Styx allowed his ears to react the sound of his name but he suppressed the instinct to turn at the mention of his name, it instincts seemed fully flared now, no time to change his mind, no time to react to anything other than the burning desire to reach the fragile fox before him. His heart was pounding within his chest. He could hear it echo within his ears, the quickening ‘thump, thump’ was now near deafening as he ran towards the log once more. As he hit it once again he felt it start to buckle under his weight, estimating that it would take one more strong hit he set up to charge once more.

His breath was feeling more laboured now as the thickening smog started to cling to his insides. His mind was feeling hazy once more, yet this time it was different to how the shadows controlled him, this was near unbearable, smog he could not shift with his will power alone. As his side slammed in with the log once more it snapped beneath him, splinters’ piecing his flesh as his watery protection was wearing thin. The heat was affecting him more now. Yet his eyes darted towards the creature that had drawn him here to begin with. How typical that on the clearest day of his new existence this had come to pass. Sighing his ears picked up the low mumble of Kaiya’s words over the blazing flames that slowly consumed the once mighty forest. He could not understand why she seemed to care so much, not just about the creature he was attempting but perhaps even for him. It was a foreign concept to him to consider one of their breed showing concern for others out of their own. Perhaps his experiences had been limited after all... Anger suddenly peeled over his face. What was he doing, he was wasting the precious moments he had to save himself and the pathetic creature before him. Helpless, alone, that was his way.

Darting towards the small fox he gathered him up between his jaw and turned abruptly to run towards Kaiya once more, he would at least use this healing ability of hers before he left once more. The creature in his jaw was heavy, yet motionless, swinging towards his throat with each movement. Each movement was more laboured than he could remembered, a conscious effort being forced into his mind as he tried to examine the dancing, mesmerising flames to find safe passage out of the forest.

Soon he was beside Kaiya once more, he noted through his peripheral view that she was also struggling, and in that instance a strange image flashed into his mind. They were running, but not away from danger but towards a beautiful lake, there was a smile peeled across his face, and a happy note within his heart. He could not explain it, why would he even contemplate such things. A snarl appeared at the edge of his lips as he forced his concentrating to the bundle in his jaw.

As he moved he felt small creatures tugging at the hairs around his hooves, though he dared not spare a thought to them as he felt them slam into his muscles with each movement.

He mumbled, probably illedigbally through the side of his mouth, being careful not to loosen his grip even for a moment, "whsy yous daig tis?" He was attempting to understand the strange mare. Why was she doing this?

((Ok... feel free to take us anywhere you want XD Sorry its not very good. No idea why he started seeing things.... the dice picked =D blaim the dice.))

The mare felt suffocated and edgy. Though accustomed to pain thanks to many a battle against those she tried to help, this so of pain was all consuming. Though she wasn't on fire she certainly felt it. The intense heat from the flames was only getting worse and she knew they would both be in great trouble if they didn't move soon. Her skin felt tight and old scars seemed to pull. . .

Honestly, Kaiya felt as if she was going to burst in to flames too. But she refused to leave her friend. She had to make sure he too could make it out alive and would assist him too if need be. The orange glow of flames was eating through the forest faster than Kaiya liked to see. . . . . But thankfully the wind was mostly still.

Fidgiting a bit, the mare looked ridiculous. If any could find humor in it but she was practically swarmed with creatures too small to make it out alive. They clung to her desperately and the mare wondered if she'd even be able to fly. Probably not. . . . But she wouldn't take to flight even if she could. There was too much smoke.

As Styx turned away, his chosen victim in hand, Kaiya wasted no time. Her body burned and she could hear the protests of the animals she carried and could only hope they knew they would be safe soon. It broke her heart knowing there were many, far too many, she had been unable to rescue. If, once they landed, she could go back to retrieve more she would but something in her heart told her that she would be unable. . . . The heat was getting worse, agonizing really, and fleeing was the only venue. Besides, how many would she have to heal?

The fox, for one. . . and any on her that were burned.

So the pair ran, fleeing from the flames that licked at their heals. The mare felt light headed, and borderline confused, but other creatures showed her the way. The further out of the fire they ran, the temperature change was felt immediately. From the excruciating heat to the sudden cool breath of evening . . . . It was almost overwhelming!

Still, as soon as safety (or a temporary safety) was reached, Kaiya stumbled forward. The animals upon her were quick to scatter, those tht weren't left rasping for fresh air. Giving herself a small shake, and trying to clear her own lungs of the burning smoke, the mare ignored her own burns from falling ash and embers and turned to those around her.

