Mwokoti was surprised to hear what Alake had said. Hadn't the plan been just to tell him to stop wasting away, both in time and body, under this tree? The lioness hadn't seemed selfish to her. If she was she wouldn't have wanted Mwokoti to come out here with it. It was just... She didn't seem up to handling someone like this. She couldn't handle someone like this.
"Yes, Konja," the disguised goddess spoke softly. Carefully she moved him off and regained her balance, shaking off the dirt and general flith her coat had collected from having him pounce her. "I've got things to finish. Until then, you should stay with her."
Maybe one day, he'd realize she was never coming back to stay. It wasn't Mwokoti's obligation to be concerned about it after this. She had far too many things she was forced to stress over.

Konja froze. He tried really hard not to cry and upset his mother, but his eyes teared up anyway. Could he really be blamed? Years and years of waiting only to have her come back to say she was leaving again? Well... At least she had come back. Just like he'd told all those people who had called him names for waiting. She'd showed them! If she had secret work to finish, he would be a bad son to not support her.
"Okay, mama." It was hard to sound cheerful but he did. There was even a slight but still visible smile. Alake had been smart in instructing him to come with her. Had she not, he'd have simply waited under the tree forever, even if his "mother" had told him not to. "I'll wait for you anywhere."
And he would, but not today, because the rest of it was to be spent telling about all the things he'd seen, all the people he'd met.
