Did they get that info from The Sun? Because that my favorite paper to get news from, at least news that will never happen.
The Sun is the second evilest newspaper in Britain! Though it's the one that's had the worst effect on Doctor Who fandom.
They're to blame for post-2005 British fans using the word 'Whovian'. Nobody in this country used that horrible word back before then, but The Sun went on the internet (where they get all their stories) found American fans using the word, and started using it as if that was what we all called ourselves.
Then enthusiastic new fans, seeing the word in the paper and knowing no better, got it into their heads to that they were meant to call themselves 'Whovians'. So now we really do have the wretched word over here.