Who needed the most help? An eye at the raging flames within the woods told her she would be unable to return; she couldn't handle another beating, and the smoke had clearly gotten to her head. Semi dazed and a bit confused herself, she knew walking back would be a death sentence. . . . Besides which, she needed to ease the pain of those around her immediately.

Like the fox. Trotting her way over to Styx, the mare spoke, "Please," she rasped, surprised at the sound of her own words. "Let me see him. . . I may be able to help." She was no unicorn, but she wasn't without some small gifts to aid others. Perhaps she could ease some of this fox's suffering.

The fox felt heavier and heavier with each movement. It was hard to think as the blinding smoke thickened and clung to his every inch, the snarl that had curled at the corner of his lips was still there and although his mind was rushing to find an escape he was annoyed at being ignored by this Angeni, perhaps his moment of clarity had also dulled his senses, how foolish of him to attempt to understand such strange and despicable creatures. Yet this thought faded quickly as the desperate nature of the situation clung to him once more. His hooves hit the ground hard as they finally made it to a clearing of relative safety.

His snarl softened as he lowered his head to the ground, it was replaced immediately by a sorrow he could not explain, emptiness. The perfect little bundle was released onto the ground softly before Styx drew his head high to examine him, suddenly he lowered it once more to nudge the delicate creature with his nose. It did not move. Heart racing he tried again, and again, and again, and again. Still nothing.

Nothing but emptiness.

Nothing but darkness.

His eyes start to well with moisture as he placed an ear near the fox’s’ mouth, he could hear no intake of breath, feel no slow passage of gas exchange that he would expect to be present. Panic started to creep in, had the very reason he had been drawn towards the fire really escaped this world. If so he was a failure.... something stung at the back of his mind with this notion as a phrase tugged at him harshly ’nothing changes’, he had always been a failure, after all that was the truth behind his curse.

As his thoughts screamed within his mind he completely ignored the sounds around him, even as a rasping mumble of the mare travelled towards him his ears flickered at their intake but did not recognise what was said. Shock and fear gripped him tightly to the spot, he was just as fragile as the "pathetic" creature before him, just as "worthless" as its limp body was now, always one step behind in every situation. A true "failure", one that did not deserve to stay here. He spat angrily at the floor, the snarl returning to his lips revealing his sharpened teeth.

Turning his back on the creature he looked back towards the forest, an unspoken sorrow spread across his face as the angry flickering flames of orange and red blazed and reflected in his once again empty eyes. He could not remember the feeling that had drawn him here, nor did he care for it. Life was a heartless machine that showed no justice to those who truly deserved it. Instead it presented a cruel game, a game placed with treachery, deceit and eventually death.

Eyes still stinging from the smoke he blinked more than he was use to, pushing the droplets of moisture out of his eyes to form gentle rounded tears that ran slowly at first down his face. All he could do now was watch. Too exhausted to do more, to ashamed at his failure that he knew he would be of very little use either way. Confusion settled. Loneliness lingered. Desperation taunted. In an instant of pain his attention had been shifted completely, perhaps today was a good day to die?

Yet although he was blocked to his surrounds now some small insignificant part of Styx’s wild and erratic brain passed a thought for Kaiya, his question still burnt him harsher than any living flame. Why was she doing all of this? His skin stung.

"No . . ." Kaiya half chocked, realization dawning on her that the fox's condition was fatal. In fact, as Styx lowered the creature to the ground, Kaiya found herself in a sate of half-panic. The serene evening had passed in to something more like a night mare, and the mare felt her heart break with every passing moment. Not only had the woods been destroyed, but the loss of life was apparent.

She had come here to save, to heal, to protect and thus far she had done little good. Styx had tried so hard to save him, to rescue him from the burning flames and yet . . . it was to no avail. "LIVE!" Dropping to her knees, wrapping her wings around the fox and cuddling its body close, Kaiya tried so hard to pour her spirit in to the animal . . . .

But her healing would do no good to a body that wasn't alive. And no amount of wishing, praying, and hoping would change such a sentiment. The mare buried her nose against the creature, wanting nothing more than her touch to change the current events. Why would the spirits be so cruel? Once again, the mare had to wonder why death had to have a place on the world. . . why things always had to come to an end.

"I'm sorry," she whispered. . . the first of what would be many apologies.

