Becca considered her answer carefully, fully aware of Bea's disapproval radiating from the seat next to her. Finally, she announced, "Sixteen. I was too busy before that." Then she laughed, honesty getting the better of her. "I had the motorcycle, sweet pea. Still do."

Irelia's jaw dropped as Becca revealed a little tidbit about herself.
"You have a motorbike?!?" Irelia's voice rose at the end, sorta squeaking in her disbelief.
Irelia, much to her dismay, giggled at the mention of boys. And dating. God, she wondered briefly, am I going to have my head stuck up my a** so far that the Jonas Brothers seem like the most amazing of people?
Leaning forward, Irelia grasped the passenger headrest in front of her and smiled at Bea.
"So we're getting bras?" Irelia made a face, "Don't you call them instruments of torture? And god, don't worry about me Bea. Sex is... messy."
Irelia had lived all her life with the secrets of others in her head. Unfortunately for her, most secrets are about sex. Which was sort of uncomfortable when she was a child.

"Oh my god," said Wisp, sounding slightly shrill. "I can't believe you just said that out loud it's not like you've ever had any Iree!" She had subsided into giggles. "I can't believe you said that in front of Mom."
"Look," said Beatrix, dolefully, and Becca knew how hard it was for her to struggle out with: "Sex is a... perfectly natural... part of life, that you should only do with someone who you... really care about. When you're older than Evie," she added, giving a slightly stern glare at the mug, "God help me if you go home spouting this off to Jack. And... give me a hand, Rebecca."
"Was Grandpa Akili your first, Grandma?" said Wisp.

To her credit, Becca's face remained sweetly neutral as she focused on the road ahead. "He was my first and only true love," she answered solemnly. "I met him and that was that. I was a goner."
"And then they had Daddy!"
"Evie!" Becca giggled, thrown. "Well, yes. We had Jack after we fell in love. That's the right order, by the way, girls. Love first, then children."

"Its shocking how much people talk about waiting and how special it is, and its just two people exchanging fluids. And very messy emotions." Irelia said blithely, happy to finally be able to have her say about things that would have been shocking if she had said them as a child. Not that they weren't shocking now.
"Please don't tell us we have to wear promise rings, Bea. You know most of them get knocked up and somehow thats still ok with god."

As Wisp had a flood of giggles, their mother -- well, foster aunt in Irelia's case -- rubbed at her temples. "Yes," she deadpanned. "Promise rings. Rings for your virginity. -- Look, Rebecca was right: you should never do anything with anyone you don't care about deeply and who has already met me at least three times so I can talk about where they are going to go off to college to."
"That sounds pretty out of the ordinary," said Wisp.
"This is what I do in my house," said Bea firmly. "It was the same for Uncle Jack. Right, Becca?"

Silence greeted the question as Becca pretended to be deeply interested in finding a parking space. To Bea's horror, Evie proved that she was far more precocious and blunt than would've been acceptable in this situation. Gripping the edge of her glass, she leaned back in the direction of the girls and beamed. "She's not answering," she pointed out. "This means that she's trying to decide if she should lie or not. She's also biting her lip. She's thinking it should be a good lie."
"Evie!" Becca laughed weakly and shook her head. She slid the car into the open spot and put it in park. Then she twisted to face the girls (consequently, it meant she was not looking at Bea). "I never met half of Jack's dates," she admitted, "but I trusted him. He's got more consistent taste than his dad." She smirked. "Aside from me, Akili dated some real nightmares. Anyway, the important thing is to be safe, okay?" She fixed each girl in turn with a dark-eyed stare. "And remember that any guy would be lucky to date you. If he doesn't realize it, he's not worth it. Kick him to the curb."
