Mythical Creatures - Greek Centaurs
Written by Arthela

User Image

Centaurs have the torsos of men and the bodies of horses. They are often hostile toward humans. They are well known for being drunks. They are said to have a habit of carrying off helpless young maidens. They were driven from Mount Pelion in Thessaly of northern Greece after violating female guest and trying to abduct the bride at the wedding of the king of Lapiths. They then dispersed all over the world.

They are most commonly said to be the children of Ixion son of Ares, and a cloud. Zeus would use the Centaurs sometimes to punish the gods and humans who had offended him. They are followers of the Dionysus, the god of wine. They were said to symbolize the dark, unruly forces of nature.

Pagan Humor
Written by SwirlingDark

Pagans In Heaven

A Pagan died and, much to her surprise, found herself at the Pearly Gates facing St. Peter. He walked up to her and said, "Hello, and welcome.

She stared at St. Peter in complete confusion. "Wait a minute," she said. "I was supposed to end up in the Summerlands."

He smiled. "Ah, you must be one of our Pagan sisters. Follow me, please."

Peter gestured for her to follow him down a small path which went through the gates and down a bit to the left. They walked for a short while, then he stepped back and gestured her forward. Looking past his hand, she saw the verdant fields and forests of her desired Summerlands. She saw people feasting, dancing, and making merry, exactly as she expected.

While shaking her head in wonder, the Pagan happened to glance over to one side and saw a small group of people a short way away from the edge of the Summerlands. The people in the group were watching the revelers, but not joining them. Instead, they were screaming and weeping piteously. The Pagan looked at St. Peter. "Who are those people? St. Peter replied,

"Them? They're Fundamentalists. They're a bit surprised to see you all there, so they stand there and carry on like that all day."

"Why? Don't they have better things to do?"

Peter leaned conspiratorially toward her. "They don't really have a choice. They're actually in Hell. God doesn't like being told what He thinks."

-----

Eve's Chat With God

"Lord, I have a problem."

"What's the problem Eve ?"

"I know that you created me and provided this beautiful garden and all of these wonderful animals; as well as that hilarious comedic snake, but I'm just not happy"

"And why is that Eve ?"

"Lord, I am lonely and I'm sick of apples."

"Well, Eve in that case I have a solution; I shall create a man for you."

"Man? What is that, Lord?"

"A flawed creature with many bad traits. He will lie, cheat and be vain. All in all, he'll give you a hard time. He will be bigger than you, and faster, and will like to hunt and kill things. He will look silly when he is aroused but, since you have been complaining, I will create him in such a way that he will satisfy your physical needs. He will be witless and revel in childish things like fighting and kicking balls about. He won't be too smart, so he will also need your advice to think properly."

"Sounds great" says Eve, with an ironically raised eyebrow, "but what is the catch, Lord?"

"Well, hmm... You can have him on one condition."

"And what's that, Lord?"

"He'll be proud, arrogant, and self-admiring. So you will have to let him believe I made him first. That will have to be our little secret... woman to woman."

Pagan Music - Top Ten
Written by StrawberryDaifuku

This month, as a celebration of the Pagan New Year, there’ll be a “top ten” list of the “best” Pagan-based songs I’ve featured within the past year. Since the music section was only up for two months, I’ll post some music I haven’t talked about. You might see them again next year. Who knows?

10. Elemental, by Hecate’s Wheel. This song, about the elements, is very inspiring. There are no instruments in this one, but that doesn’t take away from the beauty of the piece.

9. Wytches Chant, by Inkubus Sukkubus. This song, to me, is one of the most powerful Goddess chants I’ve heard. Though simple [it’s only the repetition of the names of six goddesses] it’s beautiful, and can be applied to many things, from ritual to meditation.

8. China Roses, by Enya. For a long time, this was my favorite song. It’s beautiful, and has wonderfully interpretative lyrics. It’s very calm, and great for meditation

7. Heartbeat of the Earth, by Inkubus Sukkubus. This song almost completely encompasses all feelings of love one can have for the earth. The drum beats and upbeat tempo only do more to add to the power of this song.

6. Inanna Blue, by Hecate’s Wheel. This song is somewhat cryptic, and almost haunting. The vocalists are very articulate, and you feel immersed in the song’s setting.

5. Flora’s Secret, by Enya

4. Ctrl Z, by Drop Black Sky. I’m not sure what makes this song “Pagan,” other than the fact that the artist and vocalist is the leader of a coven. Regardless, this is a beautifully haunting song about undoing one’s mistakes in life.

3. Lauren and I, by Celtic Thunder. Though a love song, it’s beautiful. It’s perfect for this season, as it starts out by describing the changes of fall.