Frustrated, Kaiya felt her own tears fall down upon that of the fox. . . but now was not a time for such woe. Even though there was nothing she could do for the fox, there were still others that needed her head. Ears flattening, she half hid her face in her long, disheveled hair and forced herself to her feet. There were hearts breaking around her, and she needed to tend to them. . . .

Casting an eye on Styx, she wanted badly to comfort him in his grief too. But . . . . there were others she had to heal first. With luck she could tend to him last. . . . "Here," the mare murmured, looking to an old raccoon that had suffered some severe ember wounds. Pressing her muzzle gently against him, she treated him as best she could. . . .

It was this way for awhile. The mare moved from creature to creature, doing her best to heal those she could. There were many she wept over, many she found had escaped too late, but the mare did her best. Her own wounds ignored, her own grief misplaced, Kaiya used her healing to the best of her ability. By the end of it, she felt exhausted, drained emotionally despite the good she DID do. Those that didn't make it and those that had been separated from their families within the flames weight heavily upon the mare. . . .

Why couldn't she have done more? Why couldn't she have known about the fire sooner, earlier?

Wings dragging, the dual eyed, tear stained mare only then able to refocus. There was still one yet who needed help, one she hoped lingered. "Styx," she called out, sweeping the surrounding area with her gaze. She hoped he hadn't left her, hoped she could offer him some sort of comfort. . . or at the least heal the burns that she knew had had to have sustained.

Hopefully he wouldn't begrudge her her neglect. . . But she had to stop others from suffering. She just plum couldn't have waited.

The world suddenly turned to a disorganised blur. He couldn’t concentrate at all and before he knew it his body was moving backwards inch by inch. Eyes screwed up, breathe shallow and the shadows attempting to consume him once more with their tempting empty comfort, so tempting that he did not fight the sensation as it washed over him like waterfall.

A snarl lit up his face into a distorted mess, his greasy hair flopped lifelessly in front of his eyes yet his mind could see perfectly through the pain and the misery around, detached and separate, the very things he usually hated. All he was able to think about was how life was unbearable if there was no way of escaping the destiny of death. He would die. The strange Angeni he had only moments earlier walked with would also be fated to experience the same fate. A fate that no living creature was able to escape; no matter how hard they tried to hide in the darkness.

A screechy scream erupted from his harsh lips as he threw himself to the floor, rolling he tried desperately to put out the fire hidden within the darkness of his soul, he did not want to be consumed by the very essence of himself, although he could see no visible path to escape. Slowly the screaming subsided and he found himself laying on his back eyes unblinkingly watching the torrents of clouds as they consumed the sky. Mumbled words left his lips again and again, "Death is the end. Why fight.
Death is the end. Why fight. Death is the end. Why fight. Death is the end. Why fight. Death is the end. Why fight. Death is the end. Why fight. Death is the end. Why fight. Death is the end. Why fight. Death is the end. Why fight. Death is the end. Why fight."

Lost in the darkness he could not hear or focus on Kaiya as she tried to comfort him, alone once more in his mind he simply stayed still looking at the sky. Perhaps it was true that the world would end one day in a great ball of fire, he still remembered hearing that prophecy although he had always believed it to be the words of a mad man. Was he himself not mad? Styx went to roll back onto his legs but found himself suddenly drained of energy and only managing to move onto his side. Eyes glassy and empty still as he starred at the canvas of the world. The warm breeze that came from the direction of the fire stung his flesh leaving a layer of grey ash in its wake.

It was here that Styx lay still, eyes slowly focusing once more on the world through darkened eyes. The lifeless body of the fox before him. The steady heartbeat of another beside him. Yet he felt empty.

((Ok so Styx snapped a little. It was either that or run away, pretend nothing had happened or actually accept help =D it was quite fun to write though so I am glad the dice picked it. *pets her dragon dice*))

((This action make get her in trouble but I apologize. ^^; ))

Kaiya watched with deep concern as the stallion seemed to snap. Her ears folded for a moment as he shrieked, and the mare found tears once again blurring her vision. She knew something was broken with the kelpie before her but she also knew not what nor how to cure him; he was in as dire need of salvation and love but once again, the angeni of redemption was far from reaching her goal.

Styx was hurting, thrashing about and writhing in a pain she couldn't see; his soul was shattering before her eyes and there was no way she could stop the pain. Oh, but if only she could. . . . The hot tears rolled down her face as her own exhaustion took over. Old wounds burned and new pains throbbed but her heart also ached; so much death and hurt surrounded her and though the two of them had done good there was also much they couldn't have done.

The gods had called many home and the fire still burned. . . .

