing that.
The young scholar wonders what good festival music is if people get sick of it.

After a few minutes, as the smell of the brewing soup starts to fill the room, Jilan asks Setsushi if perhaps he could have a copy of the recipe for the soup. Probably just to contemplate, since he would probably ruin it if he attempted to make it himself sweatdrop Or perhaps Kumoru could try his hand at it. Cooking seems an awful lot like magic to Jilan most of the time anyway.

And with cat-like agility, Shuuken darts away from the punch--not that it'd have ever landed anyway. If Setsushi keeps up his deadly barrage, Shuuken will have no choice but to put him down! She jerks a finger at him, a mock sternness covering her features. Of course, it doesn't remain with what Jilan says next.

Shuuken pauses at Jilan's admittance that he doesn't know the song. Shuuken sighs, her head slumping forward. She is afraid she does not have the music to it, but she also wants to hear some of Jilan's songs. Anything he chooses will do!

... She will, however, be sure to procure the music so Jilan can study it; that is Shuuken's promise! Shuuken proceeds to glance towards Nusumu as she reveals a fanged grin. Shuuken is pretty good at dancing, but Shuuken bets Nusumu's better at making cookies! Agh! Shuuken's so hungry!

And then Shuuken's mind is jerked into an entirely different direction at Setsushi's quiet reveal. She darts over to the man, her fingers grabbing at the cloth of his sleeve.

Has Setsushi's birthday come?!

Nusumu frowns; she hadn't thought to bring a container with her. Most restaurants she was used to provided paper or plastic cups for soup. Has this udon-ya not heard of takeout?

However, if Setsushi is willing, Nusumu could run to another shop and purchase a container of some kind. Or, if he is willing to lend her a bowl, she promises to return it the next day. On her honor, she would not keep it. Her willingness to go to this length for someone else's food displays her interest in its quality; surely something so special must be spectacular. She also expresses an interest in the recipe, though if it is a special family one, she would not wish to pry. She understands that some chefs have secret recipes that, even if given to a cook of equal ability, cannot be made the same.

At Shuuken's compliment she blushes slightly. Nusumu is better than some, she will admit, but she still has a long way to go. At least she has moved beyond the realm of instant pudding. sweatdrop

A birthday? Oh no! If Nusumu had known, she would have made cake! gonk

After Setsushi leaves, Nusumu pours some soup into a large bowl and passes it to Sneaky, who is taking up the entire couch and looking miserable. But Nusumu knows better, and now that they are alone she reprimands Sneaky sharply. Sneaky did not need to go out, and she even got soup, so will she stop acting so sick?

Somewhat annoyed, Sneaky sits up and starts to drink the soup from the bowl. She expected Nusumu to know that she was, in truth, not very sick at all. But why is she so tense?

Nusumu pushes a stack of blankets off the couch, letting them land on the floor, and sits next to Sneaky. Nusumu is not tense! Just... concerned. If Sneaky acts this way, what will she do when Nusumu is not there?

A moment passes. Calmly, Sneaky sets the bowl on the arm of the couch. She then jumps up and roars at the top of her lungs, loud enough to cause slight ripples in the soup.

NUSUMU WILL NEVER LEAVE SNEAKY. EVER! scream

Is it that Gongjin person? Sneaky's opinion of him had improved somewhat, but if he thinks he can take Nusumu away like this, they will need to have a little chat, face to teeth.

Though at first Nusumu is frightened to see Sneaky so upset, her worry quickly gives way to frustration. It is not Gongjin, she promises- and if Sneaky ever, ever tries to harm him, Nusumu is not sure she will be able to forgive Sneaky.

This, however, is a different matter. One Nusumu would like to discuss with Sneaky, if she can calm down and stop acting like a child!

Sneaky considers this for several moments, taking very deep breaths. Then, almost reluctantly, she sits back down on the couch. She is visibly shaking, but otherwise under control.

Nusumu didn't know Sneaky when she was a child, Sneaky reminds her dryly.

No, but Nusumu can guess based on her own behavior, she retorts. The two of them have much in common.

When she feels that Sneaky is calm again, Nusumu leans against her, feeling the tremors behind her. Nusumu would never leave Sneaky forever. However, there are things that Sneaky cannot teach her.

Nothing important, Sneaky insists.

Nusumu ignores this. There is much of the world that Nusumu has not seen... and a whole other world for her to explore. Sneaky remembers, Nusumu had spoken of a Silver World, and a Golden World not long ago, right?

Sneaky agrees, somewhat warily. She does not like where this is going, but is resolved to let Nusumu finish.

Quickly Nusumu recounts the discussion at the udon-ya, with Jilan and Princess Shuuken. This is Nusumu's chance to go to this Silver World, to learn! And more than that, to do something important. Nusumu could not ask for a better opportunity.

