Myself and Yu, are embarking upon a business course sometime in november. So we'll get all the resources from there. Any information could probably be found at
www.glos.ac.uk/bugcompetition
I like the idea of page views, that is a good technique to have. I haven't come across that one just yet.
Seems like everyone pretty much would be okay with an adverts or three scattered about.
We will also advertise eventually our site out. We will have more population than just coders, as already we have designers and thinkers.

All good. The ads seem ok then.
The population thing could be good actually. A large population of coders would give us a massive resevoir of untapped potential.

I'm fine with ads. As long as they're in appropriate places. As long as they're not flash.
I am totally out if this is going to be an annoying site you can't see because it's covered with flash ads.
I think that to work for free is a little unreasonable. If you make it so that it's like real estate, if the site takes off, everyone involved will get their slice, if it flops, no hard feelings. In that respect, I think everyone involved should OWN a part of the site. I do not like the idea of a kingpin like lanzer hogging everything.
Advertising should be very low key, or it will turn off thousands of potential donaters. Pepsi wants to advertise on the site, release a Pepsi can item, post the Pepsi logo on a billboard in a game. Hell, even an unused blank space would be alright as long as it's not a flash ad.
The site should be for users, or no one will want to log on.

Definately. And make it clear that they're just a donation item, like MCs used to be.

Dizzytrash Chiakumu Hyana Myself and Yu, are embarking upon a business course sometime in november. So we'll get all the resources from there. Any information could probably be found at www.glos.ac.uk/bugcompetition surprised I live there. Seriously? You might want to meet up with Yu sometime. I wasn't seriously too bothered with the cash shop as such, however, it's something that should be taken into consideration from the outset. Perhaps a chain of command for Cash based items. Taking it from gaia...from top level to bottom level. Monthly Available Items / Extra's (perhaps ornaments or background for your avatar?) / Aquarium Attributes (Though nothing like what gaia has implemented with the your money lasts for only two weeks before it dies) Monthly items should always be worth more, than the other items, as an investment procedure. This should make it easier for even new players to get a good return on their investments. Maybe one or two Monthly items would evolve? Not like gaia making a whole new system, and so we'd only have one once every so often. The extra's wouldn't be worth as much as Donation items, but they'd be useful to get. For instance house ornaments, or background images? Heck even game tools. I miss the net and digging thing gaia used ot have for towns. Aqurium Attributes, would be on the same level as other game items, and the least important. Perhaps have a limit on how much someone can buy items, in relation to the amount of posts they have. (Not a limit on donations)

I do like the idea of how active you are earning you extra cash. How about a system where when you log in for an hour you get 10 "cash" not gold which you earn around the site for various things but a seperate resource. When you post you earn a small amount of cash and for every hour your logged in you earn cash but only for like 4 hours so we're not seen to be encouraging people to spend ALL their time on the computer. If we have a time log off thing then people will have to be active to earn the cash. Should mean the users that matter and come on often can be rewarded.... obviously other actions would win cash but we can list them and brain storm later on.

i don't think we should bring cash into it that much. Perhaps for those people that are active and their posts are substantial, then thy can be rewarded. Perhaps having a mod going around and making sure that particular posts aren't counted. (botters).
I'm also going to ban excessive spam.

Reward cash for posts that are longer than a certain amount. Make it so actual posters are rewarded as you say but botters are easily distinguished. Also making the cash untradeable between players will cinch the botters because they'll only be able to do it on one account and it won't be very useful. As for the cash itself being able to trade it for items that are exclusive (like say special clothes rather than actual items that are exclusive) would be nice. Like a good set of shirt and pants or a suit. That way its not vital but it brings nice rewards.

D : but spam makes the world go round, you can't ban spam. Encouraging posting is a good thing, people get bored for posting "bump" and actually start talking to people after a while. I know I did, in the end I got more out of actually talking to people and earning gold on the market place by trading.
What you want to do is keep spam in it's designated area. Some gaia rip offs do this, but take earning gold, or whatever out of the spam areas. This encourages spammers to spam up other forums.
I think, if you made it so you earned slightly more money in the spam forums, it would keep all the spammers there, and anyone who wants to talk about anything else can earn slightly less, but be free of spammers spamming for gold.
Some people really do just want to hang out in a bucket of spam, so let them. It's not Nazi Germany, where only ideal people may live and breed in our community. You have your trash and your outstanding people, take the good with the bad, not just exclude everyone you don't like. Remember when gaia banned *****? Discouraging certain groups of people will just lead to an uproar.
I don't know about you guys, but I imagine the perfect world being where everyone is free to be who they are, and not molded to some ideal. I'd say I have the same feeling towards the perfect website.
Back to the money though. I can't tell you how much I hate the cash shop. I really can't. It's just one of those things that makes my blood boil. When I joined gaia, their main selling point to everyone was "we're ad free, and it's all free!" this is going back years though. I have no objection to MCs, I think it's an awesome thing to give money to a site you like and have an item for supporting them. But a cash shop is seriously a d**k slap in the face, and I mean p***s across the face.
I do not want the home page of this new site to be like gaia's is now. Hit your home button and take a look... it looks like a big ugly spammy mess of ads.
Donations are awesome, but I never want to see a cash shop. I mean never... It breaks the spirit of giving to a site, and makes you no better than a greedy guts like gaia.

No the ideals are simple. You get rewarded with Cash for making a decent post and gold for spamming. They still get what they want but the cash is like for actual dedicated users who are more likely to care about having a decent set of clothes rather than MCs. If we just allowed spammers to get cash it would rather devalue the whole thing.

Why does there have to be two money systems though? Can't you reward dedicated users with like, rare items instead of a completely different money system? It's just going to encourage spammers to spam in more elaborate ways. There's no reason why they won't just start copy pasting old threads to get cash.
:/ spammers spam to get something, they'll spam to get better things faster if they have to.
I think you're underestimating people who spam.