Sometimes, during these moments of suffering, even Kaiya couldn't understand their will.

Shuffling closer to the stallion, the mare put herself between the heat of the fire and Styx. Wings outspread, she dropped to ground beside him, shielding him with her wings from the sprinkling ash and embers. No words could come to her, there was little she could say to the stallion as he fought his own battles. What hope coulds he give him as he drown within the dark? What words of comfort could she offer as he struggled with demons unbeknownst to herself. . . .

So instead, she sang. Her voice was dry, a bit strained but her words were genuine and meant for the soul beside her.

"Please come back to me my child
Things weren’t meant to be
without tears we cry
even though we new
it did strike
but this ain’t no dream
no this is life.

And all the colors fade leaving nothing more
than a black and white shade on an empty
shore
a part is gone
and sure we do long
but black and white is so much more than nothing at all.

Please come back to me my child
yes we do control a lot
way too much
overwhelmed by disbelief
left in shock
still our disbelief is the remaining lock

And all the colors fade leaving nothing more
than a black and white shade on an empty
shore
a part is gone
and sure we do long
but black and white is so much more than nothing at all."

Drifting in an out of the shadows Styx sat still now, he considered his own existence, he was alone, with no deeds to hold against his names of particular significance, his will was only sometimes his own. Yet as he lay dwelling upon the shadows and sadness that lingered in his heart he felt it suddenly race, a bright elegant light shone through his mind for a moment as he felt the warmth strike his side. Someone was with him; perhaps he was not entirely alone. Although he could not focus on the world around him, his instincts reached out, his head moved towards the source of warmth and light and as he found contact he closed his dark eyes. The warmth flooded over him like running water. Taking a long deep breath he felt long hairs tickle his nose before the smell of burning and smoke hit him. It was a reminded that he wanted to disappear so much so that before he could stop himself he found himself burying his nose closer into the warm creature.

The light that had entered his mind was starting to clear more of the shadows; it was comforting to ponder the possibility of light sources. It was in that thought that he remembered the name of his previous companion, "Kaiya." He could not understand the strange mix of emotions that flooded over him at the realisation of who the warm creature actually was, an Angeni, one of the almighty breed that saw themselves as higher essences to the rest of the pitiful world, yet here she was, between him and the raging flames and torrents of smoke. "Why?" It was the only question that seemed to remain, he could ignore her breed, ignore the fact that she was a mare, ignore the fact that they had not managed to do enough to save the creatures of the forest but he could not think of anything else other than that question now. Why would someone come to comfort him, he had not exactly claim to have been the most hospitable of creatures.

A shame that Styx did not recognise covered over him, he felt guilty for how he had acted, yet he was not able to fully disregard his feelings completely towards the entire Angeni breed, even if he could accept a single individual. He continued to sit in silence, his thoughts whirling with increased ferocity due to the clarity of mind.

It was in that moment that a melody unknown to him struck his ears, a song; although there was a sad undertone in the tune he slowly began to feel better. Possibly even hopeful. Before he could control it he found himself attempting to hum the tune while she sung; yet his voice was dry and course, which gave no compliment to her delicate tune. It was simply another reminder that he was in a different category to the Angeni breed, to her.

Slowly he started to move away from her, and then off the ground. The wind changed direction. Rather than aiding the fire it was now fighting it, although it gave no comfort to his shattered heart. The tear paths dried. His greasy hair blew in the breeze as Styx slowly turned his body to face the troubled Kaiya, a half formed attempt at a smile peeled upon his lips in an effort to bring a delicate smile upon her own, he had heard once that a smile was as contagious as a disease yet he had never seen such things come true before. Gulping he allowed his eyes to venture past her to the raging flames beyond, they would burn for hours maybe even days and he knew all too well that there was nothing he or she could do to aid the forests suffering, leaving would be best. Nervous he spoke, "lets leave." He still felt the pain deep within him, the shadows lurking in the back of his mind, and the image of the dead fox as strongly as he had mere moments before yet he was allowing himself to indulge in her presence. Perhaps leaving this place would also allow him to forget. Forgetting was sometimes a good thing.

Kaiya was surprised but inwardly pleased when the stallion turned closer to her comfort. She reached out to gently embrace the stallion within her dual sets of wings, allowing the great feathers to wrap tenderly around his side. It was still the softest of touches, not wanting to scare away or upset the fragile moment between angel and damned. . . . She needed the comfort just as much as she believed he might, and could only hope the slight touch would provide such a thing.

