Yeah, I intend on smuggling my darling to school on days when I can give my baby full attention and readily able to fend off grubby paws from the darling.
Today I did the ritual "FRIDAY'S DOLLIE DAY!!" (since that's when I'm going to order Yuki, Yuu for short sometimes) and my order-er couldn't stop laughing at my ecstatic-ness.
Some people say that dolls are better than friends. In one DoA thread who's feeling depressed, they said the doll helped them through it. I'm not sure if feeling like that towards a doll would be a positive thing or not... Can anyone relate?

Why do we assign inanimate objects personalities? Perhaps we do it for different reasons. I know I do it because I lack certian things in my life. Sadly, I lack a real friend life. I have little to no social life out of school. So my dolls kind of make up for that I guess.
Why do we make up a fantasy world or backstory about them? It's all for fun for me anyway. I do it because I enjoy creating things. I also do it because I enjoy character development.
Why do we give them names and treat them like humans? I do it because everything deserves a name as far as I'm concerned. People name pets and heck guys name their cars! Why can't a doll have a name too?
Why is it a common theme for dollfies to be gay for other dolls [and straight only for their owners]? Probably because people live vicariously through something. Perhaps because they themselves want to try it out...I don't know. I know I have one single gay doll. (I myself own three.) He's gay because his character calls for it.
Is this like childhood where our baby blankets and teddy bears had names? Maybe, maybe not. People always want a companion. Perhaps these dolls are just that for some people, compainons.
Is this like making the person we wish we never were? I don't knoe. Maybe again these are what we wish we could be. Not what we wish we never were. I sometimes add tiny aspects to my dolls that I wish I could have. For example it could be as simple as eye color or a wig color.
What does the doll hobby mean to you? For me it means many various things. I get to have interactive art and I also get to make friends through it. I'm not a shy person by any means but I am shy when it comes to calling people on the phone. I'm also really nervous when it comes to certian situations. *shrugs* Perhaps I'm rambling....or perhaps...I'm making sense...

`MaliceMizer But I don't see any point in a personality or a backstory. What for? This doll... it's just a doll. I agree. I do think (from my experience at meetups. Not to be bashing on anyone but this is just what I have experienced over about 5 years) that a lot of the people create personalities and project them upon their dolls because they are lonely and/or have poor social skills. `MaliceMizer I've yet to actually SEE someone converse with their doll. I have. gonk I do think naming dolls is fairly normal though. Especially when you get to have a lot of them, it's easier to tell them apart, and they are more personalized as your items. And oh man oh man, agreeing so hard with XShe_JokerX on the gay thing. And the whole anime/manga/crazy scary yaoi fangirl business. Honestly, it reaaaally drives me nuts anymore, but uh, different strokes for different folks. To me, the doll hobby means nothing. Most of the doll fans I meet terrify me as people, and I try to stay away from them. Anyway, I pose a question to the OP: I see that at first you refer to your future doll as just a doll, but your most recent post has you calling it "my darling". What occurred to make your feelings (I assume) change? Love, a seriously jaded doll owner. heart

I don't mean it as "OH MY GOD MY PRECIOUS MY PRECIOUSSS"
I just mean it as a term of endearment~ Like how my dog is "MY TOBI BABYYY"
I think of it as something I'm going to obsess over when I get it. I will refer to the doll as he, though, because it sounds offensive to me for anything. Blankets are boys, stuffed animals are girls. Deal. For me, dolls are almost exclusively male even if it's GGG-cup Barbie.
And I think I did it so that the "it" doesn't upset anyone here.
I can't really tell you to be sure, I'm not thinking the same thoughts that I was when I typed it. But I think it's playing along with the others - I tend to get swept away, so I should watch what I type...

I'm not sure if feeling like that towards a doll would be a positive thing or not... Can anyone relate? Dolls could never replace my friends. If anything, they'd help to distract me, especially if I'm physically working on them, face-up or modding wise. That's usually what I really think those people mean when they say they help them; they distract them from their feelings. Though if they were around, I would sooner find solace in my friends than my dolls.

I think that depends on the person.
The doll, for me, is only another medium then paper and pen, to create stories.
I have original characters I create stories and a doll would only represent that character to make it easier to explain, describe things about that OC.
Also, it would seem weird to get one and just use it to sit there when it is supposed to represent a character, so it seems normal to pretend it has emotion and feels what the character would feel if he was real.
This answer a lot of your questions xd Well.... I hope xp
For the gay part... only 2 of my OCs are gay.... and 1 only "says it" The other (The one I will reprsent first) crossdress a lot, and does not really care about sex. And obviously they are together xd
That is the character... I wont change it becasue I'll have a doll of them xd
My other characters dont really have a sex life so I dont know xd
I still have plushies and they all have their names, I do not think it is childish or only a thing you do as a child, they are part of my not-so-real-Familly xd
I would never ever try to make a doll about what I want to be ... I dont even know what I want... and it would scare me to death to see one that looks like me =A=
What does it mean to me? Another way to show what I think, my stories and I think dolls are a marvellous piece of art !!! It is like I would never need to draw my characters ever again =w= Just to take a few photos and TADA!!! I can show how my OCs look like biggrin
I would still draw them.... but it would be faster to "explain" with a real photo biggrin

Chibi_Fluffy I mean you click on a switch and "CLICK" a picture!
While drawing can take hours biggrin This. And even if you suck at photography, it is not hard and just a little practice and learning about lighting (which is very simple: Backlit images suck, massively bright direct sunlight sucks, too little light sucks, etc, etc.) makes everything leaps and bounds better. Also, please god just make sure your doll isn't sprawled out awkwardly. Pose it, make sure it looks nice! Just for you all, I will go into a massive post about how to use shutter speed and aperture for those with the fancier cameras that allow you to change those settings when I get back from class. (I'll post it in the photography tips section)

._____.
I have a Sony DSC-W120
My other camera was just like this one, kinda, except it broke. Then I got this new one that no matter how badly I shake and tremble there is like... NO BLURRINESS!! Omigod. I think I can TAKE PICTURES NOW!!
AHAHAHA!!! -runs around snapping candid camera shots of everyone-
Bwah... Now I don't have to ask the professional photogtrapher for a professional photoshoot. ALSO, sidenote, completely unrelated to this off-topic thread...
Has anyone tried reducing the chicken-neck factor that most smaller-sized/non-large dolls seem to have? I've seen one member who cut the neck (not sure how though). I want to ask you guys, and then wait until I get my doll itself before inquiring on DoA how to do it.

Oh lawl I kind of answered that last question in the other thread. I've cut/sanded down a neck once. Messy mission.
I don't find photography any easier than drawing. There's a shitload of elements that really go into making a 'great' picture instead of just a 'nice' one. I'm not a personally 'great' photographer, but thankfully I don't suck, taking blurry a** or grainy pictures of my dolls from up and under their noses.
I've had photoshoots last hours, with over 200 shots and only maybe be satisfied with 10. Ah and don't forget the time it takes to edit, rotate, shrink down and modify shots.
There's a difference between artistic photography and just 'snapping a picture'. I've done both and really, they're pretty different. I have friends that can vouch for me on that.

Hey hey, you don't even have your doll yet, how do you know you're going to take pictures of him from horrid angles? Lawl.
Shakiness = eliminated by a tripod. Grainy look = low ISO :];
