Prologue.
"That's what we get for trying to reuse the same materials for a different process." The doctor spun in his chair to look at the handful of doctors that stood behind his station. "Either way, we need to get this cleaned up before Doc Connor comes back. He'll-" At that moment, Doc Connor himself entered the room. "Hello," he said quietly. All of the doctors present were sweating instantly as Doc made his way to the station. "My my, what have we here?" he asked in his same gentle tone. The doctor at the station fumbled for an answer, unable to piece together a coherent sentence. Connor pointed at the screen, to an almost imperceptible, minute little blip in the extensive, massive flowchart that mapped the progress of the experiment. "Here," he murmured. "Try to fix this here, and I think the result will change." That was all the explanation he offered, his mind clearly elsewhere. Straightening up, he looked around. "Has anyone seen the new doctor? Dr...Kurt something, I think. The new one. Anyone seen him?" One of the doctors stammered something about the physics lab, and Connor nodded his thanks as he left. The room visibly deflated in relief. Making his way to the physics lab, Connor caught a young physicist and sent him off to find Dr. Kurtis Sewell.

((Joe, the Cabal conquers all.
Some day we will all meet in real life. We'll form a biker minivan gang. We'll call it the Cabal. And no one will ever get it, but we'll think it's funny as all heck.
Working on my profile now!))

Commander John St. Cyrill slammed his hands down on the table. "This is absurd!" he shouted, spittle flying. Calming himself visibly, he leaned back from the table. "With all due respect, this could be the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard!" The government agent across the table nodded tiredly. "They told me you'd act like this. Look, Commander, I know you have much more experience, and I know you like to do things your own way. But the government has decided to step in on this one and give you direct orders. Follow them, or you and your unit could find yourselves out of a job. We want international cooperation in this mission, and it's going to start here, at home, in the US of A." Gathering his papers, the agent stood. "The British team is arriving in the morning. I'd recommend you debrief your team before that." With that, he turned and left. St. Cyrill sat for a minute, staring at the wood of the table before him. One of his men came in. "What's wrong, sir?" the young man asked hesitantly. "The government has issued an order," St. Cyrill said in the dead tone of barely contained rage. "We are...we are to cooperate with the British SAS in a search and rescue-type mission. The SAS men will be arriving in the morning, so go and tell the rest of the men to be ready." St. Cyrill didn't reveal the details of their mission; he was still processing it himself. Substance? This was a lot to take in in such a short time. Luckily, St. Cyrill was nothing if not adaptable. He went to his quarters and began to read the file the agent had left him.

Doctor Kurtis Sewell was watching a graph of the behavior of a particle. A scanner with its activation tied to a quantum particle was taking accurate readings even when the quantum particle wasn't in the position to trigger it.

The young physicist sent by Doc Connor found Kurtis at work. "Umm...Dr. Sewell?" he asked tentatively.