Honestly, it had been a long and rough evening. . . . Kaiya could only pray the spirits would heal their hearts soon.

Gold and silver eyes turned down at the greasy haired stallion. Her ears pricked forward as she heard his voice, heard his question and plea. "Why?" For a long moment the mare said nothing, though she knew the answer clear as day. With luck the stallion wouldn't respond to her words poorly, nor did she hope he'd feel driven away by such an admittance. Why was she here, protecting him from the raging flames and heavy heat? Why was she here offering her voice as gentle assurance. . .? Why. . . .?

"Because I care. Because I don't want you to hurt anymore." And wasn't it the truth. Though they'd only known each other a small amount of time, the angeni mare wanted nothing more. She truly did care for the stallion, though stranger he might be, but it wasn't within her nature not to. She loved all she met and thought the world of every heart that crossed her path, no matter how 'dark' or 'broken' or 'damned' they might be. Styx was no exception.

As for the pain he felt. . . physically because of the fire, yes, she wished to heal him; but she also understood there were wounds she couldn't see that she wanted nothing more to heal. There were shadows and darkness within the stallion but he was still a mystery. . . And Kaiya wanted nothing more than to offer him whatever help she could.

Ah, but such a quiet moment wouldn't last forever, and thankfully so. With the movement of Styx, Kaiya gently removed her wing and followed suit, pulling herself weakly to her legs. Death surrounded them. . . .but new life would follow. There was hope here yet, regardless of the damage and lives lost. . . .

There was always hope.

Capturing the small smile offered to her, Kaiya returned the favor. Her expression softened and she grinned softly, nodding agreement. "Anywhere but here. . . " she murmured her request, still sticking close to the kelpie, glad she wasn't alone. For even a few moments longer, long enough to pretend the memory of the dead wouldn't haunt her, the mare allowed herself to follow her new companion.

Water would be a good choice. . . perhaps a local pond or lake. . . . but maybe later. She'd rather let her lips go dry and parched than witness the families of nearby creatures also seeking out such a source. She'd find water else where later. For now, she'd accompany Styx elsewhere and take comfort in his wake.

Styx was walking and walking with no particular destination in mind just a goal, to get himself and Kaiya away from this dreadful place. Away from the pain and suffering, away from the smell of burning trees and flesh. He knew that she was a soft creature, all Angeni were, and even if he hated their kind and wished he could punish them this was not the way. For this was tormenting Styx as well. Images flashed like a nightmare before his eyes as he walked, only slowing when he tried to concentrate on something else. The grass or her heart beat. Anything to bring a distraction.

He swayed his tail from side to side, allowing it to softly touch her left every now and then. He didn't know how to comfort anyone, she had placed a wing over him to try and shield him so perhaps touch was the key to such a result? It was worth a try at least. The pain in his heart seemed to act heavy upon him, and for a brief moment he felt freed from his usual torment.

He knew from her words that she was hurting, she seemed to care about everyone, including himself, and although that was a strange concept he had not yet managed to 'ditch' her, perhaps that was for the best? How strange that he would even contemplate such a thing. Today seemed to be an turning into an odd day indeed.

"I..." he started to speak, his mouth moving up and down in a fish like motion as he attempted to complete what he was saying, but no more words seemed to venture forward. Giving up he returned to silence. He had wanted to tell her that he was sorry.

They were now nearing the fast egde of the forest, and this part thankfully seemed unaffected so far by the raging flames and torrents of smoke, yet the smell still lingered signalling the need to venture onwards. Beyond the forest was the plains and running through their were thin rivers that where probably more like streams, they span the whole expanse like viens through the body. Perhaps they would find some relief in that direction?

The wind started blowing in the opposite direction to their movements now, sending the smells away from them and forcing his greasy hair to blow and bend in its wake. Yet with the wind came another smell, one of berries, one that turned Styx into a hunger and forced him to start racing out of control towards it. His hooves hit the ground hard as he tried to manover around the veins of clear liquid, consummed by the bush ahead.

It was getting closer.

He licked his lips.

Eyes focusing only on it.

A baulder appeared in his path, yet his eyes did not see it. Still racing his front legs hit it with such force that he was sent tumbelling forward. Flying through the air, with his tongue sticking out. And for a moment he looked like he was flying. Until he hit the ground and started rolling down the slight incline. He imaged he looked funny as he smashed into the bush of berries, only to have their juices explode all over his face. A little dazed he blinked looking up.

Why did these things always happen to him?