Still wary, Sneaky nods. She does not want to deprive her Nusumu of an education, and knows that someone as wonderful as she has much to offer the world. However, she could not stand to be parted from her for long.

She has listened. Now, she suggests they get some rest, and think about it later. Maybe in a few days.

Nervously, Nusumu mentions the portal that she and Setsushi discovered. They do not know how long it will be there. If Nusumu goes, she must go as soon as-

NO. Fear filling her, Sneaky wraps her short arms around Nusumu's shoulders. That is not enough time, Sneaky's mind cannot take it. She will not let Nusumu leave. She forbids it!

Nusumu feels Sneaky's fear, her sadness. And yet she is still angry, and pulls away. Why should Sneaky keep her from the chance she seeks, to gain her own comfort? Sneaky survived just fine without Nusumu- she proved that when she abandoned Nusumu for so long! Or had Sneaky forgotten that?

Sneaky recoils as if struck. Her shock drives all other emotions away.

Nusumu knows that she has hurt Sneaky, but continues. Is it only okay for Sneaky to leave Nusumu? Must Nusumu constantly wait, not knowing when- if- Sneaky will return, without ever getting to see things herself?

But that isn't- it didn't happen that way, Sneaky tries to explain. If she has any regrets about her life, that incident certainly ranks first. But she thought they had moved past it.

They have started to move past it. Nusumu did not enjoy that time either, but it taught her several lessons. Among them is that Sneaky and Nusumu are able to be apart. They may not enjoy it, but they can, and it means they can learn separately... and teach each other when they are together again.

This is a sound explanation. But it is still guilt that moves Sneaky to acquiesce to Nusumu's request. How could she deprive her?

She will not be gone long?

Nusumu throws her arms around Sneaky and hugs her tightly. Not long, she promises! This is something she must do, but she will come home as soon as possible with stories for Sneaky. She hopes she will learn much in the Silver World... and she believes Sneaky has already learned something.

Gruffly brushing Nusumu away, Sneaky downs the rest of the soup in one gulp. If Nusumu is to leave soon, she had best prepare food for Sneaky. The soup is good, but Sneaky wants Nusumu's food if she has to miss it for a while.

Sighing, Nusumu hops off the couch and heads for the kitchen, heart and mind filled with conflict, and resolution, and visions of what will come.

Nusumu, mid-Youth I retreat

Shinkou and her husband Raii have been nothing but pleasant towards Nusumu since she has arrived at their three-room apartment on the palace grounds, cramped inside but located right on a magnificent lawn along with other Palace workers' residences. Accomodating and kind, yet not overly patronizing, the couple immediately began questioning her about her likes and dislikes, her interests and her goals, and have begun making arrangements for everything she may need.

Indeed, though these two call themselves "servants," Nusumu may have acquired the most bountiful residence of the three explorers; she has easy access to the gardens, kitchens, and a fair number of the offices and libraries. This is no serene royal retreat, however; hundreds of servants, civil servants, scholars, and officials of unknown occupation also share the grounds, cycling in and out at all times of the day.

Though she may have to wade through pockets of frenetic stock-market-like activity, at least most of the chatter is not allowed. Since time passes so slowly in this world, she will have plenty of time to adjust... and plenty of time to return, if she decides this is not the time to go.

Nusumu is in the Capital City of the Silver World; it is Sovereignity of Toutei 1004. She is staying at the apartment of Shinkou, Imperial Grill Chef, and her husband Raii, an Imperial Gardener. Though these two have forgone broad education in favor of mastering their specific fields, the Lower Palace has so much traffic that Nusumu will have many chances to meet skilled and interesting people.

Nusumu has up to three years before she must return to Gaia: '04-'05 (physical age 10,) '05-'06 (physical age 11,) and '06-'07 (physical age 12.) But perhaps she will decide to return before the time of the Naming Ceremony.

Although Nusumu knows she is Porcelain, and is most comfortable with the Porcelain she meets on Gaia, she feels completely foreign in this strange land. And so she is, she supposes, but she wonders if she shouldn't feel more kinship with those around her. But they all seem so certain, so secure, and she is not. They all know how things work, and she does not. Granted, this is what she came to learn, but she did not expect to be this overwhelmed. She does not know what she expected, but this was not it. At first she is shy, but she slowly warms up and tries to experience what this world has to offer.

At the very least, her hosts are nice, and patient while she gets used to her new surroundings. Nusumu has some interest in gardening, mostly through Tsubei and Liwazo, and occasionally walks through the beautiful gardens. She has a few questions for Raii on the subject, all of which he has been able to answer thus far. But of course, she is mostly fascinated by Shinkou, and thrilled to have a chance to learn under a real chef. She watches Shinkou whenever possible, and even attempts to offer her assistance; she is confident that she knows more on the subject of cooking than most "children" her age, at least.