2. Away with the Faeries, by Inkubus Sukubus. A fast tempo and wonderful instruments and lyrics are what makes this piece great. Even better, it’s about one of my favorite subjects, faeries!

Aaaaand... Number ONE! Rani, by FAUN. This song is just… epic. All of these string instruments smooshed into one piece makes for a great composition.

Sabbats - Samhain
Written by Autumnwind Esquire

Hello and welcome! It’s good to see you once more.

Come sit near the hearth with me and I’ll tell you a little of Samhain…
It is late Autumn now, maybe there has even been a taste of snow in your area. The air is crisp and cool, most trees have let their leaves go and you can clearly see their branches, reaching their bone-like silhouettes up to the sky. The veil is thin this time of year and we find our thoughts turning to our Ancestors and Beloved Dead. It is a time to recall our own cycles of life, death, and rebirth. This is Samhain or commonly called Halloween.

It is the time of the year when it seems that the Earth herself seems to be dying. All around us final preparations for the long dark winter are evident. This is the time where we mourn the death of the God, for the fields and gardens are barren and resting awaiting the far off spring. We may want to read stories of the Crone goddesses a particularly apparent one being the Baba-Yaga, to get us thinking about our own turns through the Cauldron of the Goddess.

During the days leading up to Samhain or the day of, we may want to spend some time making a collage* from pictures of those gone to Summerland before us, or we may choose to simply gather some pictures or small tokens of those we miss to place on our altars. Our Samhain celebration can be a Dumb Feast where we set a place for the spirits to eat with us in silence. We could focus on divination and partnering with the spirits to see what our next turn of the year wheel holds in store. We may choose to combine a secular and religious celebration by having a light meal made from harvested winter vegetables, and grains**. Setting a place for our ancestors at the table. Holding a quick circle with simple divinations, and then costumes and trick-or-treating for the little ones.

How ever we choose to celebrate Samhain honoring our Ancestors and Beloved dead is what Samhain is all bout.
When we next visit I’ll tell you of Yule…

*Beloved Dead Collage
This craft can be as simple or complex as you wish.
Feel free to do what ever you feel is appropriate for you.
Supplies: Pictures of your loved ones (don’t forget any beloved pets), poster board, archival safe glue, various scrapbook supplies.

Poster Board Collage:
Collect pictures of your loved ones that you can permanently use for this project. Lay them out on a poster board and glue them on to the poster board with an archival safe glue. Decorate in what ever manner and with what ever embellishments you choose.

Scrapbook Collage:
After collecting pictures of your loved ones along with any small tokens, or stories that remind you of them, create a scrapbook page for each of your loved ones.

Framed Picture Collage:
Collect framed pictures of your loved ones and set them in a pleasing display on your altar or shrine. This is good if you are not able to make a permanent collage.

**Butternut and Ham Bisque with Cranberry Soda Bread
(Ham is a ritually appropriate meat to serve at Samhain, as sows are sacred to Cerridwen, however if you prefer not to make the soup with ham you could substitute a smoked tofu, or simply leave it out the soup is wonderful with or without the ham.)

Bisque Ingredients:
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 very large sweet onion, chopped
1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary leaves, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
5 cups butternut squash, peeled and diced
1 cup all-purpose potatoes, peeled and diced
5 cups chicken or vegetable stock
1 teaspoon salt
Ground black pepper, to taste
1/2 cup light or heavy cream
1 1/2 cups diced cooked ham

Melt the butter in a medium soup pot or large sauce pan. Stir in the onion and rosemary. Partially cover the pan and cook the onion over moderate heat for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir in the garlic and cook for another minute.

Add the squash, potatoes, stock, and salt and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and cover the pot. Cook the soup at a low boil for 20 minutes or until the vegetables are very soft. Remove the pan from the heat.
Using a slotted spoon, transfer the soup solids and a ladleful of broth to a food processor (do this in batches if your processor is small). Puree the vegetables, then stir them back into the broth. Stir in the pepper, the cream, and the ham, heating for several minutes before serving. Makes 6 servings.

Soda Bread Ingredients:
1/2 cup old-fashioned oats
1 3/4 cups buttermilk
1/3 cup honey
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
3 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup whole wheat flour
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup dried sweetened cranberries

In order for the bread to achieve the right texture, you should cool it before serving, start the bread 2-3 hours before the soup.

Heat the oven to 400°. Lightly oil a large baking sheet and dust it with cornmeal. Measure the oats into a bowl, then stir in the buttermilk, honey and oil, In a large bowl, combine the remaining ingredients and make a well in the middle. Pour the liquid into it and briskly stir with a wooden spoon until the dough becomes a shaggy mass.

