"'Cause my paws are bigger, that's why. Besides, you don't know what we're looking for." She spoke between shovels, the first few piles of dirt now drawing her slowly into the hole she was creating. Too distracted by her own pillaging, she did not notice Marakl attacking the bones she had dug up earlier.
"What from before?" She asked with some confusion, flailing her tail from side to side as she pulled herself out of the small makeshift hole. Say what you want about wild dogs- she thought, but they could dig like no one's business. "Of course treasure!"
"He might not look it, but Atreyu always has lots of good stuff. He finds them when he's off pouting. He used to give me things, but now he's still a sour-face. So ima find them. I mean, he got them for me anyways, so!" she shifted, rolling slightly in the dirt. "Things better then bones. Shiny things!"
"I'm sure enough for you too if we find it!"

He stuck his tongue out at Mar but didn't disagree. She had bigger paws, she would be able to dig faster. But it wouldn't always be that way, would it? One day he'd be all grown up and he could be the digger. He glanced at his little black paws, almost as if he were trying to will them into growing.
No such luck.
He lifted his ears and watched her digging. So...she was digging for treasure. He opened his mouth to disagree when a clod of dirt hit him square in the face. He leapt to his feet with a startled growl and shook his head furiously. "Watch where you're kickin' that dirt!" He complained loudly, flapping his ears.
"Mar! I don't want to eat dirt!" And he picked up his bone and shifted further around, out of the danger zone. There he flopped back onto his belly and began to chew, his tail wagging.
Then he realised what she'd said. "Atreyu used to give you treasure? How comes? Why didn't I get no treasure? Its cos your a girl, ain't it?" He frowned somewhat jealously.

Marzi frowned, glancing back to see a rather dusty Marakl spitting dirt. "Hehe...uh, sorry." She smiled. She couldn't help if she was impatient. Patience was never something Marzi was good at. "Little dirt won't hurt you." As if to prove it, she snorted, shaking off some dirt from her face.
With a low sigh, Marzi stopped and twitched her narrow tail. "He did." She said with an exasperated sigh. "And, probably. But that's because he's a doof. I ain't some kind of girl you buy with treasure!" Not withstanding the fact that she still wanted it. She was glad she had Marakl though- for the moment, blowing off Atreyu was getting easier and easier when she was 'looking out' for the little guy.
"That's the problem with guys. They give you stuff, then they expect stuff back. Girls too. Don't ever give girls your stuff unless you don't want it back." She instructed, pointing her paw at him. "Bleh. Well, don't count if we take it, right?"
"There's nothing bad or anything with Atreyu, even if he is a doof. We just don't want him to be thinking we owe him anything or something."

"I'll stick to bones, thanks." He replied. And, as Marzi explained he settled himself to chewing, working his teeth into the split that was stretching along one side. Another few moments of concentrated biting and the bone cracked with a tremendously wonderful sound.
His tail beat happily against the ground. "I don't get bought with treasure either." Marakl snorted. "You can't eat treasure...well, maybe you could, but it wouldn't taste nice." He began chewing desperately at the marrow inside the bone, his eyes wild with hunger. It was as if he hadn't eaten for many, many days. It was as if the bone was the most wonderful food in the world.
He licked his chops greedily. "Okay. Don't give girls nothing." He replied. "Girls have icky germs anyways, Mar. Well, except you. But you ain't like them others." He beamed stupidly.
"If anything, he owes us for putting up with him and his...doofus-ness." He nodded sharply. "We're all in the pack, right? What's his is ours! That's the rule, ain't it?"

Marzi grinned. "That's right! Now if only he'd figure that out." She was glad Marakl and her were usually on the same page, despite the age difference. Having him backing her eccentric whims was enough confidence she needed to run amuck over Atreyu. "Aint our fault he doesn't want none of our stuff."
Honestly- she was too afraid to really come to terms with whatever it was between them. Maybe subconsciously she was testing just how close he really was. She hoped she wasn't that cruel. But then again...
"Ahah!" Marzi yipped. This time, she returned from the small hole clutching the skull from the same antelope. But rather then dirt- the inside was filled with strange shiny things. A few coins, a letter opener, a tin can- and a bunch of string. It wasn't much, but as far as Marzi was concerned, it was beautiful.
"Eeee, look!" She placed the skull down, and started to shake out the contents. "All the secret things. We won't take everything though. Just most of it." Taking a liking to the string, she started to wind it out from the mix of objects. The string finally popped lose- taking with it a small, human shaped doll made of reeds.
Curiously, she observed it, and then threw it to Marakl. "Ooh, he likes such strange things."

The hyena curled a lip. Why didn't the lion get it? Weren't lions pride animals? Animals that lived better as a unit? All of them were social animals, relying on others to make it through life. Didn't he have the rules written into his genes at birth? He was young but he understood that he had to look out for Mar as much as she looked out for him.
They were a team, after all.
And yeah, Atreyu was part of the team, but with the lion it was different. It didn't come easy. Maybe if he'd known a little more of what had been going on between his pack mates he might have been less harsh towards the lion. But he didn't and he was on Mar's side one hundred percent.
At Marzi's exclamation the hyena shot back up onto his paws, curiosity peaked. "More bones?" He chirped, glancing down at the split bone that was now lying at his feet. "I could go for another." But apparently it was something far more interesting than that.
He took a step forwards, whining with curiosity. What had she found? He blinked as she began tugging on a long piece of...something? He tilted his head, lifting both ears with anticipation.
Then she was throwing it at him and he lifted himself up on his hind legs to catch it in his teeth. He dropped it on the ground a moment later and rolled it under one paw. "It doesn't taste like food..." He murmered. "What is it Mar? It isn't even shiny like treasure." He batted it with a paw and chased it across the dirt with a yip. "Are we gonna keep this, yeah?" He didn't know why, but he liked it.