The libraries have not escaped Nusumu's notice. She has not forgotten her mission, and knows that there is probably useful information there. But on her initial visit she discovers that she cannot read any of the books. The writing here is completely alien to Nusumu, who cannot even read Gaian writing very well. This setback frustrates her, since she had never considered reading an essential skill before, and now it seems crucial.

As most of the people in the palace are busy working, Nusumu does not often try to strike up conversation. More often than not, she is content to watch them at work in various fields (but most frequently the kitchen), and speaks only with those who speak to her. She still refuses verbal speech, and answers anyone who notices her in mindspeech only. Her habits may get her strange looks, but Nusumu is used to being strange- or rather, used to thinking everyone else is strange. Once she realizes this, she is much more comfortable with her feelings of alienation, and is able to move past them.

Yet all the while, Nusumu secretly longs for home, and wonders if Sneaky is truly alright, how her Gongjin is doing, and even if Setsushi has gotten takeout containers for the udon-ya. While she does not regret coming, and is fascinated by those around her, part of her is still somewhat homesick.

Toutei 1004

Sovereignty

Shinkou and Raii try to make Nusumu as comfortable as possible for her first few weeks of stay, not pushing her to meet new people or immediately begin learning anything. They are so kind and accomodating Nusumu might even be a little suspicious of them at times.

Celebration

When Shinkou suspects that Nusumu has gotten a little used to the Silver World, she shows her a youths' school for girls, where young women study to prepare for the Naming Ceremony. It seems that most girls of Nusumu's physical age are busy doing this, immersing themselves in the knowledge they need to begin working at age thirteen. Shinkou does not, however, pressure Nusumu to join them, or even directly ask if she would like to. She seems to know it would be difficult, as so much of girls' education is based in books.

Instead, she suggests that she try a proto-apprenticeship at the kitchens. Though not officially employed until they are of age, there are several older children, male and female, doing chores and running errands for the chefs while being exposed to the kitchen environment.

Caesura

Although the chefs are busily preparing for a series of banquets during the Mid-Year Festival, Shinkou suggests that Nusumu not stay and watch, as the stress of the time will make her coworkers irritable, and she does not want Nusumu to get bullied by any of them. Instead, she suggests she go explore the markets with her friends.

In fact, the dozens of competing musicians and actors who perform in the open air during this month might provide one of Nusumu's best opportunities to learn about the culture and history of this world; many of the performances are themed around legends or histories, depicting archetypes that relate to the core values of this Porcelain society.

Fruition

At one point, when Nusumu is just hanging around the kitchens to observe, the Imperial Pastry Chef, Shoyo, assumes she is an actual apprentice and begins ordering her about. When Shoyo learns the truth, she is embarrassed and apologizes.

Submission

Submission and Redress are the busiest months for the various courtiers who inhabit the Palace. Perhaps a bit ironically, they are easier months for the chefs; as there are fewer banquets and parties they do not always have to be in war mode. Shinkou takes the opportunity to tour the city with Nusumu and show her the various monuments and historic sites.

Shinkou explains a bit about the local religion, the reverence of Name and Chaos. She also tells a few myths about the Silver Empress, but they are not helpful to Shuuken's quest, as they are all too contradictory and vague -- is she a dragon-goddess, or has she taken human form? A creature of light or actually embodied? And she's guiding the Silver World, but why...? Shinkou, who is not a philosopher, cannot answer these deep questions, nor does she seem to think it necessary to know the answers in order to revere the Empress.

Redress

After a very frustrating day spent at the library, Nusumu returns to the couple's house in a bad mood, only to find a lovely carved box with many little trays inside, full of samples of Silver World spices. Both of her hosts are surprised at its sudden appearance and neither claims responsibility for the gift.

Extinction

Someone as skilled in the arts of sneaking cannot help but be embarrassed by the incompetent young men who sometimes follow her around, failing miserably at their attempted stealth, peering out at her from behind walls and trees, then running away in a flurry of anxious emotions when she looks at them.

Descent

With the heavy snow, one would imagine Raii has less work, but he still spends most of the day outside of the home, in meetings with gardeners and scholars. As Shinkou is also working a lot, Nusumu has a great deal of time to herself.

One day when Nusumu is just casually experimenting with baking using Silver World technology, a very handsome young man with an unpainted face comes up to her and asks to try the batter. He makes an approving noise, assures her that she will go far, and then skips away, laughing.

Toutei 1005

Quiescence

Shinkou and Raii spends a great deal of time at the city Temple praying for a safe and prosperous New Year. Shinkou explains that they hope their first child will be born this year and that they will have the good health, funds, and knowledge to raise him or her well.

