"Illness?" she seemed to consider this for a moment or two, stopping her mild tugging at his hand, "I... don't know. Do you really think so?" it was a rhetorical question, and mostly said out of her need to talk. It was clear that while the large Ba'al was pretty content in silence, Una was used to babbling and rambling about the tiniest of things. Half of the time, she didn't even seem to need answers, but rather, filled the silence with her words, pointing out how pretty this or that tree was, or how colorful this particular world's sky was. Most of what she spoke of was trivial, and yet there was the rare occasion when she was able to give out some random piece of insight that others had missed.

The idea of a contagious illness was rather scary though, and something Una felt she probably should report. Thus, the need to go to the Djardi side of the caravan was even more pressing.

"We should," illness was something that should always be reported. Almost as soon as she was about to start walking, his hand came down to pat her head, and unconsciously, she felt herself leaning right into it. Had she been a feline, it was probable she would have purred on the spot. The effect was broken slightly at his next words though, and the small Ursari turned her head to look up at him, her green eyes blinking owlishly. For a moment, she remain in that pose and then, the smile was back, but this time, there was clear mirth there, "I'm not an apprentice," she told him, "I'm a journey man - my dance has cured many sick Ba'al before. That's why I'm a bit baffled," still looking up at him, she rubbed the back of her head awkwardly with one hand, "I guess I really am short."

Of course, then again, not only was she short, but so giddy and cheerful that she usually came across as childish.

Daevan stared down at Una. He bent slightly at the waist for a closer inspection. Huge green eyes, round face, shorter than most teenagers he knew, and still with baby pudge on her frame. Everything added up to a child - definitely not to a journeyman.

"Did you reach journeyman status very young?" he asked. It wasn't that he didn't believe her, just that it was so hard to doubt his own eyes. "You look..." he paused, sure that this was not going to make Una happy, "... twelve."

Twelve at the very most.

An index finger rubbed his nose, just as awkward as Una about the misunderstanding. Although, if she really was a journeyman, then seeing another Djardi likely would not result in anything other than more wasted time - and money. Money that Daevan did not have to spare.

"Maybe it will pass," he suggested, shrugging his shoulders. "We should wait and see before causing a panic."

Those round, green eyes blinked up at him as he inspected her, but other than that, Una seemed perfectly fine with his inspection of her, "No," came her first answer, "I reached it a bit late, actually," a pause, "I have... uh... I'm prone to being distracted easily. Or so my Tutor used to say. So it took me a just a tad more time. Not much though," despite his words, she didn't look insulted. In fact, she still looked vaguely amused, "I'm seventeen," another pause, "Almost eighteen," looking down on herself, she wrinkled her nose, "I guess I really am short," it was repeated again before she looked up at him, "Is that bad?" then, feeling the need to elaborate, continued, "That I look young and am short, I mean."

At his suggestion, the small sheep stopped and considered, "Maybe you're right..." regardless however, she'd been taught that she should, in fact, report such things, and thus going back to the Djardi section was imperial to her. Even if leaving his side did not sound like an appealing idea. Idly, she stored that thought away for later musing before she let go of his hand (something which she regretted quite instantly), "I still need to go tell my father. And my sisters. Just in case," Una took that moment to bend her torso slightly into a sheepish bow. As soon as she'd straightened up, she smiled at him, "Besides, they will be wondering where I am. I kind of stormed off in a bit of a rage."

As she talked, she took a step back, her eyes still on him, "I'll..." and here she hesitated, as if unsure of what to say, "I'll see you later then!" pleased that those words sounded at least good enough that it didn't make the sensations at the pit of her stomach constrict at her very throat, Una turned away to leave, making her way towards the Djardi section of the Caravan. Almost as if an after thought (and for whatever reason), she turned to look over her shoulder when she was a way away and waved back at him, "You should go lay down!" then, she rushed off.

Almost eighteen? Daevan's eyes were ready to pop out of his skull. He resisted the urge to check again if she was sure. Of course she was sure, it was her own age. Even his thick skull could get that.