Let the dough sit for 3 minutes. Turn onto a floured surface and gently knead the dough for about 30 seconds. Next, divide it in half and form each half into a football shape with rounded ends. Place the loaves on the baking sheet, leaving plenty of room between them, and cut a shallow slit down the center of each loaf.

Bake the bread for20 minutes, then reduce the heat to 375° and bake 25 minutes or more until the loaves are golden and crusty and the bottoms sound hollow when tapped. Makes two loaves.

(If by chance there is any bread left over it makes a wonderful French toast for breakfast.)

Spells - Samhain and Beltane
Written by too2sweet

SAMHAIN

In Wicca and other neo-pagan paths, death is but another step on the circle of life. It is simply a time of transition, between the life we have completed and the new one we will start when we are reincarnated. During this transition time, we spend our days in the Summerland, and it is at Samhain, that the veil between our world and the Summerland is thinnest. Therefore, Samhain is one of the best times for communicating with those who have already passed over into the Summerlands.

FEAST OF REMEMBERANCE

ITEMS NEEDED:

* black candle
* pentacle (can be hand-drawn on paper if necessary)
* food and drink for sharing at the feast
* plate (to put the food on)
* photos and mementos of loved ones (family, friends, or pets) who have passed on
* (optional) Incense, Autumnal Blend using any combination of the following, or simply use one alone: Mint, Nutmeg, Sage, Apple, and Heliotrope

HOW TO:

Cast your circle, depending on path/tradition - call the guardians, and evoke (or invoke) the Goddess and God
.
say
Lord and Lady (if you have specific deities that you work with, feel free to use their names instead), I ask your blessings. Lift the Veil for me so that I may greet my Loved Ones who have passed on, Friends, family and pets who have gone ahead into your realms. Let only those who wish me well enter this Circle.

Hold the food and drink in your hands as if it were an offering.

say
This is the night of the Feast of the Dead, the night of the wheel-turning year that brings us to the Thin Veil. The gates between the worlds stand open this night. I honor my Loved Ones whose voices come to me on the whispering wind. The Veil is lifted this night so that all may once more rejoice together in fellowship. All those who wish me well, welcome to my Circle. As we eat, may we remember the eternal presence of the Gods, and may we remember that what we call death is but a fleeting existence in the cycle of birth, death and rebirth.

Place the plate on the Pentacle and light the black candle.

say
I ask all who have gathered here to join me in this feast. This is a time of remembrance of all those gone into the realm of the Dark Lord and Lady. Share with me now and know that I still love and honor you.

Eat a little of the food and drink some of the juice. Anything left after the ritual must be placed outside or buried.

Sit silently now for as long as you need to, and think of family, friends, and pets who have departed this Earth. Pick up and look at the photographs. Savor this time with them, listen for anything that they might have to tell you. When you are ready...

say
The Thin Veil has been lifted. My Loved Ones have come to the Feast of the Dead. I thank them for their presences and words of comfort.

When you are finished be sure to thank the Goddess and God, and the guardians (if you called them) for their presence/assistance in your spell workings. Don’t forget to banish your circle when you are done as well, making sure to ground out any excess energy back into the earth.

BELTANE

So, most of you who know me, know that I am pretty much against doing love spells. However Beltane is traditionally a time of fertility spells and love spells, and since obviously the fertility ones may (at least at this point in time) be highly inappropriate for many of you - I am offering up this short and sweet little spell. It does not focus on any person in particular, but is simply a means of attracting loving energies.

DRAWING LOVE INTO YOUR LIFE

ITEMS NEEDED:

* 3 in x 3 in square of aluminum foil. (metals have attractive properties, and work like a lightening rod which draws electricity from the atmosphere)
* a pinch of dried parsley
* a pinch of dried rosemary
* a pinch of dried thyme

HOW TO:

Cast your circle, depending on path/tradition - call the guardians, and evoke (or invoke) the Goddess and God

When you are ready…

Sprinkle each of the dried herbs onto the center of the foil. Carefully fold the foil to keep the herbs sealed inside. As you are folding up the foil say the following:

Quote:
I wrap up these herbs in 3 by 3
So the love I seek will come to me
No force of will, but what’s meant to be
Blessed Lord and Lady…hear my plea

Keep it against your heart to attract loving energies to yourself.

When you are finished be sure to thank the Goddess and God, and the guardians (if you called them) for their presence/assistance in your spell workings. Don’t forget to banish your circle when you are done as well, making sure to ground out any excess energy back into the earth.

Edit: There seems to be an error in the word bank. We've been able to find Lily, but not LilyMaia. So we're thinking that Maia was suppose to be the next word on the list. Try looking for Lily and Maia separately. If you can't find Maia anywhere, then don't worry about it. smile