Gestation

A quiet month; little of interest happens. Other than an increase in the volume of her unskilled stalkers.

Parturition

During the Red Festival, Nusumu is inundated with love letters; as many of them seems stiff and formal, even generic, and Nusumu hardly knows any of the local young people, she can only imagine that these aren't serious, but Raii assures her they aren't a joke, either; the youths of the Palace probably intended to affirm Nusumu as an attractive young lady and 'one of them.'

Ascent

As the Palace roars back into activity after the relative quiet of the winter months, Nusumu may begin to feel alone again, homesick for Gaia.

All Year

Nusumu will likely become quite familiar with the Imperial Kitchens; consisting of several large kitchens with an enormous staff, they do not feed an Imperial family but a huge number of courtiers, officials, and Palace residents; most days they prepare large quantities of food and deliver it to the various sections of the 'Lower Palace,' the enclosed, almost-village-sized part of the grounds that are inhabited and used. Perhaps not as glamorous as the name 'Imperial Kitchens' would suggest -- though they do prepare banquets for important events, at least once every two weeks.

Nusumu may widely explore the Lower Palace, but no matter how sneaky she is, it is unlikely she will be able to reach the 'Upper Palace' -- not because of guards, but because most of it seems to be elevated off the ground, held up by huge pillars, with no visible means of accessing the walkways.

It is a very disappointed Nusumu that hurries back to the room Shinkou and Raii have allowed her to use. She sits on the bed and rests her head in her hands, her thoughts tumbling over each other willy-nilly.

She thought she had gotten used to this place, at least a little bit. She did so want to try learning new things... it is the reason she came, after all. School had never occurred to her, but when Shinkou brought up the topic, she pounced on it. What better way could there be to find out more about the world?

And yet, her lack of an education prevents her from getting an education. Nusumu had never placed much stock in the written word before. What she can read of Gaian she taught herself; most of her cookbooks are filled with illustrations and photos of the individual steps and finished products. But these books are completely different. Even the letters are different! There is no way Nusumu could hope to decipher any of it on her own... and therefore, no way for her to attend a school that teaches from books.

Nusumu is bitterly disappointed with that fact. However, she is even more disappointed in herself. Girls younger than she is- even if they do not appear to be- can do things that she cannot with no problems. People who have had less time to learn know more than she does. Her lack of "conventional" knowledge had never bothered her much, but now she feels outclassed at every angle. All of these Silver World girls are more refined, more intelligent than she is. But then, so are Gongjin and Jilan and Tsubei... and even little Shuuken, she suspects. And what is Nusumu? A sneaky chef. That had always been all that Nusumu hoped to be. When she compares herself to anyone else, however, she always comes out lower. When did her values change like this? She does love being a sneaky chef, but when surrounded by illustrious comrades, she wonders what she hoped to accomplish, why she came to this place at all.

Shinkou stands in Nusumu's doorway, but does not cross into her room. Instead she simply waits for when Nusumu is ready.

Even in her distressed state, Nusumu can't help but notice that she's being watched. After a few seconds of trying to ignore it, she looks up and brusquely asks if Shinkou has nothing better to do than spy on her. If she must, she should at least hide herself better.

Shinkou is grateful for the advice. She is also sorry if Nusumu is upset-

Nusumu is not upset! She is... confused, she insists, hastily rubbing her eyes with her sleeve. It is nothing important.

That is a relief to hear, Shinkou replies. In that case, if Nusumu is willing to spare a moment, Shinkou has an idea she would like to discuss.

Nusumu does not reply. She is curious as to what the woman is thinking, but also worried. What if she suggest Nusumu go to a school for younger children? Her pride could not take that, she is certain.

Although they do not know each other well yet, Shinkou has seen that Nusumu is a young woman of many talents. Especially, she has been pleased to learn, in the kitchen. And so Shinkou proposes the idea of a pseudo-apprenticeship; though Nusumu is (physically) too young for a proper one, there is still much she can learn. And the cooks always need young ones to help with errands and delivering-

Again, Nusumu interrupts, this time angrily. Nusumu is not an errand girl! She may not be a true chef just yet, but she will not be reduced to fetching and carrying.

Mildly, Shinkou agrees. But there are also tasks in the kitchen that may be suited to Nusumu's skills. If she would like, she can see for herself, and decide then.

It is a tempting offer. Nusumu hesitates, unsure how to respond. She would love to work in the kitchen, instead of simply watching and waiting. And to have a real job, a real purpose...

It would not be any better than her job at home, another part of her insists. The job she hates. The job that makes her hate cooking, and that makes her hate herself when she realizes she feels this way. Nusumu did not escape one torture only to enter another.

