Thinking of his own little baskets Ramses smiled...or smirked...with pride himself. "Your granddaughter? So that makes you a great-grandfather. That's getting up there. I guess being merely a father makes me seem terribly young to one such as yourself. And I don't think leaving the area was really an option, she probably wouldn't have taken the suggestion well..." Ramses repressed a shudder at making Sei angry...it was NOT on the top of his list of things to do...it wasn't on the list at all actually.

"Indeed it does," Helaku agreed blandly, deliberately vague as to exactly what statement he was referring to. "Sounds like a mare I know...a mare of few words, but much action." He cast a sly glance at Ramses as he said this, attempting to sound like he was merely rambling. "She's always been like that, if I remember correctly..."

Ramses nodded his head slightly, "I'm beginning to believe all mares are that way. Though the one I'm thinking of would probably be quite vocal if the need called for it I imagine...most of the time she refuses to speak at all, though I suspect she's just intimidated by me. I can't really blame her for that you know." He spoke as if he was stating a fact, mainly because he believed it himself.

Helaku frowned, certain now that he and Ramses were talking about the same mare--his daughter, and...what relation did this young stallion presume to have with her? Drawing up as much of an air of authority about him as he could muster, he looked Ramses straight in the eye. "I'm afraid you may have misunderstood Sienna...you see...she chooses to be mute, or nearly so, for reasons that I can only guess at. Since the moment she shoved the lid of her basket aside, she has made such a choice." A smile flickered at the corners of his mouth before a stern expression replaced it once more. "I'm sure you're wondering how I know this, so I'll spare you the question. She is my daughter, and as her father I would very much like to know your intentions towards her--although the options are somewhat limited."

Ramses blinked, trying to register what Helaku had just told him. "You're...she..." For once he was the one speechless. He desperately tried to collect his wits about him.
A bit nervously he replied. "Well Sienna is my...well I suppose my mate. She recently gave birth to our children, though they are still in their baskets."

It was very hard not to feel smug at Ramses' astonishment. Helaku managed to firmly shove such thoughts out of his mind, however, and smiled at his...son-in-law? "It's good to hear that you wish to be responsible, and as far as how things came to this point...well, I guess I'm just a nosy old stallion sometimes. After all, what matters is that my daughter is happy. As long as she is, you are one of the family." He gave Ramses a firm look. "Just make sure you keep her happy."

Ramses straightened up proudly, a tad stung. "Of course I'm going to be responsible about this. Besides there is nothing that could make me leave my own flesh and blood. You are lucky that I came to be in your family, because now you'll have the most gorgeous grand foals anyone has ever seen. Sienna will be most delighted to raise my children I am sure."

Helaku laughed heartily, shaking his head. "I'll be the judge of whether I feel lucky or not, alright? Perhaps I feel that it's fortunate that Sienna's happy, but I won't know for sure until I'm sure that she is happy. As far as you're concerned..." Drawing himself up to his full sixteen hands, he paced around Ramses, looking him up and down. "I'd recommend assuming less about how others feel about you and taking a dose or two of humility, hmm?" He winked. "You might find it in your best interest...a couple of my older grandchildren are known to be pranksters."

Ramses watched Helaku circling him. "Humility just means you recognize faults in yourself. Personally I don't see why I should have humility, especially about my looks, when there is no fault. But I will be careful of your grandchildren if I ever meet them. And I'm sure my servant Khufu will help me keep a close eye on them as well."

"Arrogance is a fault in and of itself," Helaku corrected as he came to a halt in front of Ramses. "You are not intrinsically better than I. I am not intrinsically better than you. We each may have things that we are better at, but that does not make each us better than the other as a Soquili. There is a saying in these lands, that pride comes before a fall. However, if you choose not to heed me you may very well have to learn the truth of that for yourself. Firsthand experience is sometimes the most painful way of learning, but it is often the most effective."

"But soquili should have pride in themselves. Beings without pride always need reassured and coddled, are are horrible to be around. And I do not think I'm that being too prideful, I merely tell the truth. I'm not the only one who feels this way, Khufu has constantly informed me of my virtues."

"Pride, yes. Overbearing pride, no. There is a difference," Helaku contested, swishing his tail in a strangely cheerful manner. It had been a very long time since he'd last been able to debate with someone like this, and he was enjoying himself quite a bit. "Flatterers harm more than they help, in such cases. Khufu may be a friend, but he may also be a syncophant who will tell you what you wish to hear to remain in your good graces."

Ramses shook his head. "Khufu knows that I trust him with to tell me the truth. If he does seem to flatter me it is merely because there is a reason. I would not send him away for being critical towards me. I believe that he is being honest with me, and if you asked him yourself, away from me I am positive he would tell you the same things he would say to my face. Maybe he does flatter me, but it is because I deserve it."
