He was already halfway there; because did Nettle detect a note of sarcasm to the question? Was Ashes trying to be sly, clever? Was his sober expression a mask over a fit of the giggles, internalized so that Nettle wouldn't hear them and call him on it...?

He got a long, lingering look before Nettle shivered and shook himself, sending droplets of water flying in every which direction. He was still soggy, fur matted down against a surprisingly skinny frame. It made him look awkward, frail, and not all that wise or promising. "Nettle."

And he suspected the other buck was named something flighty and weird, but he kept that thought to himself.

'Nettle'

Not exactly extravagant or shamanic, but definitely fitting for such a grumpy creature. Ashes kept that opinion to himself, o'course, last thing he wanted was to be kicked at by an angry elder. The lack of interest from Nettle clearly showed, though Ashes was persistent! Despite his love of solitude, he was rather lonely...

"Well, I'm called From Bloody Ashes..."

"No, that's too long." Rough and immediate -- Nettle was himself again, altogether on top of his game, even if the weight of the water left him limping just a little. He shook himself again, trying to get rid of the rest of the water. Now he puffed up a little, back toward normal, just a little thinned-down with gold eyes locked on Ashes.

"Choose something shorter. I'm not saying that every time I have to use your name..." And the weird part was he seemed like he meant it. Didn't matter that it really was Ashes's name. He wanted something shorter.

The blue buck's head tipped to one side, water sliding delicately down his chin. What a funny thing to say - and very rude, too, but he would never say such a thing to an older Kimeti. So, humoring the buck and following suit in his own half-trot limp, Ashes settled beside the elder once again.

"I don't have any other names," mused the Buck, glancing down at his splotched chest the best he could. "You could call me anything you like." His expression brightened drastically, at least Nettle was interested in calling him something other than 'you'.

"Well, take your pick then --" Nettle rolled his eyes, twitched his tail to send more droplets of mud-stained water flying, attention turned for just a moment after the fluttering of that white butterfly before it sailed away again, well out of their reach.

"From, Blood, Ee, Ash, or Es." Was he joking? It didn't look like he was joking...

The buck went silent, unsure of the nature of such a selection. Was he joking? If he gave him a real answer, he might look bloody foolish. Then again, nothing about Nettle seemed jovial or in good nature. So, in an act quite serious, the buck chose a suitable name.

"You can call me Ash, then." The soft, scale-less patches beneath his eyes flooded, half-expecting the other to berate him for his obliviousness.

No teasing at first, just a curt sound, a bob of Nettle's head -- "Fine. Ash, then."

Except then his eyes actually settled on the Kimeti, and his expression went...peculiar. Pinched and confused, most certainly shocked, just watching Ashes's eyes fill with tears and his expression miserable. "Good -- what -- are you crying?"

Exasperation and sarcasm didn't really make for the best reassurance, but Nettle...was Nettle. Couldn't help it.

The younger of the two huffed, eyes glinting ever so slightly in the dim marsh light. Blushing as bright as a gooseberry, Ashes began a nervous in-place trot, ears flat and shaking in an irritated manner. "I'm just...a bit frustrated, that's all." He managed, still interested in swaying the buck, but visibly shaken by the others nature. You're as prickly as your name, you know the other complained inwardly. This entire meeting had left him feeling not only foolish, but confused at his own reaction. Surely he wasn't unstable? "I suppose I should have left you to your...falling." It wasn't meant to be a jab, but one could easily misconstrue the hopeless buck's words.

Well, he was still crying, by the marsh. How could he even try to insult someone else? Nettle didn't seem upset, offended, or even angry -- just thoroughly horrified, staring at Ash with his eyes too wide and mouth hanging open just a hair.

They were not making bucks as well as they once had, apparently.

"Perhaps you need to take a very long...run..." Or something. Something to wake the young buck up and get him back in his skin. Drive away some of the crazy. Nettle shook his head, twitchily.

"A...run?" The buck nearly toppled over, stopping in place, the awkward jolt reverberating through his bad leg like a shock wave. "I can't run, not with that rock leg of mine." This was only depressing the creature, attention now drawn to the stiff, seemingly calcified limb, which was now aching at the mere mention of it's disability. The bucks ears went flat, tail still shivering in tune with his nerves. He was quite a miserable creature, save for temporary bouts of happiness at the sight of a butterfly or, in this case, an unusual elder with a cold air about him.

"Fine then, limp, walk, swim, whatever you want." Nettle looked -- well, halfway panicked, his expression knitted and his shoulders tense as he fidgeted where he stood. Several steps toward him and then even more back, away, where it was perhaps a bit safer.

"Deep breaths, perhaps?" One more step, prancing, sideways. "Duck your face under or something.