But it would be different, says another part. She would be doing this because she wants to, not for money. And more importantly, she would be learning from real chefs. True, her tasks might be simple and repetitive, but she can plan for the future. Even better, if it is off the record, so to speak, it will leave plenty of time for exploring.

Very well. Nusumu will try this apprenticeship thing. But if she doesn't like it, she will find something else.

Rather than look pleased or upset, Shinkou simply nods. She will leave Nusumu alone, then, and make the arrangements.

Nusumu is not sure she wants to be alone, but she does not mention anything of the sort. She is not sure she wants to be with Shinkou, either. Although her tutor has been nothing if not kind and generous, it unsettles Nusumu. While she has tried, she is sure that she has not always been kind... and remembering her behavior of the past few minutes, she almost feels abashed. Sneaky would certainly scold her if she behaved that way at home. Anyone would. Except, it seems, for Shinkou.

How does she do it, Nusumu wonders? How is she not upset by the things others say? How can she continue to be so kind to her- and to everyone that Nusumu has seen Shinkou with- without tiring or feeling hurt? It reminds Nusumu of other people from her childhood, people who always seemed "too nice" to Nusumu. If they were too nice, Shinkou is nicer than all of them. It is not a bad thing, but it is... unsettling.

Wishing to test something, Nusumu hurries into the main room of Shinkou's apartment. She must get to the bottom of this!

The woman is still there, putting things into a basket. When she sees Nusumu, she smiles. Is there something else that Shinkou can do for Nusumu?

Taking a deep breath, Nusumu plunges in. Nusumu wants pizza for dinner!

Shinkou's expression changes; she is not upset, but confused. She has never heard of this 'pizza' dish. Is it native to Nusumu's homeland?

It is, Nusumu confirms. And very delicious. She keeps her hands clasped behind her back, so that Shinkou cannot see them shaking. And she must have some tonight, she insists!

Considering this, Shinkou smiles again. Though she has never prepared this 'pizza' before, is she correct in assuming that Nusumu has? If so, perhaps she can teach Shinkou how to make it. She is certain that they can improvise something delicious.

Gaping, Nusumu can only nod. This is not quite going the way she planned.

Wonderful! Shinkou looks forward to learning all she can from Nusumu. Now, if she may, she must deliver this before it gets too late.

Nusumu barely even feels Shinkou leave. Her mind is occupied, processing the scene, and many other like it. There is only one conclusion to be drawn. Nusumu does not like it, nor what it implies. She must take action, but she does not like that either. She does like Shinkou, but if anything, her unease has grown significantly. There is only one thing to be done.

Shinkou will have to be watched. ninja

The kitchens are always buzzing with activity, but the past month has been even busier. Although Nusumu wants to explore more thoroughly, she knows when it is time to experiment, and when she would be better off watching. Early in her stay she found a niche, between a set of shelves and counter space, where she can be out of the way and still see everything. When she hunches down, she cannot be seen unless someone is looking for her, which makes it all the more perfect for her tastes.

Today, however, Nusumu is not hiding. She is watching carefully, her fingers itching to knead the rice dough she sees others working with. One thing she learned very quickly is how different cuisine is in the Silver World. They do not have microwave ovens or toasters or instant ramen. They do not even use milk, and even laughed a bit when Nusumu asked about it. She was quite surprised to learn that most adult Porcelain are highly allergic to milk, and thinks back to the last time she made pudding. She was somewhat ill that night. Though she hopes it was a coincidence, Nusumu is concerned... but chooses not to dwell on those thoughts now.

The differences in ingredients and techniques have been an obstacle for Nusumu, but not an insurmountable one the way her inability to read is. She has quickly learned the basics of what she can and cannot do, and the limits of her existing knowledge. Now she is content to learn the rest from scratch, as all those her age must do.

As she reflects on this, Nusumu can feel someone watching her. Perturbed, she turns around- and freezes as she takes in a taller, very stern-looking woman. Her hands and clothing are covered with flour, as are most cooks. This one, however, wears the powder like a badge of honor.

When Nusumu fails to reply, the woman bristles. Did this one think she could get off just by watching, when the kitchens are at their busiest? If this is what she signed up for, she can leave! Shoyo's pastries do not need the help of those who are unwilling.

Though confused, Nusumu protests. She is not unwilling! Can this Shoyo not feel her desire to be in there with the cooks, to help, to create something of her own? But Nusumu was told not to get in the way, and so that is what she is doing.

Shoyo places her hands on her hips, expressing some doubt, and also curiosity at who could have given an apprentice those unhelpful directions. But no matter. If Nusumu is truly willing, she will come with Shoyo and divide her dough into individual portions to be baked. Then the fruit to stuff them with needs to be stirred and put over the fire. Knives are there, and paper to separate the bunches. Shoyo points out each of the materials needed for this project, but does not demonstrate how to do what she is asking.

