You listen to it enough and eventually you can start to tell. So just use MA if it's too hard to tell.

The music is just so generic, it doesn't offer anything. It all sounds the same. Over the top keyboards to try to sound atmospheric and epic, shitty female singer, and of course.

My Hollow @Lotus: They aren't goth metal. There are elements, if you listen. What are they? (i used the encyclopedia thingy, they are mentioned in footnotes of other bands, but dont have their own entry. they are not really metal, so I am suprised to see them on the sight at all really. Ambient?

Dani Filth and his band of trained chimps is total fail. He doesn't deserve to be associated with gothic metal, or metal at all for that matter.
As for me...I personally have little liking for female-fronted gothic metal bands too. They all sound the same, and most of the new bands in the genre are just trendwhoring efforts. That said, I am much, much more partial to male-fronted goth bands. I understand your eye-rolling at the "woe is me" ethos, War Starter, but it's just a convention of the genre, like misanthropy for black metal. You don't have to like that convention, of course. And quite a few bands are more self-aware of this, and a lot of their songs are sung tongue-in-cheek. I admit it's not the most technically impressive genre, but I need a break from intensity sometimes.
That's my take.