"Uh, no," he stammered. His eyes flickered from side to side, startled at being asked if someone else was good or bad. History dictated that he be the one in that position, being told. He wouldn't wish it anyone else. "No, Una is fine being Una. Um."

He scratched behind one ear. Talk about embarrassing conversations for someone who normally hated to have them.

Una took advantage of his stunned state to leave in a whirlwind of activity and speech. Which matched with everything he'd seen of her since their meeting... was it only less than an hour ago? Part of him felt like he'd known her for far longer.

Bemused at the sudden departure, and advice for his health, Daevan turned back the way he'd originally been heading. He would be late back to the Ba'al camp, and no doubt facing a heavy load of teasing from his wife for lagging so far behind her. At least if she asked how his day had been, he had something interesting to tell her.

As he walked, his stomach began to settle. By the time he reached his own caravan, the feeling was gone entirely, leading him to dismiss it entirely. It would come back to haunt him another day.

A light jingling sound had followed Una as she walked upon the field, picking a particularly concealed place, as far away from others' gazes as she could. The chill night air still carried over the sounds of the nearby caravan, and hidden away from the other Ursari, the small Djardi turned a large , rusty, coppery looking bell in her hands. The artifact produced a healthy chiming sound as it moved, even despite it's rusted looks, ironically proving that it was the inside that mattered, not the outside. So long the inside of the bell was fine, it would always produce fine music.

Letting a soft sigh escape her lips, the sheep like Ursari ran her fingers over the metal surface, still producing that chiming sound every single time she moved; the bells attached to her clothes made sure that not one of her movements went wasted, as far as music went. For the first time in a very long time however, Ùna was pretty much ignoring the sound and was instead, focusing on her own thoughts. It was rare for her to take a moment to think, but the past few days, during which she'd been the protagonist of quite a few rumours had not made her feel quite up to par. Not because she felt bad that she was the protagonist of said rumours, but rather, that she'd fallen prey to believing them a while back, when they'd been about Loman. Now, after time spent around the other Djardi, she'd come to notice that they were all just that; rumours.

Her sisters had told her that the dark, blunt healer was eerie. That he locked himself up within his caravan and that he practiced with poisons, rather than with cures; that surely, this meant he was evil, and thus, subsequently, whomever married him would be doomed. Needless to say, being fated to marry the other Ursari meant she'd had to go meet him, and while it was true the male was blunt and perhaps just a bit too loud for his own good, he was not violent. It was also true that he tampered with poisons, but that did not mean he was particularly dangerous or that he had poisoned anyone, which meant that instantly, Ùna had felt horribly, horribly guilty for her previous dread and thoughts.

She still didn't want to marry him; true enough, but the reasons behind that thought had changed. In fact, the small sheep wasn't even quite sure why she didn't want to marry Loman, though thinking about the issue always brought forth Daevan's features into her mind's eye. Ùna had swiftly decided this was her mind's way of telling her she simply needed to go find her new friend and leave her problems behind. Today though, and after the tantrum she'd managed to throw within the Djardi camp, she didn't even feel like seeking out the Ba'al. She just wished to sit there and... well, she wasn't really sure what she wanted, at this point. Lightly, she gave the bell in her hands another shake, watching the pale moonlight reflect off from the few places the rust had not eaten up.

The heat of the day had finally lifted, having lingered even after the sun set. Daevan was glad for the cool breeze that finally began to blow through the Caravan. Searching the entire camp was bad enough without doing it in the heat. The stares of amazement, curiosity, amusement, and - from some - outright hostility, were enough make him sweat without the temperature trying to help.

He walked briskly by stalls and caravans, ignoring the wares for sale, intent only his search. It was the first day since he and Una met that they hadn't seen each other, either by accident or a planned meeting. Somehow they seemed to gravitate towards each other, a fact that hadn't gone unnoticed or unremarked upon by a fair portion of the Caravan.

"Aw, lost your little sheep?" a mocking voice rang out from a nearby stall.

