Estelle couldn’t suppress it any more; it was obvious that this young little mare before her was taking everything so literally. She herself longed for the stories to be true yet something nipped at the back of her mind informing her that it may not be the case, just stories perhaps. Yet these ‘stories’ captivated her every night, like a mini show playing over and over again in her mind. A happiness of the heart that could not be stolen by anyone around her no matter how much they destroyed her spirit. She had always interpreted that the Moon and the Sun did share, after all the Sun didn’t have to give the Moon any light at all. She laughed; it was a gentle chuckle that was not threatening at all. And even though she longed for them to be true with all her soul she felt it was necessary to say the words "They are only stories" out loud for Alyssum to hear.
Grunting slightly she started walking again, there was a cliff nearby that lead to the most fantastic display of stars that she had ever witnessed. Although she couldn’t believe she was taking someone there it seemed like the right thing to do. Turning her head gently, her hair covering most of her eyes she smiled softly and began to speak once more. "Are you coming? I have something to show you. I promise you will like it."

They are only stories...
Alyssum wasn't initially sure how to react to this information, her face squinching in confusion. Just... stories? Then there was no Star Maker? No Fox? No pretty Sun mare, or tragic Moon stallion? Then... then what WERE the stars? Why DID the moon shine paler and change it's shape? She had been listening all this time, expecting to learn something new and... now she knew just as little as before! All the Star Lady knew was tales? Sure, they were pretty, and they were interesting... but they didn't TEACH her anything!
She could not keep the disappointment from shining in her eyes or the hurt look from her face. She had trusted Estelle, had believed her without reservation... and now all she knew about the night was stories. When the other mare called for her to come, she initially hesitated... but Alyssum had never shied away from an adventure, and she didn't intend to do so now. "Okay... let's go."

Estelle noted the disappointment that shone so magnificently behind her eyes, she didn’t completely understand what she had done that had disappointed the happy little mare. A strange feeling twanged at her heartstrings, what was this feeling? Why did she feel so horrible? Sighing she attempted to suppress this thought also, it seemed that lately she was simply suppressing her feelings, maybe one day they would explode out of her if she continued in this manner, yet there was no alternative.
With each step she got closer to the cliffs face, unsure of what to say to cheer the mare up she wandered in silence, the moon shimmered high above and the intensity of star clusters started to increase, they where close. Excitement gripped her, and she picked up speed gently trotting towards the cliff side. Heart racing, wind blowing, stars twinkling, it was a perfect evening.
After a short time she reached the cliffs edge, the clusters of stars had increased in density before her, this is where she felt all the stars began, the families that led to the beginning of the universe. Stopping in her tracks she tried to take in their beauty, from here you could see gaseous swirls and clouds wrapping around the families in the sky. Feeling guilty for upsetting her temporary companion she smiled and turned her head to her. "I believe the stories..." She paused, "...afterall why did they get told in the first place if there was no truth behind their words."

Alyssum followed in silence, keeping her distance and not accelerating beyond her normal walk even when the other mare picked up speed. She wanted to see this new location, but disappointment lingered from the revelation that the stories she had heard tonight might not be true. And there was also the pressing weight of her eyelids, the way her tail drooped. She had stayed up too long, used up all of her energy in one burst of excitement, and now even staying awake was so hard...
When they reached the cliff, she lifted her head up to gaze at the menegarie of stars.she had to admit that it was an impressive sight. She tried to articulate such, her words muffled by a massive yawn, "S'pretty, Star Lady."

Estelle let her own excitement fade away as she looked at the smaller mare, she seemed upset about something still, looking at the stars that twinkled so brilliantly once more her heart sunk slightly, perhaps there where no others like her that found fascination in the stars? This notion was slightly depressing, perhaps she really was destined to travel alone, or maybe this place was a sign of where should end her travels?
Momentarily forgetting the other mares presences she scanned the area, there was a field with magnificent trees standing tall in the ground, she imagined that their roots wriggled deep into the ground. Her heart longed to find a place like that, a place that she could plant her roots and start her life again. Perhaps the stars here where the sign??
Coming back to the reality around her she heard Alyssum yawn and the realisation that she was a creature of the day was realised. She smiled softly towards her; she had tried to understand the stars, yet during the night she seemed a fragile creature. Almost in a motherly way Estelle spoke once more "Sleep Alyssum," she smiled over at her, her eyes capturing the twinkling light from the stars above, "The stars will be here again tomorrow."
Lowering her hind softly towards the ground she sat down and lowered her head, she could see the stars from her but felt that it may encourage Alyssum to sleep.

Normally, the brown mare would have protested that she could stay awake, would have asked more questions, demanded more answers. But the pressure from her tired eyes was too much, and she nodded when the yellow female before her sat down to better observe her stars. At least she had met Estelle... had learned something, if not much. It was a small kind of comfort to the adventerous Alyssum.
She turned around and prepared to trot the short distance back to her normal patch of forest, muffling another yawn in order to get out her parting words, "G'night, Estelle Star Lady. I'll see you around, and then I'll show you my favorite spot and tell you all I know about trees."
After that, she dug her hooves into the ground and took off, preparing for home and the soothing familiarity that would allow her to rest.

Estelle tilted her head, her brief encounter with Alyssum seemed to have gone fairly well, it gave her a glimpse of hope for the future, perhaps not everything would be a complete disaster for her from this point forward? She smiled, perhaps she should also sleep if she was to explore the wonders of the day, wonders that she had never truly opened her eyes up to before. As she closed her eyes softly to drift she watched as Alyssum disappeared into the distance.
Her dreams wandered to her life, things where not as grim as she predicted they would be earlier that day. Perhaps one day she could call someone 'friend' and even find love. Yet that felt as if it would be more difficult than anticipated. Only time would tell what fate had install for her, a fate she was almost looking forward to playing out.