And Nusumu is concerned. From Shoyo's projections, it is clear the chef is assuming something about her that is not true. Although she would not mind being a fully-fledged apprentice of the kitchen, the fact remains that she is not- and therefore is not required to follow demands from other cooks.

But Shoyo is offering her the chance to cook! And not just anything, but pastries, desserts, Nusumu's favorite! How can Nusumu resist this? And furthermore, how can she decline without insulting the clearly important chef?

The answer in the end is that she cannot. Meekly, Nusumu follows Shoyo to her workspace and, taking a small knife in trembling hands, begins to divide an enormous batch of rice dough into small, workable portions. Eventually her hands calm down and the comfortable feeling of working with food washes over her. This is something Nusumu can do. Perhaps the methods are slightly different, but Nusumu has prepared desserts before. She can follow directions. She will be fine.

Shoyo watches her for a few minutes, correcting her when she makes a mistake, but otherwise silent. When she is satisfied that Nusumu is not mangling the dough, she goes back to her own work, taking the sliced dough and deftly shaping it into perfect tiny circles, ready to be filled with jam.

The two work like that for some time before Shinkou comes by to see how Nusumu is doing. While pleased that she has found something to do, she is mildly surprised to find her working under Shoyo, whom she recalls preferring to work with more experienced apprentices.

Keeping her head down, Nusumu keeps working. She knows what is coming, but wants to finish her job, at the very least. She doubts that another like this will come her way.

Although polite to Shinkou, Shoyo is a bit grouchy. Times are busy, she reminds Shinkou, and help is not easy to come by. Most of the apprentices were busy with other tasks, so when Shoyo found one slacking off, she was all too happy to put her to work.

And now Shinkou understands. She looks at Nusumu, who is pointedly avoiding all eye contact and doggedly cutting the last of the dough. Then she smiles, and carefully explains to Shoyo that Nusumu is not an apprentice per se, but an observer. Though if she continues under such esteemed tutelage, it is clear that she will have other cooks clamoring for her before long.

Shoyo is surprised and embarrassed, but looks at Nusumu evenly. Why did Nusumu not tell her this from the beginning? Why follow her directions, even though she was only there to watch?

Nusumu finishes slicing the last bit of dough before meeting Shoyo's eyes. Nusumu did not think she had a decent opportunity to explain, and even if she did, Shinkou did a much better job. More importantly, Shoyo claimed that Nusumu had to prove her willingness. Did she not just do that? What does it matter that she is not, in the strictest of terms, apprenticed to the kitchens? Nusumu is there to learn, and she will do so in whatever way is offered to her. Unless, of course, Shoyo is displeased with her work, which is another matter entirely.

Staring, Shoyo is again surprised, this time by Nusumu's boldness. But then she begins to laugh. She is sorry for demanding a certain behavior out of Nusumu without waiting for the truth. Now, however, she is almost disappointed.

Afraid, Nusumu bows respectfully. Nusumu does want to cook, she really does! If there is anything she can do that will not be in the way, that will help Shoyo in her duties-

Abruptly Shoyo shakes her head. That is not what she meant. She is simply disappointed that all of the apprentices do not show such zeal in their work.

Then, before Nusumu can react, the laughter is gone. Shoyo cannot personally depend on someone who is not truly attached to the kitchens. However... in these busy times, if Nusumu would like to lend her help, Shoyo is sure that there will be work suitable for her. Though Nusumu's skills are not honed, she shows promise, and Shoyo would like to see this fruit again when it is ripe.

Truly honored, Nusumu bows again. She will do the best she can to ripen well, though she is not sure how much say fruit has in that process.

Shoyo laughs again, and waves Nusumu out of her way. There is still much to do, and she cannot hold Shinkou up either. Without another word, she returns to her task, her demeanor serious once more.

While she does have her own work to do, Shinkou spares another bit of her time to take Nusumu aside. Is she okay? She hopes Nusumu did not take any of Shoyo's gruffness to heart; it is still busy and they are all under duress. Still, it must have gone well enough, for Nusumu to receive such a compliment.

When Nusumu looks up, she is positively glowing with delight. Less so at the compliment, which was appreciated but matters little to her in the long run. No, she is ecstatic at the prospect of further hands-on experience. For if Shoyo is right, and she will be allowed to help, what a leap forward her learning has taken!

Shinkou smiles at Nusumu. Perhaps then, since Shinkou is not yet finished here, Nusumu would like to help her? She can always use the help, but Nusumu did not ask, and Shinkou did not want to assume she always wanted to work...