A frown of worry morphed into an outright glare. He turned to give the speaker the full effect, but faltered when he saw the man who'd spoken. A Veduni. Daevan's top lip wavered, alternatively trying to pull up in a snarl before he caught it and smoothed his lips out again. The idea of replying to the insult to Una faded completely. He settled on intensifying his fearsome expression before continuing on his way. If he moved a little faster than before, onlookers hopefully took it for worry for his search and not a desire to avoid the Veduni.

Reaching the end of another street of stalls and having still no sign of the little black sheep, Daevan huffed to himself. His hooves stilled as he tried to think of places he hadn't tried yet. Suddenly his ears began to p***k up. The night wind carried the faint sound of chimes. It never crossed his mind that it could have been another Ursari with bells or wind chimes of some description. He was certain it was Una, and so he followed the melody.

Soon enough, he approached an outcropping of bushes a short distance from the edge of camp. Still no sign of life, but his ears didn't lie - the chiming sounded like it was right next to him. He edged his way between plants and found himself in a small clearing that was surrounded by thick bushes, hiding its occupant from view.

On the ground sat the object of his search, playing with a bell in her lap. She was bent over and her usual cheerful expression was missing.

Daevan shifted uncomfortably. He was never sure what to say to most people, which resulted in saying nothing at all. For some reason, that was never an option around Una. Forcing himself to say something - anything - he asked, "Are you alright?"
PostPosted: Sat Nov 08, 2008 5:37 pm

It was amusing to note that she had been so far out of it that she didn't even notice Daevan's approach. In fact, she didn't notice his presence till he spoke. Her reaction was comical; Ùna ears perked slightly and she jumped a bit, her hands losing their grip upon the large bell they'd been holding. The artifact in question fell off her lap then, landing with a soft 'clunk' like sound on the soft grass. For a moment it almost looked as if the girl was about to lie and tell him that everything was alright, that there was nothing to worry about.

Something within her snapped though, and rather than offering him the tirade she'd rehearsed in her mind, Ùna found herself whimpering pathetically, "I... no. I'm not," after a pause, during which she worried the edges of her dress, she continued, "I kind of... headbutted this girl. I... rammed my head into her. I think I might have kicked her too. I'm not sure," the words came out in a rush, a bit of a ramble. Needless to say, such confessions were weird coming from such a small, cheerful thing, alas, the lamb was not yet done, "I was so angry," she continued, "Then I was scolded and after that, I came here."

In her defense... well, actually, she didn't have anything to say in her defense, and that single notion made her look miserable as she looked up at him, "She was saying you were dirty and you never bathe... and I think she said other things, but I kind of was too busy ramming my head into her to remember..." the small Djardi began to worry her hands together as she finished her tirade. All in all, she didn't mind being the protagonist of rumours, but she'd swiftly found out that when they focused on Daeven, they sparked her temper. Despite that, no sooner had she gotten all that off her chest that she let out a sigh of relief, as if voicing all that out loud had made her feel quite a bit better, "That feels better."

Daevan dropped to the ground when he saw Una's sad expression. Not that he thought he'd be any good at comforting her, but maybe just listening could help. Or he could offer to come along with her and growl at whoever hurt her. He knew actually hurting them would just get him into trouble, but his walks through the camp today had proved that people were still scared of him.

Worry turned to surprise as Una recounted her tale of attacking someone. Not something he would have expected from the tiny Djardi. He was actually very impressed - the healer had some warrior in her after all.

"I'm ... dirty?" Daevan blinked. Of all the insults ever directed his way, that was one he hadn't heard before. He raised his arm and stared at it. "I'm not as pale as some, but I would have said I was still on the lighter side."

And as for not bathing... Daevan sniffed at his raised arm. Smelled fine to him. The only time he didn't bathe was if he was out on assignment to a battlefield, and that was only due to lack of time and facilities. Otherwise, if the Ba'al weren't fond of bathing, they'd all be running around caked in dried blood and gore.

About to pat Una's head to reassure her that he didn't care, he changed his mind and went for her shoulder instead. The last time he'd patted her head had been when he thought she was twelve. She might think he was still treating her like a kid (even if sometimes forgot and still thought of her that way), and since he was down on her level, might as well aim for somewhere different.