Predictably, Nusumu pounces on the chance. Even if it is not dessert, Nusumu would love to work! What can she do?

One can practically see smoke coming from Nusumu's head as she stomps through the small apartment of Shinkou and Raii and throws herself on the bed. In her hands is a book, the simplest thing she could find at the library. Shinkou has been kind enough to try and teach Nusumu what she knows, but Shinkou is not a scholar, and Nusumu is not the best student. The best she can do is recognize certain characters, but she cannot remember their meanings, or put any of them together. With that little knowledge, she knows she might as well try to read patterns in cake batter. So why does she insist on putting herself through this torture periodically?

She continues because there is no other way she will learn, she reminds herself. Even if Nusumu cannot read now, that does not mean she never will. Could she always cook? Of course not. She got where she is through many, many failures. If she tries to read, one day she will be able to, right?

Still, that is no excuse for the behavior of the librarians, who were stunned to hear that she could not read, and proceeded to treat her with painful kindness. One offered to read to her, while another suggested she just go out and play. Neither even entertained the thought that she might be trying to learn! She did not expect them to try to teach her, but they needn't have dismissed her efforts. They acted like she shouldn't even bother trying!

Enraged all over again, Nusumu sits up and throws the book across the room. It sails in an arc, nearly missing a large box that hadn't been there before, and lands on the floor near the door. Nusumu eyes the box. It is very pretty, but she is sure it was not there that morning. It takes all of five seconds for her to approach it and start opening the drawers.

For a split second she is puzzled, her mind still fried from hours of failed studies. Then she lets out a shriek of excitement. She has used these before! Some spices are similar to ones she is used to, while others are completely different and her only knowledge of them comes from what she has observed. Still others are completely foreign, not even used in the kitchens thus far. None of the trays are very large, but since the spices are supposed to be used in small amounts, Nusumu predicts that she can make it last a long time, if she is careful.

Shinkou appears in the doorway of Nusumu's room, Raii hovering behind her. They both project concern; is Nusumu alright? They heard her scream, and worry that something happened. Is she hurt? Was she studying too hard?

Although it pains her, Nusumu tears herself away from the box to launch herself at the couple, trying to wrap her small arms around them both. The box is absolutely wonderful and Nusumu does not know how she will ever thank Shinkou and Raii for it, but she is extremely grateful and would do whatever she can to try! How did they know she needed something to cheer her up? It is truly fantastic!

The two exchange a confused glance, and Shinkou asks what this box is that Nusumu is speaking of. As well as expressing pleasure at the hug, but the feeling that they might all be more comfortable if Nusumu let go and showed them her prize.

Pleased to have an excuse to look at it again, Nusumu shows them the box. The spices aside, the box itself is really splendid, carved with flowers that Nusumu suspects may be the source of some of these spices. The wood is highly polished, and the box is sturdily constructed. But it is really the spices that are special. Nusumu makes a great show of displaying them, showing which are her favorites, and thanking Shinkou and Raii after every new thought.

But after a few moments, Shinkou gently interjects. While she is pleased that Nusumu has found something she is so excited about... neither Shinkou nor Raii can be thanked for it, since they are both as surprised as Nusumu.

Nusumu's thoughts trail off, and she looks at her hosts, then the box, and then solely at Shinkou with a trace of suspicion. How can this be? It is Shinkou's house, who else could leave it there for her?

Shinkou is equally confused about that (and slightly troubled), but she insists that they had no part in it. She pauses and smiles. Perhaps Nusumu has a secret admirer?

Frowning, Nusumu looks back at the box. She still adores it, but she does not like secrets- at least, not when they are being kept from her. And she has no need of secret admirers, when she already has her someone special. But she is grateful to whoever gave this to her. Shinkou and Raii are sure it was not them?

Very sure, Shinkou repeats. But she doesn't think that should stop Nusumu from enjoying her gift, as surely the sender wants her to do just that.

Nusumu is as comfortable with that idea. But as Shinkou and Raii leave her to her business, the box seems to watch her. And soon she knows that she cannot just ignore it. It seems to be calling out to her.

But she knows she cannot just blindly accept it, either. And so Nusumu prepares to investigate. The number of mysteries she is looking into has just increased by one.

Nusumu departs Shinkou's apartment, a grim expression on her face as she prepares for another duel with the libraries. It cannot be impossible to gather information from these! With very little help, she taught herself to read Gaian! Surely she must be able to learn this as well. It is supposed to be her native language, or so everyone seems to assume.

But another voice reminds Nusumu that the books she has at home are cookbooks, full of photos and diagrams alike to show what the words mean. And she cannot put together a word based on the letters that make it up. It is more that she has come to recognize certain combinations of letters as meaning certain things. If she is shown a picture and a word enough times, she will learn. That is how she has functioned.

These books, however, are not as helpful. While some may have patterns and illustrations, they are more frequently meant as simple decoration. They certainly do not correspond the way they do in her cookbooks. There is no way for her to learn words without learning the symbols they are comprised of. And so far, no one she can trust with this dilemma has been willing to help.

Princess could probably help. Jilan certainly could, were she to ask. But these two have their own work to take care of for their important mission. She cannot ask them to spend the large amount of time it would take to teach her to read. Shinkou and Raii have been kind- too kind- already. If Nusumu were to ask them, she would only feel still more indebted to them, which is not a particularly attractive situation. That, and they are both busy as well. The librarians have proven to be useless. And she cannot think of anyone else.

Nusumu looks up and exhales heavily. As she does so, she hears movement behind her. A curious, dreading feeling comes over her, and she slowly turns around, keeping her gaze wide and vacant. Despite wishing otherwise, she knows what she will find.

As soon as they see her turn, a few anxious young men scatter. One hides behind a curtain, though the lumps underneath it and his shoes at the bottom make his presence obvious. Another ducks behind a short partition blocking off another section of hallway, the top of his head still quite visible. Still another ducks into another room, careful to keep watching, while two more fight for space behind a column. As Nusumu vacantly watches, they are both quite startled and jostle even more. The taller of the two claims the spot as his own, while the other, anxious and embarrassed, runs past Nusumu and out of sight.

Nusumu sighs, wishing she could do something. The first few times she tried to talk to these strange stalkers, they all acted like that, running away like her noticing them was the last thing they wanted to happen. Then, as the days grew shorter still, they became a little bolder. They would ignore any questions, trying very hard to pretend they were not there. But if she looked straight at any one of them, off they would go. The best way to avoid scaring them was to look at everything in general, without making eye contact. But then she would be left trailing an entourage down the hallways, hardly convenient when in a hurry or squeezing into aisles at the library.

Didn't these boys have anything better to do than follow a stranger around? she projected firmly. She does not want to hurt them, so why do they not approach her?

Another boy- the one behind the partition- loses what little cool he has. In a storm of emotions, he runs away, leaving three there who are getting more and more nervous by the second.

Frustrated, Nusumu abruptly sits down in the middle of the hallway. She earns some strange looks from passerby, but at least this she is used to. She has no idea what these people want from her. If there is something she can do for them, they should ask! And if not, why do they follow her like lonely puppies, and then run away if she so much as looks at them? If they do not want her to look, they should do a proper job of hiding-

Sudden inspiration strikes Nusumu, and she grins mischievously. If that is what they are after, perhaps a demonstration is in order.

Before anyone can blink, Nusumu is on her feet again. Her eyes dart to and fro, still carefully avoiding the eyes of her followers. After a moment's consideration, she darts into a nearby room.

Puzzled, quaking in their shoes, the boys wonder whether they should follow. The tall one behind the pillar is the first to try, followed by the other two. They have gone this far, and if she is moving, maybe she really didn't notice them yet...!

Then, upon entering the other room, they are even more perplexed. It appears to be a lesser office of some sort, and is currently abandoned. While such offices are frequently empty, the person they followed in there is nowhere to be seen. There are no other doors in the office, or even windows. Exchanging confused glances, the three begin poking around, but cannot find her.

Nusumu bides her time, waiting for the right moment. When all of her remaining stalkers have exhausted her search, she clears her throat. At first she is amused when the searchers do not know what to think, but after several long moments of no attention, she crosses her arms. Up here!

Finally they look and find Nusumu perched atop a bookcase. It is not a terribly tall bookcase, but tall enough that a person lying prone can go unnoticed- especially when the bookcase is not opposite the door, but adjacent to it. The shelves are close enough together that Nusumu could climb it with little trouble, given the practice she's had.

These are the things one must consider when choosing a hiding place, she instructs them. Not to choose someplace obvious, and to be aware of where others will look first. Make oneself as small as possible. Or else, simply be natural. Someone watching will look for people acting suspicious, and hiding or acting too obviously innocuous will only draw more attention.

Now, if these ones insist on following Nusumu, will they at least hide properly?

... or better yet, speak to them when she asks?

For several moments, during most of Nusumu's lecture, the boys are too stunned to react. When she addresses them directly again, two of them are frightened into leaving without so much as a word. The last one, the same tall one from before, holds his ground for a minute.

... This one offers thanks for the advice.

Then his emotions overcome him and, like the others, he takes off.

And Nusumu is left alone again. Sighing, she swings her legs back and forth listlessly. Why they are acting this way is still beyond her. But if she managed to teach at least one of them a little about the art of the sneaky, perhaps her work is finished for the day.