"So you ran away and hid here, in a place no one knows exists?" Huh. Maybe Una wanted to be alone, then. Daevan should go. Except he made no move to leave. His body once again overrode his mind and remained with Una.

Well, he didn't mind too much.
PostPosted: Sat Nov 08, 2008 7:04 pm

Her eyes widened as he spoke, and she moved her arms, "No, no! You're not dirty! And... and you don't smell!" a pause, "At least not badly anyhow, that's why I was mad! It was a lie! And they've been tossing them at me all week,"she shut her mouth them, pretty much aware she was near sounding like a petulant child. All she had to do was stomp her foot for effect. Letting out a sigh, she ran a hand over her features, brushing away the unshed tears of her earlier frustration.

The pat on her arm seemed to wake her up from whatever dark crevice of her mind she seemed to be visiting and slowly, she turned to look up at him. The wheels and gears in her head began to move then, and the small Djardi found herself frowning in mild confusion, "Well... yes," the answer to his question was said slowly, with a bit of hesitation, "But I'm glad you found me, because I kind of feel better now," still, she had not yet deemed it the right time to open and peek into that particular can of worms. Even after a week, she had not yet explored on why it was his presence made her feel so much better. It was around that point that the metaphorical wheels in her mind made a particularly loud 'clunk', "But... how did you find me? No one else has found me... how did you know I was here?"

It was a particularly good question, really. It was amusing how they had managed to find each other, stumble into each other and otherwise simply gravitate around each other since that first meeting. The whys were not explored, but the fact it felt 'right', for whatever reason, was always present. Her hands stopped their restless movement against her garments and slowly reached out to take the large bell off the floor, flopping it back on her lap, where it jingled once more for all answer.

Daevan scratched his head, not quite sure why she was so upset people were saying he was dirty. While untrue, it wasn't half as bad as some things that had been said about him before. Half the Ursari outside of the Ba'al thought he a cruel man with a sharp temper, and Daevan had never been tempted to correct them. He didn't really care what they said about him anymore. Unless they were criticising his work, that was.

When Una asked how he had found her, the corners of his lips turned up. It may have resembled a smirk, but honestly he was just feeling amused, like his answer was a small jest. "I just followed the bells."

Her bells and chimes had a distinctive note that he was learning to recognise. He hadn't been fooled by a shop selling decorative metal and wooden wind chimes in the markets, the melodies had been too dissonant and jarring to belong to the dancing healer. Of course, it wasn't like he suddenly had a great ear for musical instruments, either, couldn't tell others apart from a fig. For some reason, he just knew Una's music.

"But it took me a while to find them," he mumbled, eyes inspecting the grass, the foliage around them, anything but Una herself. "I was looking through camp... most of the day..."
PostPosted: Sun Nov 09, 2008 6:26 am

Well aware that she was being slightly illogical in her train of thought, the girl lowered her gaze back to the bell on her lap, giving it another mild poke. The chiming resounded just as Daevan's answer reached her ears, "My bells?" her eyes travelled up to gaze at him and then down to her lap, where the bell once more moved. For some reason, the idea that he'd managed to found that sound, trailing after it to find her, made her smile. The earlier problems were somewhat pushed aside to the back of her mind for the time being, giving way for the warmth she was so used to feeling around the Ba'al, "You followed my bells?" it made sense though; after all, Ùna was well aware she practically 'created' music whenever she moved. It was a fact she loved, for it always followed her... she was never alone thanks to it.

Again, the gears in her mind made a heavy clunk like sound as she pondered his words, "You mean... you were looking for me during the whole day?" for a moment, she sat still, and then, she took the large bell off from her lap, hoisting it up so she could offer it to him, "Here. I saw this and it reminded me of you. So I was going to give it to you," the large, rusty looking bell made another chiming sound as she held it up, "Because people say you look bad, and scary, but they just haven't looked inside. See? The bell makes the most beautiful sound, even though it looks bad. Because it's the inside what counts, not the outside."

Ùna would not have been able to tell anyone what had made her decide Daevan was not only not a threat, but desirable company. It was a feeling deep in her gut, and while she did not particularly understand it, she didn't seem in any rush to do so; it worked, it felt right... what was wrong with going along with her gut instinct? It was bound to be better than allowing herself to fall prey of rumours. She had decided for herself that she liked the tall, scary looking Ba'al, and thus, she went with her decision quite happily.

"Well, not like... I didn't..." Daevan was as close to blushing as he ever got, his cheeks a shade darker than usual. Thankfully, even as a child he'd never had his face go red when embarrassed. "It was more like... I was wandering the markets after I got paid today. And I passed some Aishe stalls and wondered where you were. And... then I just kind of kept wandering and looking for you."

There. The most embarrassed he'd ever been, and possibly the most talkative, as well. Or so he thought until Una gave him a bell and a speech.

Silent, he traced the bell with hesitant hands. A tentative ring proved the truth of Una's words - in regards to the bell, at least. His eyes slid sideways to regard Una with a more vulnerable look than he'd used since his childhood days. The effect made him look ... almost friendly.

Unsure of what to say, he simply replied, "Thank you. I'll take good care of it." He wasn't sure what she was saying was true, but he wouldn't argue with the first person to give him a gift without them being involved first. Besides... "You're a good person," he said, lips curling in a smile.

They shared a moment of comfortable silence before a thought occurred to Daevan. He gave a rumble of a laugh and rubbed at his nose . "My Leife is going to tease me madly over this. She already thinks I must have picked up another lover."
PostPosted: Mon Nov 10, 2008 4:54 am

"You didn't?" her head tilted to one side as he tried to explain himself, her left ear twitching slightly forward. For some reason, the whole procedure made him look awkward and almost adorable (or... as 'adorable' as an Ursari like Daevan could be; the word didn't really seem to fit him at that well). However, despite that, Ùna felt she could very much sympathise with what he was saying because she'd had similar thing happen to her as of late, "That's similar to me. At times, I do things, and then I am reminded of you; that's what this bell was about," she pointed at it with a finger, then blinked, "Anyhow, I get reminded of you and I just go find you."

Her hands were once more used to worry at the edges of her skirt; a habit she seemed to have when she felt nervous. In her honest opinion, it was therapeutic, in a way. Even while occupied doing that (and thus chiming, due to the bells attached to her dress), she did not miss the expression on the Ba'al's face, "You're welcome," she told him in return, feeling the sensation of butterflies at the pit of her stomach return tenfold. Unlike him, as soon as she was complimented, the dark sheep lowered her head and blushed rather obviously, "I think you're a very good person too. It doesn't matter what others say."

So busy was she with her thinking and her grabbing at the edges of her skirt, comfortably sitting in the silence that had accommodated itself around them... that she jumped a bit when Daevan laughed. He rarely laughed, and Ùna's head immediately snapped up to watch him, a smile of her own curling at her lips, for something about laughter had always made her thing it was contagious. Maybe it could even be used as medicine, she reasoned in her mind, "Leife?" she paused, frowning in mild confusion, "Your Leife? ... what's a Leife?" it was clear she wasn't entirely on the same train of thought as he was, "You have lovers?" blushing mildly, she poked her hands together, mostly because, well, she didn't have a lover, and though scheduled to be married... she wasn't wasn't even sure what that meant she'd have to do. Despite her lack of knowledge, she didn't feel all too comfortable knowing that, and she squirmed slightly, her ears having dropped a notch at some unknown feeling that surged within her; it wasn't the one she was acostumed to having around Daevan, and she found she didn't like this one.

It should have seemed strange, that they both were constantly drawn to seek one another out. Rare were the meetings that were truly a coincidence (crossing paths in the marketplace one time, or spying Una at work) - more frequent was a niggling thought to see where Una was. But Daevan was so caught up in the feelings that he never thought it odd to be thinking so often about an Ursari who was not a wife, lover, sibling, or fellow warrior.

"Leife?" Daevan scratched at the back of his head. While he never forgot that Una was not a Ba'al, for some reason he had assumed she had the knowledge that his Family did. "Leife is my wife."
